only stayed one night, bed was comfortable, the room was warm and the people were welcoming. Nice and relaxed, the night I was there the guests were all playing the instruments available in the lounge which was entertaining - I have no musical talent so just chatted to other guests and hosts while listening. I'd recommend Cromwell Backpackers as a great budget option, central to everything you need in Cromwell, easy to find and if staying longer plenty to keep you entertained.

No reply when I tried to call so went straight there. Very comfy, very clean, good value, the owner was very obliging. Slept very well. Would definitely stay again. Particularly love the quietness, but was lucky that including myself we were only three in a dorm for ten!

Thx for a great stay. Very friendly and welcoming, would recommend. Great location easy walking access to Cromwell town centre, and an easy car ride to Queenstown, Wanaka, Clyde. Cromwell is beautiful, plenty of walks, bike rides and lake access.

Old hospital turned into a Hostel. The ceilings are high, rooms are spacious and well furnished.
The bathrooms are new and brightly lite. The kitchen is equipped for a small number of guest.
This is a tidy little place to call home for a few days. Free coffee. Very limted free internet.
Located in the mall next to shops, restaurants and the I-Site.
The only downside is the hostess of this "backpackers." She is inflexible and not helpful. Checkout is exactly at 10 AM. When the clock strikes you better have vacated the premises as the signs posted illustrate. I had asked if I might leave my small carry on while I walked around town and waited for a friend to continue our drive up the west coast. I was told absolutely "no" I must in fact leave and was not permitted to wait anywhere but outside with my luggage.
As backpackers go this was the most unpleasant end to a stay I have ever had. As I sat outside she asked me to return a book I was reading. In dismay I replied " it's my own." Then she pointed out the public toilets I could use as she locked the front door to the Hostel. This was not at all the New Zealand hospitality I had grown use to.There was no warmth in this sterile environment.

Response from CromwellBackpacker, Owner at Cromwell Backpackers
Responded 12 Apr 2015
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. I have tried to respond to your various issues. If you have any thoughts on how we could have made your stay more pleasant, please contact me directly and we will see if we can work with any suggestions you may have. Old hospital turned into a Hostel. - Yes this was the old medical centre for Cromwell township built in 1985. The ceilings are high, rooms are spacious and well furnished. The bathrooms are new and brightly lite. The kitchen is equipped for a small number of guest. - We have no more than 10 people in the building at any one time. This is a tidy little place to call home for a few days. Free coffee. Very limted free internet. - 100mb voucher standard and you may have as many vouchers as you wish during your stay. Located in the mall next to shops, restaurants and the I-Site. The only downside is the hostess of this "backpackers." She is inflexible and not helpful. Checkout is exactly at 10 AM. When the clock strikes you better have vacated the premises as the signs posted illustrate. - As the signs do indicate, so all guests are fully aware, yes, we request you vacate the building by 10am if you are checking out, as our rooms are thoroughly cleaned before our next guests arrive. Hence we do not operate as a drop in centre. When you returned at 10.30 to pick up your bags, you then informed me you had to eat. I offered you an extended stay until 11am. I had asked if I might leave my small carry on while I walked around town and waited for a friend to continue our drive up the west coast. - We don’t have any spare storage areas and you informed me it was valuable items, to which i offered to keep your luggage in my vehicle until you knew what your plans were. I was told absolutely "no" I must in fact leave and was not permitted to wait anywhere but outside with my luggage. - In our sunny sit out area while you waited for a friend to call me to tell you what your plans were because you don’t have a phone. Although when I took his message and returned to tell you, you had already left. As backpackers go this was the most unpleasant end to a stay I have ever had. - This is unfortunate. As I sat outside she asked me to return a book I was reading.- We have exactly the same book for our backpackers to read while they are here and because I was leaving the premises I said (thinking it may be ours) you could leave it on the table outside where you were waiting, so you didn’t need to worry about returning it before you left. In dismay I replied " it's my own." Then she pointed out the public toilets I could use as she locked the front door to the Hostel. - The door self locks to keep guests items secure, and out of consideration i was pointing out that there were facilities very near by. This was not at all the New Zealand hospitality I had grown use to.There was no warmth in this sterile environment. “The owner/manager does not live on the property. - I am generally around about 7 hours each day, 7 days a week, but if i am not here, then yes, phone or text and i will generally be there in 5 minutes. If you need a room you must call or book a head. Don't just show up or you will be greeted by a locked door. - It was unfortunate that you didn’t arrive at your estimated time of arrival as i would have been there to welcome you. I waited at the backpackers for you for about 45 minutes and then i had to go. I am only 5 minutes away whenever needed. There is free WiFi around the front of the mall. No place to store even a day bag once you check out.” - Storage is an issue in Cromwell and we have arranged with a shop in the mall to securely store luggage during office opening hours for a small fee. Unfortunately though not available outside of office hours. Kind regards, Sue

