The camp sites are larger than most so even when full you do not feel crammed in by the ‘neighbours’. The owners were extremely helpful and attentive. The facilities are well maintained and spotless. The location is great and Glen and Lou make sure a family friendly environment is maintained. It all made for a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Will definitely return.
We stayed in our caravan for 3 nights and picked a site close to the facilities, which were clean and reasonably maintained. Owners were helpful and friendly, assisting to make it a pleasurable stay. Showers run by tokens and are limited to 5 mins but doesn't have any sort of warning when the water is due to stop. Its close to the beach & would go back again.
We stayed in the motel for two nights recently. We thought the accommodation was a bit grubby. The cushions were stained and there were lots of marks on the walls. Additionally the carpets were unclean and the sofas were tired looking. Beautiful spot but expensive for the standard of accommodation. Friendly staff and great book library.
After our first visit to Thornton Beach Holiday Park it very quickly became a new favourite. Facilities are great, very big sites, more than big enough to set up your caravan and park your car. Glen is an absolute star, constantly cruising the campsite on his bike making sure everyone is OK. Super friendly guy with lots of interesting stories to tell. Beautiful beach with awesome fishing, and the river also to swim / play in. Fulfilled a bucket list dream of catching a big kingfish not only once but twice! Glen being the fisherman he is was just as ecstatic with my catch as I was. He is more than happy to share the local fishing info with you. Was so nice to relax in the more than enough showers after a day on the water / beach. Great kitchen and communal area. Definitely will coming back next summer!…
Spent 3 nights here during Auckland Anniversary weekend in our caravan along with our friends in their tents. Found out about the campsite through NZMCA. All sites are powered and have water supply shared between 2 sites, very handy. Sites were decent sizes typical for campgrounds. Good clean communal facilities with 2 tall fridges and 1 large chest freezer which were surprisingly not full considering that all the sites were occupied. $1 for 5 mins of hot shower, there are free outdoor cold showers option too if you prefer Large covered area near communal barbecues with plenty of outdoor picnic tables. We didn’t use the bbq, not sure if you have to pay to use it. Phone receptions a bit hit and missed here. 2-3 mins walk to the beach but no sea views from the sites. We gathered lots of pipis from the beach at low tides. The waves can be a bit rough but there is safe estuary close by for the kids if you prefer. Close enough to Whakatane if you need to go and get supplies…
