Went with husband and 2 kids, age 11 and 7. The staff were always polite and friendly. The pool was very clean and although on the smaller side there was always plenty of room for everyone. The hotel and apartment were clean. The apartment is dated and the couch was falling apart but it was huge and the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was fully equipped, air con in living room and both bedrooms, hot water at all times. The cleaning service is every 7 days so if you're staying one week you won't see the beds/towels/bins changed, which was new for us. I guess you can think of it as a real self catering apartment! We had a sweeping brush and washing up liquid and sponge so managed the cleaning fine. You can pay for these services at any other time you wish. I got fresh towels half way through and it was €25 for a 2 bedroom apartment, €15 for a 1 bedroom apartment. There's public bins on the way to the strip so we just brought a small bag of rubbish each day and left it in those. There's no entertainment on site. It was nice and quiet as a result but kids did miss the mini disco. The restaurant on site is 100%. It's very unassuming but the food is delicious and staff are friendly. The walk to the strip is 10-15 minutes, it's hard in the 30-33c heat as it's hilly. We all struggled and dreaded the walk to be honest, my 7 year old really struggled. In lesser heat we would have been fine. Praia de rocha beach is fabulous but the area itself doesn't have a lot of families, it's a bit more young people, and its very purpose built so no beautiful Portuguese architecture or tiles! We went to alvor and Lagos for day trips and if I were returning I'd go to one of those instead. Would recommend day trip to ferragudo also. The Bengali cave boat trip was beautiful as well. The church in portmao is stunning. The Riviera area is also lovely, where the boat trip left from. And the marina is nice as well. There looked to be parking if you wanted to rent a car, we wish we had. Public transportation isn't great , we got taxis everywhere. Which is only an issue if you want to explore, if you want to beach or pool everyday then your fine!! Get the plaza real burger !!

We have just got back from our 7 night stay here, It's a lovely complex the apartment was huge for just the 2 of us and spotlessly clean. The only downside I'd say is the cleaners only clean once a week which to be fair you need clean towels more often but for this you have to pay. The Bar that's ran by Bruno and his lovely family is great and they serve some fabulous meals at reasonable prices I would highly recommend for couples and families as they cater for everyone and is not too far from everything

This is our fourth stay at Plaza Real. It's a really lovely, friendly place. The apartments are so big and well equipped kitchen wise. Cooker, hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster and a fold down table with 2 stools. Lounge has a large table and chairs, bed settee, sideboard, wall mirror and tv. Bedroom has plenty of wardrobe space, 2 single beds and a dressing table with mirror. Bathroom has shower over bath, sink, toilet and bidet. As we've been four times now we know exactly what we're getting and as we arrive it's like 'coming home' It's a self catering facility but has an excellent bar/restaurant run by Bruno, Matilde, Brun's wife, Alexis and Phillip. The food is amazing for a small'ish bar and our favourite is and will always be the 'Plaza Real beefburger' A must try for any meat eater. All the staff are really friendly and most speak English very well. Breakfast can be purchased on a booking system either, a full cooked or continental to suit. The pool is quite big with a separate kiddies pool with loungers and umbrellas. The main strip/beach is a 15 minute walk away or a few minutes in a taxi for about 5€. The beach is accessed by a pathway as it's quite a bit lower than the main road. Just enjoy yourselves because as sure as eggs is eggs we will be going back for a 5th visit ;) Obrigard!

Unfortunately even though the hotel is great apartments have everything you need one thing they failed to mention is that if you opt for 'apartment with no cleaning ' you don't get any change of towels , this means the enormous WHITE towels they do provide you with at the start you will have to wash in the sink and attempt to get dried somehow. No change of bed linen either so you'll need t wash them too .
I think I paid enough to have my ties and bed linen changed at least one a week like everyone else . The hotel should have e mailed me ahead if my stay to clarify I would not get any changes if towels and bed linen as I would have bought my own much lighter dark towels and my duvet cover . If they are not going t provide any towels or sheets other than the first ones try need to plumb in a washing machine which I would happily use to wash sheets and towels they are too big and impossible to wash by hand and get clean and wring out enough to hang out .
I paid the same price at pateo village last year and they came in and changed my towels and bedding every other day whether I needed it or not !
It gone from one extreme to not at all . Now I'll have to go buy some towels because theirs are impossible to wash without them going mouldy .
I have contacted my travel agent to ask them to clarify why I haven't been allocated a change of towels as reception told me it was because of my travel agent I did not receive a change of towels I don't really see that it their job to over see this and it clearly states on my voucher as change of towels and bed linen but no cleansing services which is classed as sweeping and mopping floors and that the only service i have not paid for .
If you lots for no cleaning services they won't place weekly supply of toilet roll you have to g onto reception to ask for it . Very embarrassing I think ...
it's a home I've had to write this review I don't like writing and reviews but I wanted to warm you guys ahead of your stay what you won't get so bring your own easily washable towels and duvet covers yy can get n the sink that are easy t dry or better still find a hotel that either is clear on this issue or find a hotel that does provide clean towels each week .

