Our lodge is a very unique place. Originally built and designed to accommodate the dam builders the historic lodge is a large facility with various room configurationsand remain largely unchanged. Whilst dated it has plenty of character and most groups love the facility - perfect for clubs, schools or weekend events. All toilet and bathroom ammenities are shared with a large communal kitchen, dining area and lounge. The lounge features a large open fire, pool table and television - perfect for a winter getaway with friends or a club. The kitchen is equipped for large groups or we can cater for you. The Holiday Park has well manicured lawns with powered sites and an area for tents and non powered vans. The region has lots to offer and we are central to many lakes, rivers and attractions.

Our first view of the Otematata Holiday Park had us wondering what we'd come to. Old ramshackle buildings in need of a good paint & repairs. We stayed in the camping ground & the ablution block had cracked basins & very basic although good hot showers. The kitchen had no oven although did have a microwave & 2 fridge freezers. The only reason I'm giving this a 3 & not a 1 or 2 was that everything was kept lovely & clean. The price paid was up there with modern up to date camping grounds so I thought this camp was very overpriced for what it was.

Inexpensive. Great kitchen, and showers! Quiet :-) Otematata is a very low key soputhern town that is quiet most of the time and only kind of busy the rest. its a great place to stay and unwind, do some day walks , bikes on the lake etc.

Affordable family camping - close to shops, hotel and lakes.
Ideal base for those wanting to enjoy water sports & fishing. Ample parking nearby for boats etc. Not many showers but plenty of hot water ... just need to pick your time of day to use these if it's a holiday time like Easter.
Park and children's playground just across the road and great bike playground there too.
Takeaways available at the camp shop ....very good value.

We slept here during our Alp2Ocean trip. The lodge was old, creepy, the floor was sticky, the bathroom in miserable state, electric cables were hanging through the bathroom. We had to check in at the hotel.
My impression is that they are focussing on the hotel and the lodge will be gone in some time.

If you are looking for an true "old fashion" Kiwiana campground with a great atmosphere this is the place to stay. We stayed here for five day around Christmas and have only positive comments to make. This place is spotless and clean, great showers, small shop on site with the biggest ice creams. Very helpful and friendly managers. A short walk to beautiful Lake Aviemore( great for fishing, swimming and other water sports) playground and sports field across the road, a nice wetland walk by the lake and the unforgettable peninsula walk with breathtaking views. We will be back:-)

Response from Brent C, Owner at Otematata Holiday Park & Lodge
Responded 15 Jan 2015
Hi guys, Thanks for the great review. We are well aware that our park is not the flashiest park in the country but your description of "true Kiwiana" is something we are proud of and want to maintain even when we do improvements in the future. The relaxed family environment where things are basic but clean and tidy is something being lost in our country. We are proud to be able to provide true Kiwi camping experiences. I hope you visit again and see the changes in the future. Cheers Brent & Kirsty

We stayed for the second time this summer (having previously stayed two years ago) and WILL NOT be returning. The one kitchen, shower and toilet block was filthy! In the week that we stayed, it was only given an 'ok' clean once. There were a number of minor maintenance issues that weren't addressed such as soap dish broken off in shower, constantly running taps etc. Lawns were not mowed. Not once did we see management or staff walking around the grounds to ensure they were clean. I would not recommend for anyone to stay here. The price is above other camping grounds in the district which are much cleaner and well-presented.

We stayed there in mid January but never again. The camp was filthy & the showers & toilets only had a superficial clean once in the week we were there & that was only after our neighbours complained. Shower fittings were broken, cracked basins & open drains running they the back of the showers (no problem in themselves) but hair was lying in there for the week. And as for the kitchen!!!!!! This is not a budget camp so we were all very disappointed. I can now see why they have a no returns policy.

Never again. The woman running the place should find another occupation. Rude obnoxious and thoroughly unpleasant. My advice to all is find somewhere else. Was told not to go there. Should have listened.

Boarded up room doors, slippery showers, trickle of water out of the cold tap and told by the manageress the dead mouse in our room wasn't a big deal. She was right, As two of our friends had live mice going over their belongings as they were trying to sleep.

Picked up our order and only to find it missing fish and a hotdog when we arrived home and also burnt. I rang back and explained this and that I would like a new order, the girl's phone manner was terrible to say the least. When I arrived back at the shop she looked at me and said " I haven't even put yr order in yet!!!" No apology for the inconvenience etc etc. Ruffly 20 mins later my order was dumped on the counter. Back home for the 2nd time round we sat down to have our absolutely disgusting fish and chips, hotdogs and meat pattie. Obviously cooked in dirty old fat, the fish if you could call it fish was processed and full of fat. The attitude and rude look on the girls face desperately needs to be sorted, replacing her would be the way to go.
Never ever will I go there again. Utterly appalling.
