Nestled in the Derwent Valley, at the foot of Tasmania’s Central Highlands, is our lush, green, tranquil ‘Hamlet Town’ of Fentonbury and at its heart you will find the serene and picturesque Hamlet Downs Country Accommodation – Host’s Steve and Trish WELCOME YOU to come and stay, and escape, relax and rejuvenate. With 3 accommodation options and all the facilities you need, you can choose the private, peaceful farm stay experience, or if you prefer, an action-packed interactive stay filled with activities, including cooking classes, winery tours and whatever else you would like us to organise. At Hamlet Downs Country Accommodation we offer an à la carte breakfast and inhouse signature dining options. Trish is passionate about food and draws from a wealth of experience in the food and beverage industry with two award winning food businesses – The Bear and the Ladle Gourmet condiments and Burma In Ya Belly – to her credit, so you can be assured the menu will be diverse, tasty and delicious! Of course, with both businesses proud to hold the Slow Food Convivium’s “Snail of Approval”, it goes without saying that ethically produced local farm produce will be at the heart of the Hamlet Downs food journey, standing by the ethos of good, clean and fair. We can even arrange a ‘hands on’ traditional Burmese Cooking Class for small groups and end the day by dining on your own class creations. Or maybe enjoy a fresh pasta making workshop with Steve – In the warmer months and if you’re a fun crowd we might even invite you to a karaoke sing along by the fireplace outside, if that takes your fancy. If relaxing and just be-ing is your thing, why not spend the day exploring Hamlet Downs’ 36 acres of serenity, say hello to our resident Alpacas -Vinnie, Epstein and Arnold, enjoy watching the pigs and chooks potter and dig about, and let us know if you see any ducks eggs so we can whip up some duck egg pasta or you see if you can spot our local platypus in the dam. There are so many amazing experiences at your fingertips, the hardest thing will be deciding what to do! Visit The Raspberry Farm at Westerway, enjoy a wine at Meadowbank Winery, defnitely head to The National Park Hotel as the live music, food and welcoming country hospitality will top off your visit, wonder about and enjoy the scenery at Lake Pedder, hike Mt. Field National Park’s multitude of walks, visit the Hop Fields or Salmon Ponds, or if angling is your thing, discover why the Tasmanian Central Highlands is considered one of the world’s premium trout fishing destinations. Additionally, just 30 minutes away is the historical town of New Norfolk where you can enjoy the Saturday markets and indulge in hours of antique shop fossicking, finding a treasure trove of trinkets and bric-a-brac to take home as a reminder of your wonderful Tasmanian escape. All this and more, just a short 1¼ hour drive from Hobart Airport or 2¼ hour drive from Launceston Airport. Our hamlet paradise awaits! Hamlet Downs Country Accommodation is located on 14 hectares of beautiful gardens, fields and ponds. Comprising of a circa 1800's cottage and modern extensions, Hamlet Downs provides private suites or self-contained options for guests with varying requirements. We are located just 10 minutes drive to Mount Field National Park and near the World Heritage South West Wilderness around Lakes Pedder and Gordon. We are a great stop over between Strahan and Hobart. Hobart is just 1 hour away so use us as a base for your adventures to that beautiful city and the nearby Central Highlands around Lake St Clair, Bothwell and New Norfolk. Each suite has its own entrance, lounge/dining area, bathroom, patio and some have a kitchen/kitchenette. We also offer delicious breakfasts and dinners from light meals to 3 course a la carte feasts. Hamlet Downs is accredited by the Tasmanian and national government accreditation programs which provides comfort in knowing that we provide quality and affordable accommodation. Detailed Reviews
In an effort to support Tasmanian businesses I had an excellent 2 night stay at this charming property which is well set up and offers absolutely delicious meals. As it is in a rural setting, the meals availability is well worth taking up as the chef is excellent. Being a rural property one has all the home comforts required but additionally an opportunity to walk around the dams on the property and if lucky see a platypus - I wasn't lucky but had a great walk and can well see where a platypus may happily live. Comfortable and clean, friendly host and great meals, what more could anyone want?

