Detailed Reviews
Was a compulsory stop as part of the Stray bus tour. Very expensive at $80 per person to "experience" the culture. Was met by the locals/residents in their jeans and t-shirts. Had to sleep in the marae meeting house - no other options - basically on the floor with sleeping bags but also get a floor mat and pillow. It was interesting seeing the meeting house but that's about it. Dinner and breakfast were included which were nice, although you were expected to help wash up afterwards. No towels provided and the shower rooms had limited privacy. The residents were very friendly but all in all, not worth it.

At Uncle Boy's you can choose to stay in dorm or family rooms, or stay in the Marae Meeting House in a traditional way and sleep on the floor (although you get the option of mattresses and pillows so it's not 100% traditional!). This is a very unique experience that you probably won't find anywhere else, and especially at this price.
Uncle Boy's is a new and purpose built. The kitchen is well set up to accommodate large groups, and you can even have the crew at Uncle Boy's feed you a Hangi, a traditional 'all you can eat' dinner.
Every evening at 7pm the Marae Cultural Group perform a cultural show including dance, songs and Haka.
Uncle Boy is a very involved and friendly, you will love staying with him, chatting to him and maybe even like the fact that he plays ABBA every morning.
The only negative we experienced was that the members of the Cultural Group on the night we saw the performance spent a lot of time messing around and being silly when we were genuinely there to listen and learn - we thought they were pretty unprofessional but they were teens after all, so what more can you expect?
