We had the most amazing experience at this backpackers lodge! Way nicer than the typical hostel setting with wonderful grounds, animals and people! Walking distance to the town and basically everything you’d need. Richard, the owner, and his wife were also fabulous. So nice and welcoming! We will be back one day but this stay was at the top of our visit!
Overall our stay and the facilities at Tekapo Backpackers were brilliant - clean, comfortable accomodation in a beautiful setting - however, we left with a bit of a negative feeling toward it mainly because of how we heard management speaking to staff. On all three of the mornings we spent at Tekapo Backpackers we heard management reprimand a young girl (who we assumed to be a backpacker hired by the hostel to clean the rooms and kitchen etc) in a way that was unnecessarily harsh and at times humiliating. For example, in front of a kitchen full of guests management declared "No! You haven't done the pots and pans right!". We found this unprofessional and left feeling very sorry for the girl in question. On other mornings she was constantly reminded of what she had done wrong…
Great location, close to town, walks/hikes, the lake and other attractions. The staff were super-friendly and helped us organise trips as well as gave guidance on some good walks. The kitchen and communal areas were well equipped and big enough to cope with the number of guests. Everywhere was very clean. The only downside for us is the walls were quite thin and we could hear our neighbours, plus we were next to the toilets & showers.
This hostel is brilliant. It's a beautiful farm style building in a peaceful and quiet location 10 minutes from Tekapo town centre. The dorm room was spacious and clean with no bunks, and your own beside table, light and power. It also has a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. The staff were super friendly and helpful with giving tips for stargazing.
We stayed here as we wanted a private room at a reasonable price. This hostel has everything you'd need and is in a really convinient location. What really won me over was all the animals! Such a lovely hostel and the sheep are so cool, we even got to feed them! It was probably the highlight of the trip to Tekapo for me. If you're an animal lover like me, you want to stay at this hostel! (but even if you're not, it's still a cool place and really close to town!)