This lovely country style accommodation is located on a working farm which is currently producing prize-winning pork products. We enjoyed Steve’s tour of the property, interactions with the stock, and the wonderful views. Our unit was self-contained, comfortable and private, and I definitely recommend you order some of Trish’s fabulous and well-priced gourmet meals, which are among the very best in Tasmania! Trish and Steve’s warm, friendly hospitality made our stay a pleasure. Hamlet Downs is an excellent base for Mount Field National Park (Russell Falls) and the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area (if you’re up for a drive with lots of potholes).

We recently stayed at Hamlet Downs, run by Steve and Trish, who took over about a year ago. We chose this place because we wanted to hike the Tarn Shelf Circuit at Mt Field and this was really conveniently located for that. We also loved that they offered breakfast and dinner - what a luxury at the end of a long day hiking to have a hot meal delivered to your door! Our daughter loved seeing the farm animals - pigs, piglets, sheep and alpacas, it was her favourite part of the stay. We are a family of five so had the 2 bedroom suite with a fold-up bed for the 3rd child. Ot was comfy and warm. Highly recommend!

Hamlet Downs has the most relaxing and comfortable accommodation. Whilst ensuring the heritage of nearly 100yrs survives there were modern luxuries as well. Our hosts Steve & Trish were extremely knowledgeable about Tasmania and went over & above when with the best meals we’ve had in years!! Make sure you book for the meals!! and ask to help Steve with feeding the animals. 10 out of 10!! Definitely will return!

Wow what a great stay we had . This place is amazing . Very lovely hosts d hostess . They cool the meals and I thought for sure it came from a 5 star restaurant. What an experience . No noises close by , dark curtained rooms so a sleep in is automatic . Wouldn’t have Evan known other rooms were occupied . Farm walks and a visit up the hill for a lookout with animals nearby . Back to the food a taste sensation , we didn’t need to dine else where . We will definitely be back annually. Other than a night out at “ the old bush Inn” and the “National park Hotel “ your stay will be worth a weekend stay away from your regular life as your touring Tasmania

You can't get a more beautiful location for a B&B. Set amongst the green hills with glorious gardens we enjoyed visiting the ducks and pigs and Llamas and experiencing the wonderful tranquility of the place. Trish and Steve took very good care of us and the food was AMAZING!!! Trish is a brilliant cook and, whilst we were in a room where we could have provided for ourselves, we are very glad we had Trish cook dinner for us as well as breakfast. Thank you!

Looking for a special birthday treat, not far from our home in Hobart, we headed to this delightful farm stay near Mt Field National Park. Trish and Steve welcomed us, with a Burmese feast that will no doubt soon be part of the gourmet travel itinerary, drawing on Trish’s heritage and using their farm produce with homemade spicy condiments to die for! After walks to visit the pigs, then off to the snowy Mt Field tracks we headed back to our cosy and spacious King Suite, with more scrumptious food and friendly but not intrusive service. So glad Trish and Steve have made Tasmania home, would love to return with friends and family.

We originally booked to stay at Hamlet Downs but with Covid we had to cancel. When we tried to rebook there was no vacancy. We had planned to have dinner there as there are limited options in the area. The hostess, Trish went out of her way to allow us to still dine there even though we were staying elsewhere. We dined there 2 nights, the meals were fantastic and Trish's partner Steve was the perfect host, even taking us before dinner on a tour of the farm in his buggy.

A very nice place to stay with excellent hosts. Very handy place to stay to explore Mount Field NP. The room was cosy and the pre-ordered meal was great. Breakfast provisions were good. We also ordered a cheese platter which was very nice and had lots of home made goodies on it. There B&B is on a large property which you can explore and it had lovely gardens.

What a treat! Staying at Hamlet Downs wasn’t just a ‘stay’, it was an ‘experience’. From the moment you arrive you feel like you’re at a home away from home. Highlights included (but not limited to) the afternoon farm ride to feed the pigs, afternoon drink from the top of the hill, and hands down the best 3 course dining experience in the comfort of your own room. Will most definitely be back to try the infamous lamb shanks :)
