If your looking for somewhere just a little off the beaten track, but still within 5mins of great Country Cafes and shopping - Book a holiday with us and experience our award winning hospitality. Thornton Beach is situated between Whakatane and Matata in the BOP. We are closer than Ohope for many visitors and offer a New Zealand beach holiday with heaps of fun for the whole family. We have many campsites available and various types of accommodation to suit all needs and budgets. The views from our Holiday Park are spectacular. Whale Island is in front of you and New Zealand's only live marine volcano White Island can be seen in the distance. The ocean beach stretches out at the parks doorstep and the Rangitaiki River is also metres away. With panoramic sea views and known for its great catch, Thornton Beach is a fisherman's haven. Land based anglers can surfcast towards Whale Island, or you can launch the boat at the boat ramp which is only 200m from the park and head out to sea. Thornton Beach is lovely and quiet. But besides peace, tranquillity, safe swimming and great fishing, there are many more activities and attractions in the area of Thornton Beach Holiday Park.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spent 3 nights here during Auckland Anniversary weekend in our caravan along with our friends in their tents. Found out about the campsite through NZMCA. All sites are powered and have water supply shared between 2 sites, very handy. Sites were decent sizes typical for campgrounds. Good clean communal facilities with 2 tall fridges and 1 large chest freezer which were surprisingly not full considering that all the sites were occupied. $1 for 5 mins of hot shower, there are free outdoor cold showers option too if you prefer

Large covered area near communal barbecues with plenty of outdoor picnic tables. We didn’t use the bbq, not sure if you have to pay to use it. Phone receptions a bit hit and missed here. 2-3 mins walk to the beach but no sea views from the sites. We gathered lots of pipis from the beach at low tides. The waves can be a bit rough but there is safe estuary close by for the kids if you prefer. Close enough to Whakatane if you need to go and get supplies

We had been to Thornton 5 years ago and have wanted to return ever since! It is a great location. The ocean on one side and a river running into the sea from the other makes for excellent fishing and gives options for swimming.
The camping ground has all necessary amenities. The kitchen dining area has free BBQs and the showers run by token ($1) for 5 mins -great pressure and heat.
We will definitely be back and won't wait so long between visits.

After having completed the pack down of our tents and sun shelter for what is now the fourth year in a row at Thornton Beach Holiday Park, it is always with a heavy heart, but yet refreshed soul that we somewhat begrudgingly farewell both our great fellow camping family across from us, as well as our incredible hosts Glen and Louise with the promise to return around the same time again next year, and set out to head back home to the Hawke's Bay to resume the real life tasks of work and family life. If you are looking for a Family Holiday Park with great clean and modern facilities along with incredible surroundings that promise to keep everyone happy from the surf beach for swimming and fishing, or the river complete with Park, boat ramp and lagoon for safe swimming for the kids. I would not hesitate to recommend Thornton Beach Holiday Park, I know Glen and Louise would love to see you there, I know for sure I am already looking forward to heading back for our next Summer Holiday.

Look forward to seeing you again soon Glen and Louise. Much love and blessings, Paul and Shona S.

Myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in the tourist flat, facilities were nice and clean and the location and view takes your breath away. I e were also able to bring our quad bike into the grounds and there is an entry and exit point from within the grounds to the beach via quad and walking. We also got a gate key for a bond of 20) that was returned to me when we left and handed the key in. Great for families and friends too as we saw a play area and the beach is a stones throw away! Definitely coming back soon!

Our family loves camping at Thornton Beach holiday park. The lagoon is perfect for our pre-schooler and paddle boarding and my husband and 8 year old love boogie boarding at the beach! The park facilities are fresh and modern and the staff are so lovely. It is a bonus that the surf life guards are there at the end of the beach access during the summer period too. We always look forward to our next stay

Thornton Beach: Friendly staff at check in, peaceful surroundings. Our cabin was clean and the kitchen and bathrooms were spotless. Our only suggestions were we don’t think there is a need to have music blasting in the bathroom and common kitchen areas. Especially at night when you go toilet. The hot showers, when you buy your tokens and put them in, are hot and VERY powerful, I stood there just to get a back massage. The double size mattress in the standard cabin was too thin. Even though it rained the whole time we had a very relaxing time.

We've stayed here several times in both a tent and now a caravan. We love that the estuary is safe for the kids to swim, kayak and paddle board. Great ammenities and the staff are friendly too. We went with friends and then though we all booked separately they made sure we were all placed together.

Small family campground close to the beach and the river. Great facilities that were cleaned regularly and friendly staff. Lots of people catching fish by the river mouth and good facilities to cater for your fish cleaning and cooking. Also able to hire SUPs and kayaks.

We stayed in our caravan for 4 nights and simply just didnt want to leave. The facilities are excellent and the location is awesome. Good fishing off the Beach in front of the Park, safe swimming for the youngins in the very nearby estuary. Had loads of fun on the large bouncy pillow and the mini soccer field. Friendly accommodating staff. We will definitely return here.
