Excellent relaxing spot with great view over the water. Busy but friendly and attentive staff. Meals well cooked and flavoursome. Accommodation - ground floor unit - clean bedroom and bathroom, some stains to carpet in small lounge area with dated furniture and small outside seating area. Decent value for price charged.

While spending a few days driving around east cape, we stopped for a late lunch at this very pleasant, characterful settlement and pub. Having driven from Opotiki with almost nothing open for kai along the way, we were thrilled to find this lodge serving meals all afternoon. For movie fans, one of the drawcards is being able to experience firsthand the setting of the movie Boy, and one of the areas where the filmmaker Taika Waititi spent his childhood. For those who enjoy fishing, the attraction is huge. For the rest of us, the setting is idyllic, the people friendly and the wairua of the place palpable. There was a fishing competition in progress, with huge tuna being weighed and filleted, and boats and trailers everywhere. All visible from the table where we sat enjoying our meal. We ordered the fisherman’s basket, and were pleased when the wait staff told us that would be more than enough for the two of us. She was right - $38 sounded pricy, but it was definitely a meal for two. Toilets, car parking outside and the general store next door if there are items you want to pick up before you hit the road again. Waihau Bay is a five star place and experience while travelling in this remote and special part of Aotearoa.

The Bay Lodge is located in a good position overlooking the jetty and launch area. It was very busy with a fishing tournament when we were here. It was quite odd that you had to order food and drinks from two different places - however, we managed to order 3 fish and chips plus a scotch fillet from one bar and 3 Tui’s from the other bar. The food came quickly but it was only average at the best.

My husband and I recently travelled to Waihau Bay to have a holiday that was cancelled by the first covid lockdown. We were looking forward to this break for quite some time. We were booked into a room in the budget accommodation for two nights, then three nights in the studio and back to budget for the last three nights.
We arrived on dark and given a key and told to up to the accommodation up the hill. We were not told that the door was accessed from the back of the building and after looking at the ranch sliders and seeing no key lock we went round the back. The rooms are numbered but room 10 is just a 1. On entering the room we noticed a piece of disgarded chewing gum in the corner of the room. We opened the ranch slider door and then realised it could not be locked. On advising the bar staff I was told that they would advise their maintenance man. Two bases for smoke alarm on the ceiling but no smoke alarm.
The communial kitchen was basic but the cultery drawer had a broken handle and was coming apart. It only had one knife, three spoons, no forks and a wooden stirrer. The edge of the roofing iron the on kitchen roof has rusted off and after a down pour the water was leaking inside the kitchen by the window and running down the wall.
I advise the bar staff that there were no paper towels in the ladies toilets and it was was finally put in the day before we left (five days after they had been told).
We then moved to the studio room which was of much better quality but they should not advertise it as a serviced apartment when the rubbish stayed there for three days and the towels were not replenished each day. On opening the bathroom wall cabinet the centre shelf was covered in flies (have picture if needed).
Next back to budget room. Room 13. Dresser with handle missing, smoke alarm sitting on the dresser and the ranch slider frame falling off the glass (have picture if needed). Notice room 11 had duck tape holding the window shut on the outside.
The maintenance man has quite a bit work to do.
On the bright side. We ate dinner in the dining room six out of the eight nights we were there. The meals were basic but they were very well cooked, presented, plentiful and delicious. The dining room staff were brilliant. Friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed their company.
For such a magnificant setting it is a shame that a bit more care could not be taken of the accommodation. Whether you are spending $70 or $140 it is not too much to expect the accommodation to be clean and functional.

We were motorhoming and found Orete Point almost accidentally.
It felt like a lovely little fishing village and so we decided to stay and take a spot in the campground attached to the lodge.
We (a) paid our $60 for a site without power and (b) bought a round of drinks, but despite this when we asked for the wi-fi password we were told we'd have to buy a 1GB package.
On the entire trip around the Cape, and on many other trips, this is the first time we'd been asked to buy wi-fi when we're spending money at the establishment anyway.
So we drank our drinks and saved our emails for another day and made our own dinner rather than spend more money at a place where the staff hadn't made us feel welcome any.
Though we had a lovely chat to a local family sitting outside the pub. They were as friendly as..
We were entitled to use the camp facilities and the ablution block, albeit a bit of a walk on a cold wet night and morning, was very clean and fresh, with good heat and pressure in the shower (one shower each for men and women).
We didn't use the kitchen but that was also clean and fresh.
On the surface the hotel looked freshly painted and nice, but behind one could see evidence of peeling paint and boards in need of replacing. We didn't see inside the rooms of course.
Lovely spot.
Skip the lodge.

We were booked into the budget accommodation for over night stay at a cost of $110 for 2. We paid this same amount for a lovely, well appointed and cared for cabin at Waikanae Beach Holiday Park a few days later!
After locating our room, not that easy and up dodgy steps, we went into our room. A queen, single and bunks, a mirror on a wee table, a heater and that was it. The bed base was quite damaged, carpet pretty rough and looked grubby. The curtains were ok but not hung that well and the back door had such a gap in it that we had to find some cardboard to jam into it to stop it rattling.
Only one shower & 2 toilets in each of the men's & women's toilet blocks and around 12 people staying when we were there. The kitchen, while clean, needed lots of TLC as does the accommodation block which is green with mould and has peeling paint all along the back where you enter your rooms. The paths and steps are very uneven and could do someone a significant injury especially as we had to negotiate our way around utes and boats and the ground was slippery clay after rain the night before.
We bought f & c for our evening meal from the restaurant - very good.
Such a shame as the views out from our very rumbling and unevenly opening ranchslider were superb. Obviously they rely on this view to have people book there.
we were there with a group and none of us were impressed with the facilities.
Such a shame as it is a picturesque spot and, with a bit of money spent and hard work to upgrade and some ongoing maintenance, this would be a great place to spend a couple of nights. I have to say we were only thankful that we hadn't booked more nights there.

We stayed in the unit above the bar & restaurant & it was very clean & smelt fresh. It was spacious with 6 x beds, 2 bathrooms, a well appointed kitchen & dinning area with a balcony & the most beautiiful views of the bay & ocean! Highly recommend!

Great food and such reasonable prices. Would really recommend the fish and chips if you are ever passing through Waihau Bay. Even thought It is quite hidden out the way I would take the time from my route and take a break here.

Our group of 10 stayed overnight here on our drive around the Cape.
We occupied the two upstairs apartments above the hotel - awesome.
Huge lounge/dining area/kitchen, and three sleeping areas - catering for 6.
We dined downstairs in the hotel - reasonable and tasty meals. All staff we encountered on booking and during our stay were pleasant and friendly
