The Heritage is in a great day location on the main street, a short walk from the thermal pools. I ordered room service which was delivered quickly and really tasty, although the menu is quite limited. The bed was very comfortable. My only complaint is that it was warm, and like most places I stayed on the South Island, there was no air conditioning. There was a pedestal fan which I utilised to cool my garden view room.

The people (CPG Hotels) who have taken over the old Heritage Hotel have done a great job. The hotel has a good atmosphere and a great restaurant. It also has a decent-sized heated pool in which we enjoyed a pre-dinner dip. The hotel is in a spacious garden setting and is centrally situated in Hanmer village, very close to the pools. You don't need to drive anywhere.
In the restaurant our starter of freshly baked bread with dukkah and olive oil was the best I have ever had - very fresh. My steak, which I requested to be between medium and well done (something which chefs can easily get wrong) was perfect, and reasonably priced. Also the chef came out after the meal and asked the diners how their meal was.
As we were staying for two nights, we opted for one of the larger Superior King rooms, which was a good call, although the standard rooms are a reasonable size.
Full breakfast was included in our deal, which was top quality and very good value. Once again, at our final breakfast the manager came and asked us and the other guests how our stay had been.
Only thing stopping me from giving a five star rating was that the bed, whist large, was a bit saggy.

Everyone we dealt with was helpful and friendly. The whole stay was great value for money and the location worked really well we were able to park our car and walk everywhere. Even though the temperatures outside were cold, we were cosy and warm inside.

Location is in the middle of the village. We booked a family room for three adults (17 yo son). The room was on the first floor up two flights of stairs (no lift or assistance with luggage) the rooms have no air conditioning and a small heater so don’t stay during summer), there was a small pedestal fan. There was one queen size bed and the second bed was a fold out couch which was okay for our teenage son but would not be any good for an older adult. The fit out is reminiscent of the 70s although the bed was comfortable and the rooms were clean the staff are friendly. The bathroom was clean but unfortunately outdated and the floor tiles were lethal when wet.

There is a small bar fridge in the room but no minibar service or water on arrival, The restaurant is fine but there is no room service.

For a price point of $220 per night the accommodation needs a refresh the installation of air conditioning and some little luxuries like water on arrival, all of these little things would help the property immensely

This review is purely in relation to the restaurant.
We looked at the online evening a la carte menu and the same one displayed outside the premises and decided that it provided a tasty offering that could be enjoyed on a cold winters night in the ambiance of the historic hotel and its roaring log fire, something we have previously enjoyed in its former days of the Heritage.
We were badly let down. The menu had been changed and our preferred choice of "freshly baked bread with infused olive oil and dukkah" and "aged scotch fillet with roast potatoes and steamed greens with salad and seasonal vegetable extras" had been substituted with "fried bread" and "ribeye steak". No apology offered, just "oh dear, someone hasn't changed the menu advertising". In fairness the chef hastily arranged for ciabatta with butter (that served in the little plastic containers often found at the breakfast buffet) and a Flintstone steak (nicely cooked). Sadly the side dishes amounted to a bowl of chips and a slice of broccolini as they did not have any other vegetable or salad available. The range of food offering is therefore poor and not what is advertised.
The place lacks any ambiance. It is a vast sprawling room that is bland and the staff have no interest in the patrons. No one asked if we enjoyed the meal. At around 8.30pm whilst still eating our main course the waitress rudely shouted across from the bar to enquire as to whether we wanted any desserts as they were about to cash up the till and we were the last customers there. We declined and a few minutes later, whilst still eating the main course, the waitress came to the table with the mobile eftpos machine to take payment!. That was our last interaction with staff as shortly afterwards a group of four of them decided it was their turn to enjoy the evening fodder. Photo attached of the happy group sat in the centre of the restaurant in front of the fire enjoying a meal! Not one member of staff had any regard for us as a patron. We finished our meal and wine and departed noticing on our way out that the roaring log fire that we had been looking forward to was just a smouldering pile of ash. The waitress, perhaps realising her lack of attention, offered to throw a log on but sadly it was all too little too late. The CPG group who have taken this on need to raise their game pretty quickly if it has any prospect of success.

