The hotel's traditional Portuguese charm contributes to a unique atmosphere, although there are mentions of it feeling slightly dated. Guests consistently commend the staff's friendliness and professionalism, adding to the welcoming vibe. Great location, we had been here in June 2022 and had no complaints, however this year Sept 2024 the cleanliness of the rooms not so good, we were here for 10nights and only had our bed linen changed once, towels were changed twice and for the last four days of our stay towels werent changed, bins got emptied but that was it, the floors werent swept inside or in the balcony. The fridge was very dusty and hadnt been wiped down the balcony door was dirty with what looked like grease wasnt like it was in 2022 when it was swept and moped every day and towels especially were replenished more often, love the location and the staff are ok, but i think it may be a change in hotel next year. Its very quiet around the pool, no music and no pool attendant which is a bit of a concern, the towel being put on beds early in the morning by guest is a pain as there isnt many sunbeds, we saw people put their towels on beds and they headed out of hotel and didnt come back for some time, its not the best trying to get around the pull, we only managed once in the 10 days to get 2 sunbeds. There is a place called Intermarche on the strip in behind the shops on the strip, you need to look above the shops for the sign, its a supermarket so cheap and a very nice shop so much cheaper than the Spars, its like a Tesco but cheaper, sells all the foods you need plus toiletries just as ive said its like Tesco. Sells alcohol aswel which again is cheaper than the other shops. Love the location of the Luar as its near the cliff walks. Cleanliness is key for any stay and this year we were disappointed

Thank you for your thorough and very detailed review – including your shopping recommendations! We're glad you found Intermarché a great spot for those vacation essentials, and we might just ask them for a commission with all this free advertising! 😉 Now, about the hotel side of things – we truly apologize for your experience with the cleanliness standards this time around. That's definitely not what we aim for. We’ll be sweeping through (pun intended!) our housekeeping routines to make sure everything is spotless on your next visit. As for the sunbeds, we feel your pain. It’s like trying to win a game of "sunbed bingo!" We'll work on improving the experience around the pool area so it’s fair and enjoyable for all. We hope to welcome you back next year, and promise it’ll be better—cleaner rooms, easier sunbeds, and maybe even a pool attendant doing a little dance to liven things up! 🕺

The hotel is in a lovely spot and the gardens and pool are well kept, the reception staff were lovely and very helpful. I know we stayed at the end of the season but things were a little tired both in the public areas and in our bathroom. Our room had a view of the sea and the pool and a good large balcony and the room itself was large with good storage. It was clean on arrival but the maid turning up 10 mins after we returned to the room every day at times ranging from 2:20 to 5:00 became a joke. The bathroom was an adventure the shower head fell off every time the shower was turned off so you quickly learned to duck or catch, the bath was very slippy and there were a lot of broken tiles. Breakfast was adequate at best, it would help if they turned the warmer on to keep the 'hot' food hot.

Thank you for your detailed feedback! We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed our beautiful location, gardens, and the helpfulness of our reception team — they always aim to bring a bit of sunshine to each guest's stay. 🌞 We appreciate your patience with the “adventurous” bathroom; we like to keep things exciting, but perhaps a bit too much this time! We’ll definitely look into the shower head situation and the breakfast warmers to make sure everything is as enjoyable as those stunning sea views you mentioned. We’re grateful for your feedback and hope to welcome you back for a smoother, even more comfortable stay in the future!

The location is excellent, just across from the beach and a few hundred meters from the main town with all the restaurants, pubs and night life. The Hotel is really great - we found it to be very clean, and really comfortable, very quiet at night even though our room was adjacent to the main lift - we were not disturbed once in the 4 nights we stayed there. The pool is very well kept, clean and deep (it is well over 2 meters at the deep end); plenty of sunbeds as many go across the walkway to the beach. The reception wait was long to check in but very helpful when we did and with the minor issues we had they were resolved immediately. The pool bar was in our opinion a bit expensive and food wasn't to our liking, but was open until late and opened early from 9am with the pool. The breakfast had little choice, but was very busy and although people complained about it, many sat down and seemed to eat plenty with many also making provisions for the day to take out with them; the quality of what was provided was to a high standard.
Would highly recommend this hotel and staying there, and we hope to return again for a short stay in 2024.

The hotel from the outside actually looks very good and the outdoor facilities are quite reasonable, the swimming pool is fantastic and the bar offers some snacks and snacks options although they are not of very good quality but it is enough to have fun. The worst of all is the cleanliness of the hotel inside, especially the rooms, which is horrible!! Worst hotel I've ever been to in terms of cleanliness. The rooms didn't smell clean, they just had to make the beds, the balconies weren't clean and the bathrooms sometimes didn't even clean the floors. I even had empty and open soap wrappers in the bathtub and they were able to clean the bathtub and not even throw the wrappers in the trash. We used a glass to act as an ashtray that went without being emptied all week and they never took it away or came to put an ashtray on the balcony. The glasses in the room, which are two, were never changed or washed by any of the employees who were cleaning there.
We stayed on the first floor and sometimes we went up the stairs and there was a can and a bottle of beer hanging from a lamp for a whole week and no one removed them!!!
I don't think the 3 stars are justified at all. The hotel urgently needs renovation, especially in the rooms and bathroom!!! I haven't seen bathrooms like that in hotels for over 10 years
I think it would be much more valued with a small interior renovation that goes a little sideways when you see the hotel from the outside...