Pros: Better than expected. Comfortable beds, clean and spacious apartment with a great size balcony. Very good location to the main beaches. Mostly friendly and helpful staff. Good kitchen appliances. Cons: The kitchen had no washing up liquid, sponges, or tea towels. We were left with over flowing, stinking bins, and a kitchen full of used and dirty kitchen ware. I really don't know why basic cleaning equipment couldn't be provided. That is the point of staying in an apartment. Housekeeping is an extra charge, which seems to include bin changing. Toilet roll is given as needed. It can be awkward when you forget to ask for more and you leave yourself stuck! The air con in the sitting room does not work, but works very well in the bedroom.

We loved these self catering apartments and thought that they were perfect for our family holiday. The duplex apartment was spacious, clean and comfortable with a large bathroom, 2 balconies, a downstairs WC, lounge with sofa and a table and chairs and an adequately equipped kitchen. There was also a large closet to store suitcases and ample wardrobe space for us( a family of 5 with teenage girls!). We loved the pool area which was clean with parasols and sun beds and the bar served reasonably priced food and drinks that were good quality. It was approximately a 10-15 minute walk to the bars and restaurants and a 10 minute walk(max) to beautiful beaches. There are multiple supermarkets within a 5 min drive ( Aldi, Lidl. Intermarche). The staff here are all lovely and very accommodating. We loved these apartments and would love to return again. Thank you for a wonderful holiday 😊

Bit of a mixed bag overall. Unsure whether it's because I've been spoilt over the years with self catering hotels but this wasn't the best I've been to. Upon arrival we discovered we had to pay 200 euros as a security deposit until we left. This wasn't specified upon booking and so had to take money out of ATMs incurring big charges and one ATM that didn't give the money out but charged it! That's another story, anyway... the apartment was huge and clean so that was a bonus but very basic. One toilet roll, no things you may need such as corkscrew/ scissors/ sieves/ spatulas/ sponge/ dustpan and brush etc. Beds were really not comfy and everything was a charge. Hairdryer, iron, WiFi etc. No cleaning throughout the week that was a 30euro charge per clean and fresh towels but no facilities to clean anything if you didn't want that mops, washer etc. Again I'm not sure what is 'normal' for a self catering now but this was just so basic in my experience. The reason I've rated it a 4/5 is down to the bar and pool area. So relaxed and lots of seats. Although I couldn't eat there (vegan) the drinks were great and extremely cheap! The landlord Marco and his team were fabulous! Great energy, funny and helpful. The Silent disco was great! So glad we got back for the last hour and a half of it so much fun. They really made it for us. The hotel and the grounds itself were clean and looked nice and the hotel staff were polite. Glad we had the bar to enjoy :)

Not the best experience if I’m honest . The apartments aren’t very busy so you’d expect a high level of cleanliness. We spent quite a bit of money on cleaning supplies to try and make it a bit easier to stay in. The sofa was the most disgusting piece of furniture ever , it was tatty dirty and felt apart every time we sat on it . The ugly dirty blankets on the beds also need binning. It was cold at night so we had to use them as you only get 2 sheets on the bed . The curtains were stained and thin to the point of us needing to leave the exterior shutters down to sleep. We ended up paying for 2 nights in a hotel , one in Alvor and one in faro . The whole area around the apartments is scruffy and the walk over wasteland to get to Praia da rocha and be mithered to buy drugs once there isn’t good. We didn’t feel safe at night and stayed in our apartment once it hit 5pm. The poo splattered bidet just added to the whole ambience. All in all a really grim holiday . Lovely lady on reception was the only saving grace for this place. It doesn’t cost a lot to keep somewhere clean . Not forgetting the rusty bath and mouldy bath mat .

We had a fabulous week in these apartments. The rooms are spacious and were very clean. There is no maid service included but you can pay extra for that if you wish ( we didn’t bother). The location was perfect for us. It was a 10 minute walk to the main strip of shops, restaurants, beach etc. It is down hill so be prepared for the slight incline on the way home especially if you have lots of shopping! But it’s not too steep. Our apartment over looked a football training facility which our 7yr old loved but if not into football you may want a room on the other side. The staff were very friendly and the food in the bar was fabulous. The only reason I rated it 4/5 was because the pool needs a bit of TLC and there were tiles missing from the bottom which could be sharpe but we did go out of season so this maybe something that will be fixed before the holiday season starts.

Stayed in Plaza real Atlantic Hotel in Portimão 25-29th of October 2024, this was a last minute planned holiday with Work closed for Bank Holiday October.
The apartment was lovely inside, cooking facility was perfect, an oven and hob. Have seen nicer views though, the hotel needs refurbishment from outside, and found the beach front would have been a nicer place to stay. The first morning I woke, an individual was spitting phlegm over their balcony.
I required about clean towels, and was informed a payment was required for towels, no fresh towels given. No bath stopper, had to use the one in the kitchen sink basin. The chairs on the balcony are unsafe, my partner sat on a chair and while sitting on the chair (all four legs of the chair on the ground) the back of it snapped, we informed the receptionist and he immediately wrote it into the repair and maintance book without asking was my partner 'okay'.
I would stay on the beach front in Portimão if I was to go again, but if you want a quiet weekend it is lovely, not for a weeks stay though.
