Accommodation in Lake Tekapo can be expensive. We thought the Lake Tekapo Cottages were good value for money. Location was great, short walk to the Good Shepherd church, Lake Tekapo and the township. Retro style (original) fit out inside the cottage. Plenty of nik nak things in the living area, it felt like someone lives there normally and they literally gave up their house for the night so we could sleep there. I don't know if all of the cottages are like this or how to distinguish the cottage we stayed in from any of the others, other than ours sat way at the back of the property. If you want reasonable price accommodation and its only for one or two nights, Lake Tekapo Cottages are good value.

Handy for Tekapo. The 'Cottage' was functional with en suite, hob, fridge, toaster etc and Stephen the owner? was very approachable. We only booked one night as we were passing through but probably wouldn't stay longer. The whole site is in serious need of investment when viewed against every other accommodation we've stayed at over the last two months touring NZ.

Owners had moved us from what we had booked ! So, had no full kitchen & no laundry. On arrival, told we were in the "Honeymoon Cottage"! Well, so outdated. Advert says modern furnishings, wrong. Had blown light in kitchenette, blinds not long enough to cover bathroom window, Need blockout curtains, not old thin ones. Smelly old wooden wardrobe with someones old slippers left inside. Dangerous broken exposed wiring on bedside lamp. Good luck trying to get a Warm Shower...its either Hot or Cold. This is over-priced accommodation. One plus was after speaking to owner & informing him of our unhappy situation, he refunded us $281.00 for one night of our 2 nite stay.

Back in February we booked and paid for 2 nights accommodation (Standard Suite, 2 Bedrooms, Non Smoking, Kitchen (The Eastwing)) with free cancellation at Lake Tekapo Cottages via a well known hotel booking site for a stay in November 2024.
Earlier this month we received a couple of messages from Lake Tekapo Cottages via the booking site app to say they were under new management and that the booking site were blocking our messages so they couldn’t contact us to arrange our arrival. They asked us to email them directly which I have done asking about the status of our booking - strangely they didn’t reply directly to my email but through the booking site app to say that our booking is unaffected by the change in management - however the room we booked is no longer advertised on their own website or other well known hotel booking sites.
I have emailed Lake Tekapo Cottages directly again to ask for clarification regarding our booking but again they have not replied to my email.
Various reviews in June and July 2024 on hotel booking sites say "... the new owners are in the middle of doing renos ...", "Bit of noise in morning from building works" and "... still under renovations. Will be even better when reno complete."
Might be time to cancel and book somewhere else.
Just wondering if anyone has stayed there or has a reservation there and might have some insight into what is currently happening at Lake Tekapo Cottages and why they are not answering emails. Thank you for your help.

The potting shed room is really tiny. As soon as I walked in, claustrophobia set in and immediately my partner and I realized the standard of this room wasn't what was advertised. It was so old and dirty. The room wasn't prepared when we arrived: the door lock was broken and there was dirt on the thin carpet that was hoovered up there and then with us watching the process. The furniture was tatty. A piece of shabby cloth was covering up a tiny and old two seater. I dreaded to think what was being covered underneath. The bathroom was really a cloak room if not for a 3'x3' shower cubicle added to it. The toilet was dirty that I could not make myself sit on it. There was a musty smell in the room. I'm unfortunately an asthma sufferer and can be very sensitive to smell and dust. The overall compound was messy. The garden was overgrown and untidy. Equipment was strewn here and there. It didn't project that the place was run professionally with regular maintenance and hygiene in mind. We quickly went away and luckily managed to find another place to stay with even a lake view. Overall, we lost roughly £200 for not staying the two nights in the potting shed but the condition was so bad that we couldn't make ourselves sleep there least of all wash and clean in a tiny and dirty cloakroom. (The other place we moved into was only NZ$10 more per night and is directly facing the lake. The room is installed with a new bathroom with a giant bathtub and underfloor heating. It also has a TV. What a big difference with such a small difference in price!)

This review is only for the cottage called "The Potting Shed". I hope the other cottages are a lot better. The Potting Shed should not be advertised as tourist accommodation. It is barely suitable for emergency accommodation. There was a double light on the wall and a bedside lamp on one side of the bed. Nothing on the other side and no power point either, so you couldn't move the lamp over. There is only room for 1 suitcase on a table, meaning you couldn't use the table for its intended purpose. The other suitcase had to go on the couch so you couldn't use that either. (No floor space for the suitcases). So the only place to sit was on the very small double bed. Bit awkward for breakfast. The only sink is in the tiny bathroom, and you couldn't get the electric kettle/jug under the tap to fill it. There were 4 kitchen appliances plugged into ONE power board: toaster, kettle, fridge and microwave. This cabin, if you can call it that, was very overpriced. Also, you couldn't park your car at the door but at the end of a long path.

The place in the photos looks like something...however, live and direct it is scary, 70 euros per night is directly a robbery. It's not that it is dirty, but it is run down and the facilities and cabin are not maintained. The man however is kind.

We stayed in the East Suite, which is located upstairs - with a nice big balcony with tables & chairs for taking your dinner.
Only thing is because it is located upstairs, we had to struggle with lugging 4 big heavy luggages & other bags up the stairs & down, when leaving.
It's quite an old cottage but well maintained. Comes with modern kitchen & toilet. Rooms & hall were fine as well.
Place generally is quite clean & modern. Best part is it comes with a big aircon in the hall ( none in rooms) which helps circulate ventilation to the rooms.
This helps tremendously as we had to close all the windows at night because of huge number of moths, flies & insects trying to get in at night.
It's the same problem in other similar places that we stayed in NZ - most don't have aircon & it was very stuffy & warm to sleep with all windows closed.
This place is just a minute drive out to the Good Shepherd Church & the beautiful Lake.

The cottages are off a quiet street and very close to the church/dog Statue and swingbridge to town. Each cottage is individual and has mountain views. We stayed in the Tui Studio cottage which had everything we needed. Quiet location, Nice Queen bed, ensuite bathroom with awesome shower pressure, Milk,tea/coffee provided. A/C and free wifi. Parking is directly out front. Owner very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this to anyone staying in Lake Tekapo.

We paid $240 a night for this place. There were 4 of us. We stayed at a cottage right at the back, furthest away from reception, called Rowan cottage. The place is very run down and in need of up keep. I will advise not to stay at this cottage during winter. They may have other cottages or units that are newer, just make sure you know which you are paying for, if possible. Otherwise, you could find better place to stay around the area for the same price. Great location, but the things is, Tekapo town is not big.
