Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The rooms are fine but try not to get one for those with challenged mobility as there is no window onto yhe lake ... just a door. The bathroom takes up too much space. The corridor in the hotelvis very narrow and gives the impression that it's cramped. However, beds are good and there are the usual amenities incl. WiFi. Good place for a walk up Mt John (with cafe on top). Restaurant adjoining the hotel.

We had a standard room as only staying overnight, thank goodness. We were given an upstairs room and there is no lift so anyone with heavy luggage should be aware you'll be struggling up and down flights of external stairs. The room was small, old and dingy, with a musty smell, no chairs at all and not enough pillows. Most of the power points didn't work and the shower was cold. A hotel that can't offer even a shower for guests has no business charging that kind of money. Easily the worst place we've stayed at in NZ and we would never stay there again.

Can't fault the location but wish I had booked a room with a view of the lake as the roadside units have no view at all. The room was adequate for a one night stay but would not have suited us for longer. There were no plates or knives and, although we had our own sharp knife, a plate would have been handy as we like to have a snack with a drink before heading out to dinner. There was no outdoor furniture to make use of either. Also unfortunately no hairdryer which may have been in the description but I missed that.

We got an accidental booking here after our original hotel booking called and said our room was trashed by a water leak so they needed to book us in here. The room was great, in a great location and had everything we needed. Having to lug our bags up steps due to no lift was a pain but we managed. The staff were great.

So, picture this, myself and some friends on a journey of mystical enlightenment stumble across this hotel. As we entered, Chisato, the receptionist, clad in a cloak adorned with sparkling constellations, greets us with a mysterious smile. In an unexpected turn of events, Chisato, with a flick of her want (which doubles as a pen), offers you a parchment scroll containing riddles and puzzles instead of the traditional check-in process. She challenges you to solve them to reveal your room key- A magical experience in itself! Throughout our stay, Chisato doesn't just offer assistance; she orchestrates mystical encounters. She conjures a breakfast feast fit for wizards and leaves behind enchanted trinkets that, when assembled, reveal a map to secret portals in the town, promising extraordinary adventures. With each interaction, Chisato's mystical touch adds an otherworldly dimension to your stay, making the Godley Hotel more than a hotel-- It's an enchanting escapade into the unknown, all thanks to her whimsical gestures and otherworldly guidance.

The hotel was good, the receptionist was the absolute BEST I've ever encountered. Not only did Chisato give us a warm welcome, but she she also gave the best advice. This was a tester trip to plan my engagement, and she gave us all the insider local knowledge of where to take photos, when the lupins bloom, what days would have the best sunrise and sunset, and (humorously, when I asked her) where to run off to to cry in case my prospective fiancé declines the proposal. Her insight was key, I can only look forward to returning for our special day!

First stayed here 6 years ago, on our first visit to New Zealand. Then, it was awful - frayed and dangerous carpets & rugs, scorched furniture which had obviously been placed too close to furniture, neighbours who broke the glass patio doors having an argument? etc. It couldn't have got much worse so on planning our 2nd visit and reading it had been upgraded we had to return. It has improved and for the overnight price was ok. But the bed was too small and too soft, we dipped in the middle and neither of us is grossly overweight. The motel close to SH8 so overnight traffic could be heard as we were 'in the annexe'. Didn't sample the restaurant so can't comment.

Good location and nice views. We stayed in the hotel on 4th July with tour. Had chat with friends till 10:30pm to have shower. Both rooms no hot water. Waited another half an hour still no hot water at a cold winter night. So we had a quick cold shower, turned to have cold next morning. Very bad experiences.

Booked the superior room and was not disappointed. Room was modern and clean. Staffs at Godley Hotel were all really friendly as well. Location is great, near the lake and a short walking distance to all the F&B Establishments around. Some rooms' view may be blocked by a building infront so request an upstairs room.