The hotel is ideally located - it is very close to the beach, shops and restaurants. The hotel itself has a small bar/restaurant which is perfect for lunch and snacks. Due to the close proximity of the beach we rarely used the pool but it was very clean and well maintained. Note that the depth of the pool drops to about 2.1M/7ft quite sharply. The hotel itself is very clean and has a lovely spacious reception area and a separate reading room which has a small library selection and really comfy seats. The hotel bedrooms are comfortable although a bit dated. All rooms are fitted with twin beds, i.e. no doubles/kind size beds. The room is fitted with a small fridge. There is also a safe in the room and you pay a small charge to use it (€1 per night rental fee plus €15 deposit).

We are so happy with our stay at Hotel Luar!

We wanted to find an affordable accommodation close to the beach when we decided to travel to Portugal and we really couldn't dot more right!
The hotel is literally a stone's throw from the beach!
A stone's throw away you will also find plenty of bars, restaurants, shops, etc.

+ The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful.
+/- Breakfast is limited but quite sufficient.
+/- The pool area at the hotel is good, the pool is slightly worn but is looked after every day and is perceived fresh.
The temperature in the water might have been slightly higher when it ”cooled” considerably when you decided to jump in.
+ The rooms (at least ours) are simple, experienced somewhat worn but are overall good.
The beds are nice, air conditioning was in the room and easily controlled by remote control.
+ The rooms (at least ours) are well soundproofed, much needed when the late nights out and nightlife were just around the corner.

- The hotel bar on the ground floor, next to the pool is unfortunately not very inviting and could use some love.
Here you get the feeling of an older school cafeteria, lighting in the room is way too bright / bright when the sun starts to go down (feels a bit like sitting in the waiting room in the health care).
The furniture is not much to cheer about, here there are simple tables and chairs lined up with not so charming lounge (?)groups that do not invite you to the feeling of hanging out in the hotel bar.
HOWEVER, this is not a major problem really as the hotel's great location means that you only need to take a few steps to get to the wide range of bars and restaurants!

We are very happy with our stay and we will be back, thank you for a great holiday!

The hotel is in a great location right at the end of the busy strip which is full of restaurants and shops. The beach has several places you can enter from the strip lots of steps though. Breakfast is basic (bacon, egg, ham and cheese, bread, few cereal and two fruit but for the price it's good. Hotel is clean out room was either cleaned or new towels and toilet rolls daily.
The pool is lovely only down side is some drains popping up with dangerous broken tiles and sharp edges also a few people did slip on the blue edge of the pool as was slightly slimy. Overall great location, friendly staff, beautiful views.

We stayed at the Hotel Luar for six nights in early May. Although the hotel is located on a busy road, it is excellently situated for the beautiful beaches of Praia da Rocha, and is in a quiet area away from the busy resort centre. The design of the hotel is somewhat strange as there are very few rooms with direct sea views despite the proximity of the hotel to the coastline. Nonetheless, our room on the front of the hotel overlooking the road was spacious and simply finished, and had a balcony to catch the morning sun. The hotel is a bit dated but is well maintained and clean throughout. The breakfast, as others have commented, is not the best, but is adequate to set you up for the day. There is a nice pool area with sun loungers and a snack bar. The back gate takes you directly to the broad walk - turn left and walk a couple of minutes to find a good selection of restaurants and a few minutes further on, you are in the resort centre. Alternatively, take the steps down to the beach or turn right and walk for about 10 minutes to reach Vau. I would recommend the Hotel Luar to anyone seeking simple good value accommodation in a good location.

Neil, Thank you kindly for your review and rating. We love how the sun reaches each one of our front facing rooms either in the morning time or afternoon. While I understand your comments about the orientation of the balconies, the hotel was built in the late 1800's where it was common to have lots of sharing spaces for people to spend time together. We have a few ideas to restructure these spaces over the coming years that I am sure everyone will love. The location is certainly one of the best in the area and I am delighted you were able to maximise your time around the hotel. Hopefully we will see you again soon!

Simple room with two single beds with terrace.
View from the terrace of other rooms in the front and side view to a strip of sea.
Terrace partly occupied by the hot water boiler and the air conditioning unit on the other side. This one with drainage on the terrace. Air conditioning works well and you have plenty of hot water.
Basic room and bathroom. Very outdated and cold to the touch.
Cleaning service comes every day.
Towels are changed less and less every day, some days not even at all. Soaps and shower soap sometimes not at all. You can inquire at the reception yourself.
A black hair on the bath was there when I entered the room and stayed there until I left the room. Everything was cleaned so well.
Breakfast remains the same throughout the period.
Scrambled eggs and fried bacon.
Furthermore, sandwiches with choice of cheese and ham.
Coffee machine with a Nescafé flavored coffee.
Not really pleasant.

We had a lovely stay here! Location of the hotel is perfect a stones throw from the beach and a 2 minute walk to the main strip with lots of mint places to eat. Staff at the hotel went above and beyond when needed and were always polite happy and keen to help. Facilities were okay especially when you consider the price and breakfast was more than enough to get the day going. I know the hotel has big plans in terms of an upgrade so all the best with that and who knows we might just have to pop back over again soon.
