Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place was daylight robbery, $190 for the family room for a night. It is a hostel not a hotel and the place is filthy. We had no other option than to stay here as the roads were closed. We enquired within the hotel first if they had any rooms and we were told no. When we checked booking.com they had a room - shock! The showers are falling apart and the rooms are in desperate need of renovation. I would have been able to see past the imperfections if the room was a reasonable price.

I had a quiet Sunday night in a single en-suite room. Yes, the hotel is old and in need of refurbishment, but they are very clear on their website what the place is like, including the possibility of noise as they are over a bar. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, heater was provided. Only negative was the shower door in the en-suite - if you are plus size, you won’t be able to use the shower - the door opens inwards, towards the shower head, with little room to squeeze past the door. Wifi wasn’t great, but worked.

This hotel has definitely seen some better days. This is definitely better described as a hostel than a hotel. It is in a great location and is in walking distance of restaurants and shops. The rooms are basic but has everything you need. Unfortunately a previous guest had been smoking in my room and they tried to mask the smell with a cheap air freshener. The bed is very old and soft, and I woke up very sore. The wifi was slow but worked most of the time. Luckily, it was not as noisy as I was expecting on a Saturday night.

Outdated and wall paper coming of walls. Internet is barely working. Carpets are really worn. Pub underneath sending noise up till early hours. Curtains really thin in front of window letting in a lot of light. Kitchen very small.

This hotel is ready for a bulldozer for a new development. On a hot night a fan is available in the room which is on a one hour time clock , letting you sweat for the rest of the night. It is in a time warp, worst place to stay. You need earplugs on Saturday night as a nightclub opens till 3am playing head banging music.

The website mentioned that the accommodation was above bars, so I expected a little noise. This was not the case. I was there on a Thursday night, and all drinkers had dwindled away by 9pm. The room was clean and functional. I appreciated being able to cook my own meals in a shared kitchen, and also the guest lounge area which was very comfortable. This hotel is not modern, but it nicely combines back packer accommodation expectations and cleanliness. I would stay here again.

Fantastic location close to everything. The place was old but clean. Showers required exact precision for temperature control and were shared for some rooms. Not impressed that when I asked for recycling I got told to put it in the bin the recycling was to hard 😲 I had to ask for top sheets as we had none. She replied that that room doesn't get them. So I asked if they washed the blankets after each guest and she said no 🤢😵🤢 I then asked her again to get more sheets which she did.

The hotel is nice, clean and perfect for two nights but they need to work to improve the costumer service, special Nok, her administrator. The Wi-Fi service is poor, they don't have enough spaced at the carpark for the guests and they have problems with the fire alarm in the rooms. So is possible at midnight they wake up you because the fire alarm was active

Stayed overnight in a small single boxroom costing $40 for the night. Whilst the hotel is basic and a little run down in places, it is very clean offering decent value for money. The hot shower head was not working and was reported to the owner. Also, the light in hallway was left on overnight and is a little distracting. I was on a two day golfing holiday playing the courses nearby at Whakatane and Ohope so it was perfect for me. The location is great and you are near to everything. Try walking up the hill early morning, taking in the magnificent view to White Island, then enjoying a cooked breakfast at the Robert Harris cafe which opens its doors nice and early. The nearby Roquette restaurant has a stunning menu (try the fish) and the cinema do a decent hot chocolate.

Janet was very welcoming, I loved the old world feel. All amenities were clean. The attached restaurant had great food and service, Only downside was due to location it was a big noisy. The room with ensuite was great value for money, it was also nice to have a shared kitchen with complimentary tea/coffee. Close to everything I would come back.
