We stayed in the two roomed apartment in April 2022. The owners have made a reasonable effort to make it look a little less like a motel, and it is nicely decorated. The beds and pillows are excellent. On arrival you get free breakfast makings and a whole litre of milk, good for our five nights stay. There was coffee and tea, (organic fair trade) and the eggs for the breakfast were free range. There was however nothing without caffeine. Our cottage was wheelchair accessible, and the bathroom/shower was arranged to be that way also with grab bars in the shower and by the toilet. There are no bedside tables but large cupboards either side the beds with shelves in one where you can put your clothes, and hangers in the other. There is also a small shelf above the bed where you can put your glasses and what have you. The glassware, dishes and flatware are adequate if not exciting, however there is a full glass topped cooktop, and a combination microwave conventional oven, which means you could cook a full meal there if you wanted to. We found barbecue tools in one of the drawers. There is a cupboard with ironing board hairdryer and so on also. The cottage was heated and cooled with a heat pump which seemed very efficient. There is a wash house with washing machine and dryer. The place is set in some quite nice grounds, there are barbecues, a billiards table and some books available. You can sit outside on the deck if it's sunny and drink your tea. It is surrounded by farms and orchards, which may be a little noisy at times but we never heard anything the whole time we were there, when apple picking was going on. Nighttime was absolutely quiet, not even a car on the road that we ever heard. Best five nights' sleep we've ever had in a hotel I think. One of the reasons we liked it was its centrality. No more than 15 minutes away from the major provincial towns in the Hawke's Bay. A couple of small niggles but no real deal breakers – although the owner lady doesn't seem to believe in masks, which might be a problem for some. The test of a good place is if you would stay there again, and I definitely would.

We stayed her for 2 nights. The cottage was very clean and the shower nice and modern. The bed was also comfotable. Breakfast items given were OK, even with eggs from their own chooks. We never got to meet the host Rachel as she had been called away before we arrived and had let us know this the day before. The disappointing part of our stay were missing items, like no tea or an extra toilet roll. After contacting her, we were told later to go to the empty Bluebird cottage to get those. The washing machine & dryer along with the iron & ironing board we were told (when we couldnt find them) were stored in a shed, 10mtrs away. Not a very clean one at that. We had to carry iron & huge old board into the cottage to use it. Even though Rachel arrived back the following day, she didnt have the courtesy to come to our cottage & welcome us to her B&B and make sure herguests were happy. To us, that is an important part of running a B&B as its a personal touch, and little things like that matter. We would not say there again.

Response from Rachel Wrigley, Owner at Clive Colonial Cottages
Responded 8 Mar 2022
Hi Kay, we are very upset to hear your stay with us was disappointing. We try very hard to make our guests stay as enjoyable as possible. It was unfortunate that we were called away suddenly (it was an emergency and completely out of our control) and I did let you know you could ring or text if you had any queries and I did respond to your texts immediately. The "shed" you mention is an old original laundry, sometimes if we have a lot of wind leaves and dust can get under the door and into the laundry. As we had left a few days before you arrived, I was unable to check this. Unfortunately our cleaner had genuinely forgotten to place an extra toilet roll in the bathroom cupboard and to top the tea up also, this rarely if ever occurs, and we do appreciate & acknowledge our cleaners work regardless, as obviously no one is perfect all of the time and similar scenarios will and do occur in any accommodation setting. We are a self catering accommodation, and do not advertise as a B&B (we do offer a 1st nights breakfast as complimentary ) and because of NZ's Covid red light setting, I thought it appropriate to keep our distance, as alot of guest prefer this. As you can see we have a very high rating of 5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor and a 9.6 out of 10 rating on Booking dot com , so I think the effort we put into our guest's stay show in these ratings.

Stayed two nights in the Fantail cottage and found it awesome. Was just what we needed relaxing and peaceful. Very friendly and helpful hostess. Would stay there again. Games room was great and had a game of petanque against my wife and she thrashed me. Once again thank you Rachel and Tony simply awesome.

When we stay in the region, Clive Colonial Cottages are always the first place we check for vacancies and we’re always sad when others have booked ahead of us. This was the third time we have stayed in one of the cottages in the last three years and we still love it for the same reasons many others have stated. Repeat guests - says it all really. Stayed 2 nights - a special weekend holiday. The Tui cottage was spacious, clean and very homely. Well equipped with everything one needed. So handy to trails and a short drive/cycle to cafes and shops. Really appreciated Rachel's welcome and advise. Highly recommend and will definitely stay again.

The cottage was spotless, well equipped with all the essentials. A real home away from home. Central location and yet absolute silence at night. Very reasonable price given the high quality of the cottage and its furnishings and equipment. Highly recommended !!

Private and peaceful. Wonderful obliging owners Rachel and Tony were great hosts for our group of 8. The bbq area was a secluded spot for pleasant evening drinks and meals. Rooms were immaculate and would recommend this spot as a stop over for anybody visiting Clive. They also have a few bikes for usage/hire, which came in handy for our group.

Stayed for four nights at the beautiful Fantail cottage during our golf trip to Hawkes Bay. We found the cottage to be very very tidy, clean, comfortable and peaceful. The hosts were exceptionally warm and friendly. We will definitely return to Clive Colonial Cottages in the future.

we spent a couple of days at Tui Cottage, everything was excellent, the decor and comfort, the peaceful courtyard around the cottage. the breakfast provisions were more than adequate including the freshly laid eggs. The situation of the cottage was so convenient for exploring the surrounding countryside and towns. Rachel and Tony very good hosts. thoroughly recommend Colonial Cottages, Clive.

Cottage excellent decor and amenities set in beautiful garden and fruit trees. Fresh farm eggs and freedom to pick figs pears apples added the homely touch. We chose to be close to Black barn for a concert. Another added surprise was the close walk to the beach and bikes on site for ride to nearby trail. Close to shops, restaurants etc yet so rural. Definitely will be returning.
