Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Set in the most spectacular spot near the beach, we had everything we needed and the extra bonus of a hot tub and fire. The hosts Nigel and Karen are really welcoming and have a wealth of knowledge of the local area. Definitely worth a stop over on a long road trip!

The cabin has everything you need to be self sufficient, it is a short walk to explore the beach and you can relax in the hot tub anytime you want. Nigel has great recommendations for things to do on the Coast.

Nigel and Karen have thought of everything that you need to manage the varied West Coast weather such as gumboots for walking down to the beach.

I recommend dinner at the All Nations pub which is a short drive down the road, great atmosphere, nice kai and lovely people running it.

Such a wonderful place to stay. The property is warm, comfortable, clean and perfect for a stay. The setting is beautiful and private. Based in Blackball makes it easy access to Punakaiki or Greymouth. At night you can just hear the sea, just enough to lull you to sleep without being invasive. We didn't use the hot tub, but it was readily available and looked a lovely place to relax. Will definitely be visiting again!

I’ve booked in November a standard studio with a balcony & sea view for couple of nights ( new year eve) via booking.com!
The host ( Nigel) rang me a day after and asked me to cancel my booking through booking.com and just come over on the day as he can’t afford their commission! I did as requested as I felt for him!
We arrived with our new born baby and instead of the room we have booked we received a disgusting place attached to barn! No view, no balcony, dirty & dusty with a portable toilet which made everything worst with its disgusting ongoing smell 😷
The host is an absolutely rude mad man & racist! I wish I could have record all he said and shared here! After all his offensive comments he said he doesn’t care if we’re not happy & this is what it is! Also he tried to overcharge us with asking more than what it was on booking.com however we didn’t pay which made him more grumpy! Since it was holiday season and everywhere fully booked we had to stay there but it was the worst place ever I’ve seen in my life!! Have to add he also rented out the yard in front of us to a camper van and since the place has neither curtains nor keys, we had no privacy! He disappeared in the morning & we had to deal with no hot water ( with our new born baby) for the rest of our staying!
As I have booked this place to surprise my husband I felt too embarrassed however he’s all about let it go, these 2 days will go and we’ll forget this accommodation & this horrible host!
He made the worst holiday for 3 of us not only with false advertising about his place which is literally a barn not standard studio but also with his abusive, offensive, racist language & loud tone!

We stayed in the cabin, so very well equipped, with all the little nice touches that make you feel at home. Nigel was very welcoming and friendly. Great to have a good walk on the beach, it felt wild and we had it all to ourselves. Good value for sure.

We were very disappointed with the quality of luxury accommodation advertised. It was a pop up caravan with an ill fitting mattress, the tiniest of shower and toilet cubicle, which a child or small person would have fitted. The hosts were wonderful though, but they are only caretakers.

We had a great stay with Nigel and Karen in they homestay. We enjoyed a dinner with both which Karen prepared with home grown vegetables.
Roxy also lives there and is a very cute dog.

The house is close to the beach and only 17 km from the pancake rocks.

My family and I were warmly welcomed into Karen & Nigel’s home and were spoilt with the delicious meal Karen cooked for us.
It was easy to relax and was close to all the activities we did in Barrytown.
My highlight was walking along the beach just out the back of their property with Roxy their gorgeous and equally as welcoming dog.

We stayed with Nigel and Karen for two nights.
They are two of the nicest hosts you could ever wish for.
They make you feel right at home and will cook you a great meal if you like.
The place is immaculate and very spacious.
Their home is on the west coast and have beautiful sunsets overlooking the Tasman Sea. We highly recommend this place if you happen to be passing by this beautiful area.

Positives:
- Location: away from touristy Punakaiki and a short drive to Motukieke Beach
- Cottage was very spacious (consisted of one large room that could sleep up to 5 people, kitchen, living are and a separate bathroom)
- Kitchen was well equipped
- Wood heater in the cottage (fire wood was provided)
- Outdoor hot tub
- Free WiFi
- Friendly host

Negatives:
- If you advertise "breakfast included", there is an expectation that a reasonably substantial breakfast will be provided per day, not just few slices of bread (looking like leftovers from previous occupants), jam and cereal, for the whole stay.
