Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You will be lulled to sleep with waves lapping 5 meters away from your spacious motel room which is just perfect for one couple. I loved the simple no-fuss style and a step back to the 70's. Our room was beautifully clean, the bedroom and separate lounge simple and relaxing. We were greeted by the very friendly host Katherine who made us feel welcome, and I wish we could have stayed another night. Look at the website so you know what to expect. We did and its great value. We will come back. The gorgeous sunset while sipping my wine and looking at the water was stunning.

And location is about the highlight. Katherine and John extremely friendly and helpful and being right next to the water was marvellous. Unfortunately, all those previous posts tricked us into thinking it actually was clean and quite unique. The term "Retro" has been used often, however, I think the more appropriate term should be "old", "aged" or "outdated". Maybe we just struck the wrong room, but ours was definitely not "spotless" and could better be described as quite dirty. The bed was comfortable and carpet looked quite new, however, everything else in bad need of replacing and/or scrubbing.

It was time for a quiet & peaceful break away following a stressful October/November and a refresh is what we got. If you are looking for glitz, glamour and nearby restaurants this is not the place for you, a peaceful & quiet waterfront experience is what you will get. It is located just 1.5 hours away from Auckland. The unit is spacious and well equipped. There are plenty of short walks and drives to be done. The towns of Thames & Coromandel have lots of interesting experiences to suit most needs.

Whenever we visit New Zealand we try to squeeze in a visit to the Seaspray Motel, 14 km north of Thames near the start of the beautiful Coromandel peninsula. The six-unit building is by no means modern, but this is offset by a fantastic location on a narrow strip of land extending along the seawall of Waiomu Bay. The water views from the units are breath-taking at any time, and further enhancement by sunset colours provides visions that are worth dying for. Adjacent parkland contains several large pohutakawa trees, one said to be a thousand years old, containing curious curtains of root-like downward extensions from their branches. We have visited the Motel several times, and find the rooms very comfortable and the included facilities satisfactory The friendliness and helpfulness of the owners John and Katherine Tizard (plus Boxer dog and cute Siamese and Burman cats) is outstanding. We look forward to further visits!.....Aussie John

We stayed two nights, over a long weekend, in the studio room. The room is clean and tidy, with a little table and chairs and couch. The bed was comfy and the room was vet quit considering you’re on a main road. There were tea/coffee facilities, as well as a fridge, microwave, and small oven.
The room has a small deck and is right on the water. Like, RIGHT on the water- about 5 or 7 metres or so. Just lovely! There are picnic tables and chairs on the deck, so you can relax outside next to the water. We went swimming- great water quality. It is about 15 minutes from Thames township.
There was a resident English Springer Spaniel who is just gorgeous! We would 100% stay again.

We had been driving for hours when we pulled up at this place, and what a delight it was - from its wonderfully retro decor, to the french doors leading out on to a little deck overlooking a couple of metres of grassed area between us and the sea. If only we had packed a fishing line! A separate bedroom, fully equipped kitchen, free wifi, thoughtful touches such as a beach umbrella, rocking chairs along with the most friendly & helpful hosts - what more could you want? Its not modern, but that is its charm, and the location... superb.

This was the best we got in nz! Beautiful waters edge studio (penguins at night!) and the owners John and kathrine were warm and personable, and everything about the room was quaint and homelike. Thoughtful silverware and dishes in the cupboard and a great shower! They have the life! Living there and running that motel, they've got a great thing going def staying here again!

Nice little unit with basic no-frills essentials and good price of $80 for double. Right on rocky shoreline on beautiful Thames Coast coastal road. Water a bit murky, but clears progressively as you travel north until exceptional clarity and fabulous (narrow, metalled) scenic road north of Colville to Port Jackson

Drive about 15 kilometres north from the bustling town of Thames and the road skirts close to the water all the way to Waiomu. Keep your speed down because if you blink at the wrong time you'll have missed the Seaspray! Packed into a narrow strip between the main road and the seashore it is aptly named. First impressions are not of the best - with a narrow entrance onto a limited parking area the motel buildings don't look up to much. But the welcoming proprietor and the pleasing surprise of lovely rooms overlooking the sea quickly dispel any initial misgivings. Rooms have a little balcony - on a nice night, sipping an aperitif, you will be cheek-by-jowl with your neighbour who will share, if the weather is clear, a sunset you will never forget! A good kitchen, small but comfy bedroom and separate living / kitchen room rounds it off.
Just up the road is access to a long woodland trail that climbs into impressive forests above the coastline. It's a fairly stiff trek but worth every breath. Rangers are just now building bridges over the many stream crossings and that will help improve access.
The road is close by and logging trucks travel night and day - but the bedrooms lie on the shore side and you'll hear nothing but an occasional rumble from the road.
Stock up with provisions in Thames and linger here awhile.
