Our quiet and picturesque camp ground is located just a short 8 kilometres from Cromwell, and is very close to the Bannockburn Inlet of Lake Dunstan. At the Bannockburn Inlet you will find, a safe and tranquil area, suitable for bathing and all water sports. The camp is within easy walking distance to some close by to some fabulous vineyards and wineries, plus both walking and cycling tracks . We have several standard cabins - suitable for families / couples / backpackers and school groups. Unfortunately we do not have any self contained units. Scattered around the spacious grounds are both powered and non powered tent / caravan / motor home sites. Our amenities block offers free hot showers, also coin operated laundry facilities, and new cooking appliances in the kitchen area. There's a couple of comfy couches to sit and watch the TV on plus dvd player and freeview. Zenbu WiFi is available at the camp for a small charge. We welcome overseas tourists, families, couples, backpackers and the many seasonal workers, who come to find work in the local vineyards and orchards. Four legged friends are also welcome, but not to stay in our accommodation units and only at certain times of the year. This is only outside of peak holiday times such as Christmas / New Year/ January / Easter. Please just ask if you have anything you are unsure about.

Detailed Reviews
Last minute pull in for the night on a road trip. easily booked and were shown to cabin. Did have to pay extra for bedding which made it the most expensive cabin in all of our South Island trip. Had a large fridge freezer in cabin which would be handy if you were staying for a few nights. Didn't have to pay for bedding in any other cabin we stayed in. Nice location, not far to drive in to town. Basic amenities, but super clean & smelt freshly serviced.
Ample kitchen space & even a friendly gent who looked after the log fire. Seams majority are long term or weekly worker cabins.
This place could be a gold mine for tourists if it was upgraded and had some TLC . Though we felt a little unsure when we first drove in, we were tired and ran with it. Definity not top notch accommodation, but did the job, comfy beds, plenty of space in cabin, small table & 2 chairs. Something as simple as a couple of new cheap warehouse plastic chairs, rather than a couple of rusty old kitchen chairs would make it a little more inviting.

On first Impressions we were a bit unsure about Cairnmuir but the host was friendly and most helpful. There is lots of space, more showers than most campgrounds and great spacious shower rooms at that… that you don’t need coins for. We left feeling really positive and would recommend this as a great spot on your travels.

We were biking the Lake Dunstan cycle trail so this was just perfect. About one minute cycle to the trail and we were off.
Its an older camp, but everything was clean and tidy.
The hosts kindly let us have a late checkout so we were able to keep our camper parked while we biked the trail.
It was minus one overnight so was great to have power connected. although we heard the fans (to stop the frost on the neighbouring vineyards)it was more a background noise and didnt prevent sleep.
The views over the wineyards was great.

The new Lake Dunstan Trail is a real drawcard for Cromwell , and we're fortunate enough to be so close to part of that trail. Yes, the frost fans can be rather noisy, however we understand that vineyards must protect their crops, it is just a small negative aspect of the area our camping ground is located. Appreciate your review.