Kia ora, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns with me. We were transitioning towards a new winter menu and we used this Friday to do this. We clearly did not execute this to our desired standards and absolutely accept your concerns. I wish to apologize for our short comings and can reassure you strongly we have discussed these events and the actions we need to undertake to ensure we do not fall below our own expected standards. We have delivered excellent results to date by way of food quality ad service as our TripAdvisor post can confirm. We have taken your concerns very much to heart as we are very proud of what we have been working towards as an experience we all want to be proud of. I am very happy to discuss this with you directly. Please email me on gm@hanmerspringshotel.com to allow us to recover from this situation. Kind regards Graeme Back General Manager

Arriving at this property immediately reduces the stress levels. The charming building, the immaculately presented gardens and the warm welcome sets the traveler at ease.
Of course, for the weary traveler the room is of utmost importance. Our room was spacious and renovations to bring the room up to modern day requirements were well done. The king bed was the most comfortable bed that we have experienced anywhere ( we have travelled extensively.
The location of the hotel is just a short stroll to the spa, restaurant s are also very close by.
The front desk staff deserve praise, in particular Kurt.
We did not use a lift to access our room and to be honest I do not know if there is one. We also took our own bags to the room via one set of stairs.
I think the breakfast which was included in our booking was quite good but could benefit from a little fine tuning on the pastries offered though in saying that one can order a variety of egg styles as well the buffet.

With the property recently reopening it was perfect time to grab a short break away while the weather is still great. All of the staff were berry friendly and helpful. The hotel has had a refit and looks great. Breakfast was value for money and the happy hour drinks as well the snack light meal menu are reasonably priced. Defiantly return again.

Hammer Springs Hotel you are in for a real treat. From the front desk to the cleaners you are greeted with such warmth, it just sort of wraps around you. This glorious hotel is just wonderful. Slap bang in the centre of Hammer Springs, walking distances everything. Our bedroom was clean, light and bright and our bed so comfortable. We had the only spa bath in hotel room 107 if that’s what you want. They have their own restaurant and bar and a roaring fire for those cold nights, it really was the icing on the cake. The grounds are magnificent, so well groomed and looked after, with love attention and detail. When we had to leave early due to weather conditions, a refund was offered, no problems and all smiles. I highly recommend x 10.

Very happy I chose the Hotel for my daughter and husband’s belated birthday dinner! The food was well presented, very flavoursome and, although the servings looked a little on the small side, very filling therefore value for money; I had a couple of big eaters in our family group.
The chilly evening outside was offset by the fabulous open fire, lovely warm seating areas inside.
The staff were very pleasant and engaging, the food service good in spite of there being a large group amongst other diners.
The chef came out to each table, enquiring about the meals, which I always appreciate.
So why only 4/5 rating? The ambiance of the bar & restaurant area was ‘off’. All five of us mentioned it and we range from mid/late 20s to late 50s! Unfortunately none of us could articulate what was off.
The earlier background music was subdued and pleasant, appropriate for the style of the building; we were able to hold a conversation without having to shout over music. However, as our meal was ending the sound changed to a tinny, hard sound as if a too-small radio were being used.
We’d still eat there again, looking forward to trying Pasta Thursday

We stayed for four nights at the Hanmer Hotel.

The hotel is a beautiful old building located right in the centre of town. The grounds are vast and well maintained.

Overall the rooms were clean and well maintained. The bathroom was tidy and water pressure in the shower was very good. A small kitchenette with a kettle and bar fridge is in the room and a selection of teas, coffee, and hot chocolate are provided. For the most part it is a standard style hotel room.

The service from reception was good and towels are provided upon request if you are heading to the nearby thermal pools.

By far the most enjoyable part of our stay was our breakfasts and dinners at the hotel restaurant. The wait staff were so lovely, and the food absolutely exquisite. Although there is no shortage of dining options in Hanmer Springs I would certainly encourage anybody to try the restaurant here, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
