Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We've been staying at the Crossing for a number of years and the new-ish owners have made a great job of keeping the kitchen and dining areas clean and today, as well as stocked with plenty of cutlery, utensils and tea towels. There's also a lot of great signage and information about. The bunks are very comfortable and we love staying here because it's central in-between Whakapapa and Turoa so we have a choice of the two.

Good - The room was simple but practical, we were upgraded to 8 beds for 6 of us so we could have more space which was very nice. Facilities were good with the option of own cubical showers. Fun movie room in what looks like a cupboard with table tennis and couches. Kitchens were well equipped.

Bad - WiFi was given with vouchers (200 MB each person) which was very limiting and no signal in the room to use personal data or calls.

Thanks for your comments, there is the option of purchasing more WIFI if required. Due to our location WIFI and phone signal can be disrupted at times, we are constantly looking at how we can improve this with providers.

We stayed here for four nights during winter season. The Whakapapa skiing region is just a 20-minute drive away and easy to reach. To rooms are clean and tidy, all communal areas (kitchen, bathrooms, games room) were nice and clean, way better than other hostels we've stayed in!
The owners gave us an upgrade from a double room to a family room, with own kitchenette and bathroom as well as a terrasse, due to no other visitors. that just added to the overall positive impression of this place.

So if you're looking for an affordable place to stay and relax, away from busy city life and within close proximity to Mt Ruhapehu and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - I can highly recommend The Crossing Backpackers!

The hostel has a lot of amenities, but is far from the closest town. If you bring groceries when you arrive there is an amazing kitchen, but you will need a car to access town. The place is simple, but extremely clean. Clean bathrooms, showers, and sheets. The mattresses are very thin. There is a nice laundry facility, and lounge. Dinning room is large with amazing views. Perfect place to stay while doing the crossing.

My husband and I booked the Crossing package here at the height of summer. When we arrived, we discovered that the Tongariro Crossing was closed and we were unable to do the hike. The lovely owner upgraded our room to a beautiful ensuite family room and gave us tons of advice on other hikes to do, as well as where to go for good meals in the village. We had a lovely stay. The facilities are excellent and the hostel is very clean and well maintained. My favorite thing was the "Backup Staff" for Gandalf, which is displayed in the hostel.

We had 2 rooms of 6 bunks for 2 nights. Did a snowcraft exercise and climb of Mt Ruapehu on the Saturday, and a walk of the Marton Sash & Door trail on the Sunday. The bunk rooms were very hot with the overnight heating so we kept the windows open the second night. Kitchen was well equipped although there was only one teaspoon. The dining area was roomy and warm and the lounge was cosy with the fire on. The bathrooms could do with more ventilation - the floors in particular were wet and slippery a lot of the time. More rubber matting would also be good.

Thanks for your comments. Great that you enjoyed your activities around our beautiful region. We have sorted out the extractor fans in the bathrooms which has improved the issue. Unfortunately no matter how many teaspoons we supply they disapear and Regulating central heating to suit everyone can be difficult.

This is a great place to get away from the city.
Awesome, friendly budget accommodation. Rooms are spacious. The shared kitchen is well equipped and sparkling clean. All areas are clean and warm.
We regularly come down as a family. The movie room and social area is great for the kids to unwind after an active day.
This trip was just me. This is an ideal base for adventures.

We booked the summer special and staid for two nights in order to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Transfer was perfectly organized. Hotel room was clean and staff was very helpful and friendly. Only the shower in the family room is not the best for bigger persons (not adjustable). The Whirlpool to relax after the Crossing was also very nice!

This place is awesome. Games room with great pool table, secret tv/movie room. Kitten is really well equipped, drying room. The rooms are comfortable and warm, and the whole place has a ski lodge type feel. Hostless entry is easy as, just make sure you can hook up to the wifi.
A lot of thought has gone into this place and it really is very cool.

Well, we were picked up around 6.30 a.m. and driven to the starting point. After completing the trek, we were offered two pick-up times for the way back, one for the faster guys (which in fact we were) around 3.30 p.m., another one around 5 p.m. They take your mobile phone number, in case.
