10 person trip to do the Tongariro crossing. The team at the Chalet and cafe turned what was a budget trip into a memorable experience. The rooms were comfortable and warm. The food at the cafe was excellent and the shuttle to and from the mountain was reliable and friendly. How they combined the three together turned a good trip into a great one. Fantastic people.

We found this place to be comfortable and handy for the ski field, the place is a bit dated and found a couple of electrical items not working and as the office is unmanned letting someone know was difficult, the place had all appliances to be able to cook meals, great views of mountain on a clear day.Would stay there again.

After booking to stay at Alpine Chalets a few weeks ago,we got shockingly disappointed when they cancelled our booking 48hours before our trip.

Cancellation can be understandable but the manner in which they failed to communicate is appalling.Initially we booked for 2 adults and a baby via their website and it went through successfully.

We called to discuss arrangements for our baby at which time they said they dont accept under 2 year old children. But because we had made the booking already, they promised to honour the booking via email.

Yesterday suddenly they
decided to cancel our booking over fears our baby would disturb other guests. This threw our plans into disarray as accommodation is very hard to find during school holidays coupled with the Covid situation.

Why did they not reject the booking in the first place and mislead us over email when they were clearly given the babys age?

Why did they wait for 48hours before we travel to Tongariro to cancel the booking

They are clearly not professional and need better customer service and communication skills.

Not impressed

Good location for Ruapehu activities and reasonable price for the area, and clean sheets and towels (so I am giving it 2 stars). But very cramped unit, paper thin walls (can even hear people getting in/out of bed next door), not clean (food scraps/sticky mess on floor and in fridge, greasy dishes...) and not well maintained - mouldy curtains and bathroom ceiling/shower. This place needs a really good spring clean and some tlc. Nobody was on site to address concerns.

Stayed twice this season because of the awesome location. The view of the mountain from your bed is fantastic. Just across the road for a meal and mulled wine too. The spa was clean and the Manager very helpful with the local advice for the many cool things to do. Good to see the new flat screen TVs going in too. Hope to go back this summer for a Tongariro Crossing trek.

Wasn't expecting a 'posh' place as we got a good deal on Grabone - clean sheets, towels, lots of tea/coffee but no dishwashing liquid, paper towels and dishes were greasy eventhough I had requested to be cleaned prior to out visit(based on review).Would have been happy to take my own had we been informed. Dinner on 1st night was ruined as key for BBQ was not on the keyring as stated and took us a while to find the onsite emergency person. Good spa though.

Great location, good value for money, comfy bed & good view. Mary is super friendly and helpful! Perfectly located for access to nearby walks, including Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Taranaki Falls. Very close to mini mart, petrol station, and food outlets.

I read some of the reviews and noted the warnings, but thought, “ how bad can it be...?”
We arrived at 11:30 at night and there were easy instructions to gain access to unit 2. The room was tidy and clean.
The wall mounted fan heater was on and the room was warm. This was the only heating and went on and off all night due to the thermostat.
There were 3 bunk beds without any safety rails. One below and 2x really claustrophobialy close to the ceiling.
There was no side table or bedside light for the double bed, so it was either full lights or darkness.
The toilet roll holder was broken.
Paint pealing in the shower.
No heating in the cold bathroom.
Old carpet and old, very used sofa.
No wine glasses.
3 forks, even though there were 4 people staying.
The one star rating is for the friendly manager.
The walls are not very sound proof, so be ready to hear the neighbours.

Thanks for taking the time to send your review and sorry to hear about your disappointing experience, Alpine chalets is an older building so we do try and make up for it with a cheery welcome and high standard of cleanliness. Going forward we have a comprehensive programme of upgrades booked and ready to go, starting with turning the wifi up to 11 and smart TV's throughout, replacing the furniture and carpets, re-doing the bathrooms and removing 2 of the bunk beds as well as re-opening the secure drying room. We hope you can give us another try in the future.

Room was great, sparkling clean , lovely comfortable bed beautifully made up. Excellent communication from the chalet manager. Katy goes above and beyond for the clientele here, nothing is too much trouble for her to sort out at any time . Top notch service.
