The location- with stunning views directly across the lake- is the main attraction. It's walking distance to the Church of the Good Shepherd and to the centre of Tekapo.
Our unit "Godley" was rather dated, circa 1960s, but was clean, spacious and comfortable. It had a television. We were unable to get a 2 person studio unit so had to get the family unit (which sleeps 4) for $180 per night. The heating was by oil heaters in each room and a panel heater in the bedroom. The bed was very comfortable. There was a washing machine and a small washing line out the back. The kitchen included 2 hotplates, jug, toaster and microwave and was equipped at a basic level which made it a bit of a juggle to cook in. There were no tongs, kitchen scissors, grater, strainer, large saucepans or sharp knife as we had found in other kitchens. There were frying pans and small saucepans plus one microwave safe dish.
The wifi was extremely difficult to connect to ( up to a dozen attempts to do so) and very unstable so virtually useless for basic use.
We were told by phone when booking that we could not check in after 6 pm and that there was no provision such as a key box for late arrivals and we would be locked out. Since the key was in the back door of our unit when we checked in (well before 6 pm) I cannot see why this could not be offered if a later check in was required. The person who checked us in was very helpful so I do not know if it was the same person who was adamant that 6 pm was the deadline.

Excellent option to stay, the accommodations are great and the view of the lake is incredible. It's not luxurious but it's well structured and clean. It's close to the center, you can walk. Beautiful place to stay, very pleasant.
I recommend

Within walking distance to the shops, but you need a torch if its after dark.
The motel is basic and quite dated (see the "classic" hot water cylinder!)
We couldn't get a good nights sleep because the mattress was far past its best by date (saggy).

Was expecting a motel not a group of what looked like mobile homes. Yes it was reasonably comfortable and had a late view but the room we were in had very old cheap looking chairs & cabinets and I can't remember the last time I saw a pink bathroom sink. Being charged $5 to access the Internet only if or when he remembered to switch it on was the last straw.

We stayed at the Lakefront Cottage and the views were unbeatable!

The unit was spacious for my party of 4 and comes equipped with a full kitchen, laundry machine, and a huge dining table! The furnishings in the unit were very out of date but it was a comfortable stay so no complaints. One of the bedroom even opens up to the full majestic view of the mountains!

The cottage is located near the town (you can walk or chose to drive if you are lazy) and in the quieter part of Tekapo, we enjoyed the peacefulness and awesome views of the mountains and lake. The lake was just a small road (very little traffic) away from the cottage.

The only negative experience was finding out that we could only make the payment in cash when checking in. We were required to provide credit card details upon reservation and assumed that the total amount will be deducted from such, as with most motels. We would have appreciated if this was communicated to us prior to arrival so that we can plan better. Thankfully, we had enough cash to cover the cost.

This place looks old from the outside but you will find the room large and clean. It had a small kitchen with everything you would need for cooking, large bed, T.V, heating, the bath room was small but clean. Could sit out on the deck with lovely views of Lake Tekapo and mountains. Is walking distance to the Church Of Good Shepard and the Dog Statue. About a 10 minute walk to the village.

The studio room we had is facing the lake but there are couple of bigger rooms in front of us. The rate NZ$115 is a little bit high for the spacious but dated room. The bathroom also shows its age. There is no kitchen and the owner suggests there are lots of restaurants in town why bother to cook (there's also no big supermarket in town). Internet is NZ$4/day though wireless signal isn't so good and it's only on until 11pm.
We love the motel for its location right on the lake front but there are many other motels along this road.

This property consists of about half dozen individual chalets. All at ground level, with 2 or 3 steps to the door, and parking at the door. My chalet was a large room with bed and settee and corner kitchenette, and small bathroom. Everything was very clean and in good condition. I had a part lake view at the front and beautiful greenery at the back. This chalet is on the edge of town and very quiet and peaceful. It is in walking distance for the Church of the Good Shepherd and the dog statue. But you probably need to drive to the village centre which has a good selection of shops and restaurants , but many close early in the evening. The owners was very pleasant and helpful.

Six of us stayed in the Lakefront Cottage, a 3-bedroom house that is part of the motel. The house is spotless, spacious enough, well appointed and well heated. The beds are some of the most comfortable I had anywhere. Compared to other accommodation the house was good value, and the owner was very accommodating.

The church and the dog memorial are literally a minute away, and the views are spectacular as there is only the road between the house and the lakefront. However, there is hardly any noise from the road as most people visit the church from the other direction.

I had read the reviews and knew exactly what to expect so there were no surprises. Yes the motel is a little tired and in need of refurbishment, but the location is fantastic, with great views and the price is right. The room we had was big and clean enough. Nice to be able to just walk to the Tekapo landmark, church of the good shephard

Hi Sam With the late dark sky occurring in summer, it is recommended that after a tour of Earth & Sky, you have a day to recover, that is, take two nights to stay in Lake Tekapo. One is not enough, and driving to and from Queenstown in the same day is dangerous.Barry
