Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Al & Kathy were very friendly and welcoming! They are a treasure trove of information. They built the house themselves, literally! It has a gorgeous view of the ocean and the sunset. One can walk to the beach with no one around, at least that's how it was when I was there. The house is great. Breakfast was filling and good. I enjoyed spending time with them and staying at their place! I wholeheartedly recommend it!

We had the whole ground floor, just for the two of us. When we arrived in the pooring rain, the fire was already burning at the fireplace and the flat was cosy and warm. Kathleen and Alister gave us a warm-hearted welcome. They are a ever so nice couple who care a lot about their guests. Alister told us stories about his ancestors and the life in New Zealand generally.
The flat has a specious bedroom, 2 beds apart, an equipped kitchen, shower and toilet. We had WIFI, enough plug sockets and TV. We even could use Kathleen's washing machine and dryer on the upper floor. And we had a marvellous breakfast there together with our hosts.
So sorry we could only stay one night! But thank you so much - we really felt at home.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kallyhouse. The hosting couple is adorable and incredibly nice. We felt like visiting relatives. Whatever we had asked them, they were always friendly and helpful. The rooms are lovely and really big, breakfast was awesome and they helped us to organize the travel back to Christchurch. Unfortunately we were only staying for one night, we could have been talking for days to our host.

If you come to Kallyhouse, you will be welcomed and you will find that your accommodation is spacious, well appointed and with sea views accompanied by the gentle roar of the Tasman Sea as it sweeps onto the shore completely uninterrupted since either Australia or the Antarctic.

You will receive a more pleasant briefing than on any aeroplane and you will not need to know where your life jackets are or whether there is oxygen or not. If you are here it is to visit the Punikiaki rocks then you are well placed. If not, well you'd better have another good reason as there is nothing else around here that we know of that is a stand out attraction other than the wonderful wildness of the west coast.

An if you are recommended the Tavern near the rocks, you'll be absolutely fine provided you like deep fried food. If not I'd give that a miss and come well prepared with your own food which you will have no problem preparing in the well appointed kitchen with cooker, fridge freezer etc. Enjoy your stay.

In the middle of nothing, we arrived and were soon left alone by one of the hosts - the husband was ill -, and the small apartement where we stayed was really big, but the bed sheets smelled bad, the breakfast was already served before we arrived (and when I say served I mean small portions of cornflakes already put on our eating bowls and jelly and fruits without coverings on the table!)...
In the morning, we clapped twice the doors of our car to see if someone would come out, but no! We left without saying goodbye..!
Probably they just had a bad day, but that wasn't really acceptable...

We stopped at Kallyhouse because we didn't fancy a long drive from Abel Tasman all the way to Fox Glacier and it's a good half way stopping point. We had the upstairs room which was fine for us and had lovely views. Alistair and Kath are very attentive hosts who will give you much local advice. And Alistair is fascinating to talk to about all manner of subjects, including the best time to see the blowholes at nearby Punakaki rocks.

We only stayed one night here but felt really at home with the lovely welcome from Alistair and Kathleen. They gave us lots of great info (including some short info dvd's on surrounding areas on their huge TV!). Alistair booked us into the nearby tavern (15 min drive) for dinner- which was busy so it is recommended to book - where we had a great dinner in a 'good pub atmosphere'.
Breakfast was lovely and it was so nice to sit down and eat with our hosts and other guests and chat. I would have been quite happy to move in!

Magnificent B&B apartment. Our hosts were fantastic and shared a lot of their knowledge with us. We felt very welcomed and had this beautiful view on the sea, with a marvelous sunset. Off course the good weather that day helped a lot. Bed is excellent and breakfast really really good! Kathleen and Alister, thank you very much!

We arrived a bit late in the day and Allister showed us the downstairs room. It was clean and fully equipped and furnished like a studio apartment. Private kitchen, laundry, living area, plenty sleeping room for a family, and most of all a great view of the Tasman Sea. The room was a nice private space that you felt it was your own. We slept very well because we were away from everyone upstairs and its so peaceful there next to the ocean. We were hungry right away from long travels and he made us reservations at the local restaurant and got everything taking care of for us. Breakfast was very simple continental breakfast with wonderful conversations. Its unfortunate we only stayed 1 night and we arrived so late the day before. A really nice plus on the location is that its just walking distance down the road from the Tasman Sea so after dinner we walked down to the ocean. Kathy and Allister were wonderful hosts and extremely helpful. Thank you so much!

Stayed for 2 nights in February in very comfortable and spacious accommodation with fantastic views. Hosts Alistair & Kathleen were extremely helpful & very friendly, providing us with advice on eating places, tide times & weather forecast and giving us fruit and even some eggs from their hens!
