Very helpful and friendly owner, location right in the centre of main shopping area, and backing onto the lake.
We had a 4 person family room for $85, so very good value - room was spacious and beds had electric blankets, although 1 of them had a bit of a bare wire showing so chose not to use that one.
Kitchen & bathrooms were typical of a backpackers - no problems.

Only minor gripe would be that the metal framed bunks did squeak a little, and there was a bright light shining outside our room all night.
But overall - value, location, quality - very good.

Run77 cafe just next door was great !!

The location is the best you could ask for.
The private rooms in the "Hotel" area look nice from the outside so I understand all the great reviews.
The backpacker "dorm" area however is a house without windows. The kitchen is not extremely clean and poorly equipped (also no windows there).

However the beds were clean and totally ok. So it's overall it's ok but not more.

I’ve stayed in lots of backpacker accommodation so feel I have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

I was a little confused trying to find the place as it is part of the Motel and the backpacker sign is quite small. The backpacker accommodation is behind the ‘Greedy Cow.’

The price to stay here is pretty reasonable and it’s definitely handy to be really really close to the supermarket, cafes and shops. The standard of cleanliness was acceptable.

The hostel has most of the things you need but it definitely needs a refresh as a few things were broken or looked rather worn. Mostly the kitchen and showers.

The shower was very quick to heat up and refreshing. Unfortunately the two showers are in the same room as the toilets, which can mean waiting a while to use the toilet when someone is using the shower.

I was given fresh bedding which felt and looked very crisp and clean. The bunk bed had a comfortable mattress, but the bar at the end of the bed restricted me being able to comfortably lay down due to the short length for me. An average person would be fine.

There was enough room in the dorm and the door had a lock on it, although it was propped open when I arrived. I did arrive early though. I had plug sockets by the bed which was very useful but the Wi-Fi apparently is only good in the outside seating area.

The Wi-Fi was the only thing that really bothered me, the other things aren’t big deal. I needed to upload lots of photos and videos to my iCloud account to free up space on my phone, but the Wi-Fi is pretty much non existent. Everyone else also wasn’t happy about the Wi-Fi, so this needs improvement, especially in these modern times.

The lady at reception did kindly give me another Wi-Fi voucher so I could use more than 5GB (your initial quota), but it was more a problem of the Wi-Fi being incredibly slow rather than running out of data.

Despite the staff being helpful and friendly, I’m afraid to say that I do think there are better options available. I don’t think this place is keeping up as well as other backpacker accommodation for a similar price.

Words can't even discribe how what kind of rude and aggressive way we were treated, when we arrived there. The owners of the Motel (and this backpacker accomodation) didn't even greet us at all, when we entered the little office, but immediately started offending us, because we did park our rental car in the Motel car park, when it was obvious that we were no Motel guests, but only backpackers staying in one of the dorm rooms.
Well, no big deal to tell us that we should park our car elsewhere, but don't shout at me and don't speak to me like a 3 year old child! And you should really not make any comparisions to "Gestapo" or other Nazi-terms....

The room itself was okay; wifi could be better (not available in the room, but only outside the rooms); kitchen could be cleaner and more up-to-date.

We would never recommend anyone to stay there! Stay in the YHA or in another hostel, if you wand to be treated respectfully and not threatened!

We traveled New Zealand for 3 weeks and were amazed by many friendly and caring hosts.
Until this accomodation!!!
I am an adult, 32 of age and have seldomly expirienced such a rude behavior by someone who runs a hostel.
Shouldn't hosts enjoy having people around? Lake Tekapo Budget certainly don't.

The room was nice and basic. No window to open. Fresh linen and a towel. Shower and toilet is clean. Kitchen is basic, but clean. No wifi in the room!!!

However nice the room or the view from the carpark: nothing can make up, if you feel not welcome as a traveller, spoken to as child, told to be stupid...

It makes me wonder, why this people feel so angry about the world and others.
You have such a lovely location and so many friendly visitors, where is the reason for you to be so rude?

This is a well-kept hostel, very comfy. I enjoyed my stay until I went outside for a cigarette with two recently-acquainted travelers. We talked enthusiastically about politics. The owner stormed toward us, accusing us of being unforgivably loud and gesturing wildly, demanding we go straight to our beds without a word. We accommodatingly marched straight inside and took care to keep quiet; the owner had asserted that guests in another building were disturbed by our noise, so we made sure they heard nothing. Five minutes later, the owner charged into the kitchen and roared that we weren't in our beds, and threatened to call the cops straightaway. He left in a froth of misguided anger -- the police never showed up. This guy shouldn't be given the opportunity to needlessly harass other travelers. Take your business elsewhere.

We stayed in a dorm room for 6 people. It is really the best backpackers I have ever been to in NZ. It has everything and it is very clean and tidy. The kitchen is small, but there is enough lace for everybody and even two tables are outside in a backyard. There are enough showers and toilets and they even provide towels. I appreciate that these people provide high-quality accommodation with very reasonable price. I would like to ask everybody who will stay in this backpackers to respect the staff hard work to maintain this facility on a high level. Our good behavior is the best encouragement for them.

Clean, warm with heaters and electric blankets, in the middle of town and very cheap. There was even a sky window to see stars. My friends and I enjoyed our time! The kitchen, although communal, was large enough for everyone to use. The staff was very friendly too.

I read the bad reviews of the Lake Tekapo Budget Accommodation and that was not my experience. Overall I had a good stay and would stay again.

First, this is adjacent to the motel of the same name and you check in at the same place. It’s confusing to find it so look for the Greedy Cow on the inner road and it’s right behind there.

The hostel is nicely located near the lake, free parking and a grocery store. The dorm rooms are huge and even when full gives a lot of space. No locked storage area though.

Laundry available on site.

Kitchen is small and has sparse kitchen supplies but is fine. Not a lot of fridge space so reserve your spot early. No dry foods storage so that goes in the rooms.

Hostel is quiet after hours and there is next to no outdoor noise.

The only real complaint I had here is the WiFi. It’s terrible in the common areas and won’t work in the rooms. And you are allotted 2GB for up to 3 devices for 7 days. IMO not enough.

Staff was nice and easy to work with and the bathrooms were big and clean.

I would recommend this place in Tekapo.

Hi Ellen C Sorry but we do not have a motel unit available for the two nights requested. I have the 4th available but not the 5th. I do have the two days available in a budget or dorm room if that suits. I would recommend that you have a look at our web site to see if any of these options suit . Regards Nick
