Detailed Reviews
Mahamudra Centre is a truly beautiful and peaceful retreat centre, with wonderful Mahayana Buddist Teachings to attend, or just a lovely place to rest and meditate in, or retreat to. The accommodation is very clean either sharing with others or in your own studio/cabin with either your own facilities or using the shared ablution block. The shared bathroom block is clean and well kept. Meals are vegetarian and absolutely delicious. I would recommend planning to stay for a week or more. The Gompa or Meditation room is available for teachings or for quiet personal meditation. There is also a shop and a library in the main central building. There have been many additions since I last visited the centre. Date below is not correct as my stay was some time ago.The centre is located in the very beautiful Coromandel/Colville peninsular.

I took the ferry from downtown. I soon left behind the Auckland skyline and made my way to the centre from Coromandel township. Situated in the rolling hills of the Coromandel, the centre has made for some perfect weekend escapes from the busyness of Auckland. From the centre you can walk to the cafe in Colville or do some of the walks through the surrounding hills.
It is not the Hilton, but the accommodation is clean, comfortable, and recently updated. I stayed a few times in the single rooms by the meditation hall but mainly in the single cabins. The centre can provide hearty vegetarian meals and a schedule of weekend events. This time I just went to do my own meditation and enjoy the peaceful space at the centre.

We stayed in a cabin, read lots of books from the library, savoured the (oh so civilised) 9am meditation and slowed down. Beautiful place to stay, lovely people, comfortable accomodation, excellent walks at Stones Beach, and really good karma as a bonus.