From the second we arrived we felt very unwelcomed by the two owners and fellow campers whom call this miserable place home. They have a very cult/gloriavale/hills have eyes atmosphere, you are given a list of rules on arrival as if living in a school boarding hostel, there are cameras watching you and the male owner sits hidden away watching the video monitors in their grubby, cluttered, outdated check-in area. Their two children and permanent residents\cleaners living quarters are conveniently placed in all corners of the grounds to have a watchful eye over visitors and are noticeably seen watching your every move. Our cabin porch was an old pallet with dun bell weights under the corners for height. Inside the cabin was 30yr old stained dirty carpet, ripped curtains, bunk beds with recycled wood for slats, and a mattress needing replaced 10yrs ago, a mini fridge which made me gag each time I opened it and tainted our food. There is no ventilation or fan so be prepared to sleep with the door open in summer and no insulation or heater, there’s nothing like a little frost on the inside of your bedroom windows to humble you. The rubbish bins were overflowing for weeks at a time before being emptied. The motor home waste dump is right in the centre of the campground, I had the pleasure of a front row seats of each disposal from my cabin door, too bad if the wind changed. The clothes washing facilities are ridiculous, they’re expensive, the machines can only handle a few items at a time to still only get a half clean result and the dryers require multiple cycles to get dry clothes. Very upset after some of my clothes were bleached after using the machine also. The kitchen is grimy and has an unpleasant odour, their communal utensils I suspect are a collect of broken, unwanted belongings from past campers, there are three stove tops but good luck finding one element that produces heat. The communal area lighting is set for certain hours so good luck making a coffee without burning yourself before work. There are freezers available and apparently the owners think it is appropriate to move your food to different freezers without any communication. The outdoor areas are messy and depressing, the grass is either dead or it hasn’t seen the sight of a mower since last winter. The owners and other residents dogs are welcomed to do their business where they please. Unfortunately we weren’t even able to enjoy the central Otago fresh area because of the lingering odour of human waste. Something I still can’t wrap my head around is how the supplied bedding mysteriously disappeared half way through our stay, maybe I didn’t read the fine print saying trespassing and invasion of privacy to be expected.

I'm surprised by your review, and yet you stayed with us for at least 2 months Annaliese and Jamie? I'm sure people will form their own opinions and wonder why, if it was so bad, as you portray, why on earth you stayed so long?

This place has really been let go. I was very disappointed to see how little pride is taken in its presentation now. We used to camp here with our kids when they were younger and at that time the camp had the appearance of a well cared for facility. This is no longer the case. It is rough, untidy and needs a good clean. The office area is very messy which does not make a good first impression. Ongoing maintenance appears to be neglected and areas are taped off. Mice running round the kitchen at night was an unpleasant surprise too! (It is not hard to set a few mousetraps to solve that problem.) It is so sad to see the way this camp has slipped. It is in an amazing setting and within brief walking distance of awesome wineries. It could be so much better than it currently is!

A very cheerful and accommodating lady at reception squeezed us in at peak time, without a booking. The holiday park is far from perfect, but what it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up in service and location. Yes, the toilet block could do with some paint, but we found them clean at all times. The same goes for the shower facilities. If you want a boutique, this isn't it. If you want a holiday park that your kids will love, with a family friendly atmosphere, this is it.

Organised a very visit of 9-12 year old girls. The price was more than reasonable and the facilities were great. Some open spaces for evening games and clean cooking facilities. Like that the large cabins had a side room for in our case, adults to sleep in.

We stayed here as we were riding the Dunstan trail. We were a bit apprehensive having read some negative reviews. This was not our experience, everyone we met were really nice, the place was very clean and the price was extremely reasonable. Would happily stay there anytime.

Stayed one night in a powered pitch for campervan. Would not recommend. Well below the standard we have found elsewhere in NZ. Needs refurbishment. Scruffy with run down caravans also on site. We booked as near wineries. WiFi did not work. Disappointing.

Needs major refurbishment. Not a fussy camper but needs a bomb under it and re-doing. Felt like a homeless camp.
Could be a great spot with financial input and care.
Need 200 characters to complete review, so, you can find a few of them at the camp.

We are sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Our facilities are older, yes that's true. Yes,you are right, the whole lot needs bulldozed, and that's exactly what our new landlord intends to do, and then our wee camp, will be GONE , and the 30 lovely residents, will have nowhere to go, and neither will you , as Cromwell will have only one camping ground to cope with the seasonal workers , tourists and families.

Hi.
Yes you would need to book for the time frame you are talking about.
Regards
Martine
As we are new to Tripadvisor, you may not necessarily get a response from someone who has stayed in our camp, can you tell me exactly what information you would like to know??
The winery you are referring to is Akarua, they have a tasting room where you can sample their delicious wines, as do Carrick , which also offers lunchtime dining. Within walking distance there are 4 wineries for wine lovers to visit.
