Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

No staff on site. We were the only people staying and it felt unsafe. Doors to the building were unlocked and open to anyone to enter. The contact 'Mike' was in the Philippines, and was unhelpful. We were given the wrong room. Booked a family room for 5 with a bunk bed, double bed and a single. The single bed was a bunk on top of the double. Not suitable for our friend over 6ft tall. Mike said that was the right room. We initially wanted the family room with ensuite but were told that wasn't available (weird, since no one else was there). Room wasn't clean, there was an m&m on the floor. Female bathrooms had chopped hair in the sinks. People came in as 'cleaners' when we popped to the shops for 10 minutes. Apparently stayed in the house behind the lodge and felt like they waited for us to leave before coming inside. Sneaky and rude - didn't introduce themselves earlier when we were at the lodge all afternoon. They appeared to be tourists, probably working illegally. The lodge was 15degrees the entire time. We were cold from the walk and messaged Mike saying we were cold and asked for some wood for the fire. He said fire doesn't work and 15 degrees was a 'good temperature', the central heating kicked in only when the temp dropped below 13 degrees. Didn't help us further. It was warmer outside. There were no extra blankets offered. Spa wasn't working and probably hasn't for ages. Showers were hot and kitchen appliances worked fine - the only positives really. Overall, a poor stay.

Good - The room was simple but practical, we were upgraded to 8 beds for 6 of us so we could have more space which was very nice. Facilities were good with the option of own cubical showers. Fun movie room in what looks like a cupboard with table tennis and couches. Kitchens were well equipped. Bad - WiFi was given with vouchers (200 MB each person) which was very limiting and no signal in the room to use personal data or calls.

Thanks for your comments, there is the option of purchasing more WIFI if required. Due to our location WIFI and phone signal can be disrupted at times, we are constantly looking at how we can improve this with providers.

One of many stays here, always a hit with the kids with the rustic games room, secret narnia cinema room and daisy the pig. Highly recommended for value for money and easy access to both ski fields (car park booking allowing).

We stayed here for four nights during winter season. The Whakapapa skiing region is just a 20-minute drive away and easy to reach. To rooms are clean and tidy, all communal areas (kitchen, bathrooms, games room) were nice and clean, way better than other hostels we've stayed in! The owners gave us an upgrade from a double room to a family room, with own kitchenette and bathroom as well as a terrasse, due to no other visitors. that just added to the overall positive impression of this place. So if you're looking for an affordable place to stay and relax, away from busy city life and within close proximity to Mt Ruhapehu and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - I can highly recommend The Crossing Backpackers!

This is a great place to get away from the city. Awesome, friendly budget accommodation. Rooms are spacious. The shared kitchen is well equipped and sparkling clean. All areas are clean and warm. We regularly come down as a family. The movie room and social area is great for the kids to unwind after an active day. This trip was just me. This is an ideal base for adventures.

We had 2 rooms of 6 bunks for 2 nights. Did a snowcraft exercise and climb of Mt Ruapehu on the Saturday, and a walk of the Marton Sash & Door trail on the Sunday. The bunk rooms were very hot with the overnight heating so we kept the windows open the second night. Kitchen was well equipped although there was only one teaspoon. The dining area was roomy and warm and the lounge was cosy with the fire on. The bathrooms could do with more ventilation - the floors in particular were wet and slippery a lot of the time. More rubber matting would also be good.

Thanks for your comments. Great that you enjoyed your activities around our beautiful region. We have sorted out the extractor fans in the bathrooms which has improved the issue. Unfortunately no matter how many teaspoons we supply they disapear and Regulating central heating to suit everyone can be difficult.

We've been staying at the Crossing for a number of years and the new-ish owners have made a great job of keeping the kitchen and dining areas clean and today, as well as stocked with plenty of cutlery, utensils and tea towels. There's also a lot of great signage and information about. The bunks are very comfortable and we love staying here because it's central in-between Whakapapa and Turoa so we have a choice of the two.

Clean, friendly, great facilities: kitchen, showers etc. Friendly owners. Awesome. Stayed in shared dorm and the other guests were also friendly. Take your own groceries due to location. But I'd recommend this place to anyone