Here’s my personal experience:

I went to the backpacker and it’s the worst ever. Reason: I booked for female dorm but was given mixed dorm. The entire place was Extremely dirty and messy. Bed was in a mess and the staff said he will make the bed for me (I arrived at 4pm). The people who stayed in this hostel are weird. They gave me a stare when I stepped in and when I looked back, they smile at me (this gives me goosebumps).
The staff who works there was drinking alcohol while working (I have never see this before at other sites).

I then decided not to stay and did a last minute booking else where via booking.com at a much higher cost.

I asked the staff nicely if I can cancel the accommodation without charges (I’m aware that cancellation is not allowed). He called the boss (owner) and boss has verbally agreed to his staff that I won’t be charged and requested me to cancel the accommodation via booking.com.

well, upon my returned home, I learnt that I was charged. I reached out to booking.com and also the hostel via email. Hostel (ignored my email) and booking.com mentioned that they can’t reached the owner a couple of times and they did not even follow up since.

End result: I was charged. No refund. Without any stay and lesson was learnt. The reviews here, I seriously have doubt. I echo the last reviewer.

Granted, it's the only backpackers in Cromwell I think so if you are definitely going there then this is your lot, but I didn't really enjoy my stay.

Pros:

- The bed and linen were super comfy, I slept like a baby

- Shower was pretty good as well, I thought it was a bit weird we were asked to wipe them down after but I don't mind too much

- Free wifi, works pretty well

- Great location in the heart of everything, including being close to a tremendous bar

Cons:

- The kitchen was extremely cluttered and didn't seem very clean. It seems a lot of the guests, at least over the winter period, are long-termers who have gotten used to being able to leave there stuff everywhere (I have been guilty of the same crime when I get used to a hostel), but it was really unpleasant given I was only staying overnight. Even in the morning, the kitchen was a tip

- Lack of cleanliness all-round. The bed had hairs and dirt on it, hallway was cluttered with shoes, honestly there's just stuff everywhere so it feels like you're staying in a poorly kept flat instead of a hostel

- This was kinda the big deal for me. When I arrived there was no-one to meet me; no staff, no owner, nothing. I'd booked in advance, mind. A guest let me in and told me it was fine to put my stuff in my room as the owner was in Queenstown and would be back in 3 hours or so. I mean...dafaq? Bear in mind I was on the phone to this chap earlier that day. It's just a really weird way to run a business and I didn't appreciate it as a guest, it made me feel uncomfortable. I'm not sure if that was the norm, or an exceptional circumstance, but given the signage on the door it seems I was expected to check myself in.

Sad to say as the owner was really friendly and attentive but I wouldn't stay here again. Probably ideal for long-termers though

I booked here as at my time in the south it was the school holidays, so everything was booked elsewhere. The hostel was great, the rooms were fine, the wifi was reliable. The kitchen clean, the manager Darren was very helpful about hikes and walks to do around cromwell. Overall i cannot speak for the last reviewer they had a bad experience, which can happen anywhere. Cromwell is a small place that is true but is within a short distance to many beautiful spots. If you dont have a car like myself you can rent a bicycle and go around the trails.I stayed here for 2 nights and i had a great stay!

pros: espresso machine, help finding a job in the area, familial vibe
cons: i felt kinda sketched out by the owner befriending young girls traveling alone, the hostel is small and it felt like there was no place in the hostel where i could go without socializing

There seem to be mixed reviews on here but during my stay, I found the place to be clean and tidy. I had a great sleep... eventually after the girl in the bunk beneath me took her phone call outside. The behaviour of other guests doesn’t reflect the hostel so I can’t fault the hostel itself. Loved that there were so many power sockets. My only negative is that there wasn’t a lot of fridge space.

Just stayed at Cromwell Backpackers for a week whilst visiting friends and sightseeing. What can I say but brilliant!! Sue the Owner is really helpful and knows what and where to visit in the area. The backpackers is spotlessly clean and has excellent facilities. We had such a superb stay there even though we were oldies! Can't wait to go back. Thanks guys xx

Hi Pauline, unfortunately we don't have all 10 beds available any time soon. May I recommend you contact the i-Site on 03 445 0212 to see who else they would recommend. I hope you have a most enjoyable family reunion. Kind regards, Sue
