Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Nice place to stay. Clean and tidy, good place for using as a base. There is a very narrow kitchen area and a table for 2 in the entrance of the unit (not so great when the unit is designed for 4), I would personally not like to spend much time in the unit, as not designed for relaxing / only sleeping. The only TV is in the main bedroom, so everyone would need to come into there and sit on bed to watch TV.  As, I said, we were told the premises are currently being done up, as the shower (and shower curtain), and kitchen is average at present.  However, the place was clean and the beds comfortable. One room had a queen/king and the other room had 2 singles. The place itself was quiet, therefore the place suited our requirements - as we ate out in the town centre, what has a lot to offer, and only used the place to sleep. There is an outdoor area, but no table or chairs, so unless you bring a picnic blanket, no where to sit. I only ventured into the main house twice, which looked stunning inside.  The first was upon arrival and the second was when leaving - this was a little awkward, as no one came, I called out and waited for about 10 minutes.  Another guest came out to try help, and also mentioned he had not seen the staff - so I decided to leave the key on the hall table and left.  All in all this is a good place stay - I would not recommend the motel units for anything other than a base.

Stayed for 5 nights. Place was clean and the bed was comfortable. I was lucky and had a queen sized room with en-suite. Some of our group were sharing twin rooms and the rooms were taller than they were wide. Shared kitchen had everything you needed and Laundry facilities were available. Nowhere in the room to hang clothes. The Villa was very well presented.

Great location in Main Street , we stayed in main house , lovely spotlessly clean room , warm and comfortable. Friendly welcome from the owner who was very accommodating. Huge kitchen with plenty of tea, coffee, drinks machine etc, Great laundry facilities $2 wash, $4 dry, ironing board if needed. Everything all brand new and clean. The house is a beautiful 1901,building with great history. Lovely comfortable lounge too. We chose Cambridge as a perfect location for the Hobbiton tour, an easy 35 minute drive. We ate in the evening in the Alpha bar & restaurant about 10-15 minute walk and would recommend. Thank you Valmai house.

Didn't start well, got there mid afternoon & the place was all locked up. Rang the bell to recieve the first frosty reception. That night it rained heavily & the neighbours gutter overflowed so badly they were concerned water was going to come into the unit. Our room was average with sheets that seemed to be made of sail cloth, they rustled every time you moved in the bed. Bed was really comfortable apart from that. Our room was not made up properly during our 3 night stay. Second day we had to go inside to get coffee & another frosty reception, nothing was done to the unit the previous day. Third day, again no coffee, but instead of frosties we got denial, I think I know when there has been no coffee delivered to the unit. Check out day & she couln't even wait for us to vacate the unit (on time) before barging in to drop off towels (but no coffee). I suggest there are better venues for the price.

A friend and I stayed in Unit 1 of the motel units. There was a very large room with a super king bed, TV, 2 comfortable chairs, and several drawers for storage. Another room had 3 single beds and a wardrobe. There was a shower and toilet in a large room, and a hand-basin in a separate alcove. The spacious kitchen was fully equipped and had a small dining table. The unit was very clean, the beds were very comfortable and had crisp cotton sheets, there was an electric heater in each bedroom, there was little traffic noise, and the owner and staff were very friendly and helpful. Wifi was available but occasionally the signal was quite weak. There were some small inconveniences in the unit e.g. no wardrobe in the larger bedroom but the price was so reasonable that these were acceptable.

We stayed in a motel which had everything we needed although I was surprised to find the TV was an old 14inch brick and not a flat screen. We had wanted to organise our onward bookings from here but, could not get wifi. The owner came out once to try and sort it and said she would reset it but, didn't come back to check if it had been successful, which it wasn't! This was really inconvenient and I have to say the owner didn't seem too bothered. If you advertise wifi then make sure it's available.

Valmai House is exceptional value for money set in a small tree filled township perfect for downtime, or to use as a base. The accommodation consists of a main B and B House, along with detached motel like accommodation consisting of self contained units. We stayed in a 2 bed unit which was very basic, but extremely clean. Beds were very comfortable. Good value for money. On a side note, had some Indian from "Hello Indian". The meals were fantastic.

We stayed for only one night on our way back to Auckland but were delighted to come across a real gem. The high ceilings in the house, built at the turn of the 20th century, were particularly memorable and the hosts are clearly intent on retaining the true quality of the era. Hostess Leanne was particularly friendly and helpful. If you want a touch of quality, a stay in the house could not be more highly recommended. Chris and Deirdre Francis (UK tourists)
