First of all the location: Shimei Bay is a wonderful place to spend a quiet and relaxing vacation. The public beach with very fine and clean sand is simply beautiful. You can walk along the beach at low tide for 6 kms and will only meet very few people. Towards the north there is a viewpoint on the cliff where you can watch gorgeous sunsets from. Towards the south there is a very nice bookstore right on the beach where you can have a cup of coffee or tea. Right next to it is a food truck that serves excellent burgers. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. There is also a surfing school, but all very quiet and clean. This place definitely has a Western feel - not a budget or hip place like Ri Yue Bay, but more upscale. There is even a Pacific Coffee place near the hotel!
The hotel itself is also perfect. Our room (garden view) was very spacious, new and clean. There was also a little private pool, but we didn’t use it. The bed and linen were extremely comfortable, and we appreciated the two comfortable chaise longue. The only downside was that we didn’t have a bath tub.
Breakfast was the best we ever had on Hainan – very fresh, a huge variety of Western and Chinese food. We loved the bread, yoghurt and banana smoothies – all homemade! We didn’t have dinner at the hotel, but the restaurants were all open – at some other resorts the Western ones were closed at this time of the year. There is a Korean one, a Western one and the lovely Horizon restaurant at the beach that offered Asian dinner or afternoon tea. It was a pity it did not function as a bar where you can just have a drink and a snack. There is a bar, though – without a view – that offers very good cocktail deals – do try the Hainan Passion with a passion fruit floating in it – simply delicious!
The service was good, but not many people speak English. You will, however, always find somebody very helpful at the reception or the bar who speaks English.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Overall I would rate Le Meridien Shimei Bay Beach Resort & Spa for 5-.

The hotel had some history. But after renovation in recent years, the room was new and had a very big flat TV. The room we stayed was apparently for family, but it was more like a normal room with two queen size beds, so the room was a little bit cramped for a family.

Both buffet breakfast and dinner were five star hotel standard. However it was a little bit chaos and I was not sure what waiters/waitresses were busy doing.

The reason I rated the hotel for 5- while not 4+ was that the resort organized different activities everyday to make guests' stay more happy and the front desk staff were keen to help. I would like to thank Stephen for his warm help during our stay.

The stuff overall are friendly specially Dale from the concierge, we had an upgrade and late check out. The room we had is good with private mini pool. The hotel itself was nice, the beach is large with nice sand only some beach chair need to be repair or change. We enjoyed the pool and the bar. Planning to comeback again when the weather is good.

I am a big fat Korean food lover. This is the only Korean restaurant that doesn't serve any side dishes. The food is so bad. We ordered bibimbap and bbq beef tongue and the bbq came in a plate with three lettuce leaves, 4 slices of sweet pepper and 4 slices of garlic.

the hardware may be aging, but the activities make up for it.
atmosphere is more laid back than other Sanya resorts: barbecue dinner on the beach, pit fire, live music, surf, many beach sport activities..
resort was packed with families and you feel that kids are busy and happy.

Just what we needed after a long time couped up at home during covid19. Things were just reopening so not so many people and great rates which was fantastic. The villa was fantastic, pool was lovely. There were plenty of activities for the kids and we arranged surfing lessons for our daughter. She's now hooked. Already recommended to friends. But far away from main sanya area but that's the attraction. Renting cars and driving yourself is becoming much easier now

From the arrival to the departure we experienced a wonderful stay. Beautiful white sand beaches, lagoon pool and scrumptious choices of food. I highly recommend the rooms whith private pool and a visit to the Horizon restaurant. There are a lot of activities for families, a complete gym and live entertainment. We will repeat again soon!

The grounds are very nice and the beach is lovely and private. Quite a few staff speak very good English which is nice and welcoming; many properties, including very luxurious 5-star hotels have difficulty with good English staff.

So why wait?

1) Villa development construction across the street... 8am the pile drivers are being used and the noise is DEAFENING... not the way you want to wake up with pounding noise in your head.

2) I'd call before you make the reservation... when we went there, the kids outdoor play was being painted, the tennis courts were being renovated, etc. This hotel is so far out, you come to just be at the resort and use the facilities... not so fun when you don't have the facilities to use.

3) You get tired of eating the same food if you are there a long time, not much around and the town of Wanning is 20 km away.

4) Musty smell in the rooms as others noted... why is that.

5) No service... NEVER were there towels on the towel stand at the pool or beach. I always had to walk quite a bit to find it. Why not have a service phone if you are not going to have an attendant? There is an emergency phone, why not a service phone. So if you are at the pools/beach and want a drink, food, towel, etc... prepare to walk to get it yourself.

RE: Kids

there is a kids club which is fine, but the property is not set up for younger kids

a) not many ramps... we always had to lift the stroller several steps in many, many locations, such as the pool area (many mini bridges), from our hotel building elevator to the walking path (no ramp, 5 steps), in the common areas, to the beach, etc. So not ideal for those in a wheelchair either.

b) they offer complimentary bikes for use, which would have been fun... but no bike is offered with a baby/toddler seat on it. So, we couldn't use this "free" activity.

c) high chairs are not the most secure

Overall I think its a nice property, but not for us as a family with young kids and not for very long stays (more than 3-4 days) as you grow weary of the food choices. I'm sure in a few years it will rival Yalong Bay as Hainan Island keeps growing!!

We chose this resort for the fact that it was a bit out of the way which meant it would have been a nice oasis away from the crowds in downtown Sanya.

The management and customer services team really try to put their best foot forward. We were a group of 14 adults and 13 children with advance notice to the customer service/management but yet, the property still managed to place us all in rooms without properly working air conditioning. We spent half a few hours moving to another room with free upgrades and private pools but the air conditioning units didn't work in those rooms either. The housekeeping would provide only the bare minimum bottles of water and didn't clean the floor but rather only swept it with a broom.

If you have to stay at this property, make sure you get a room with working air conditioning (not quite sure if there are any). We took up 7 different rooms and none of us had a decent working cool room. Our friend wasn't able to sleep the three nights and also came down with a fever from the lack of sleep and overheating.

The outdoor pools were wonderful and the staff were friendly and tried. If you plan to eat by the pool, you should order a half an hour or so before your hungry as the service is VERY slow.

The management tried several ways to make up for the lack of service/problems by giving us free breakfast, upgrading our rooms with private pools, giving small gifts such as the Hero 6 candies and Easter candies as well as setting up a buffet our last night because we complained about the wait for food for our children the first three nights before they worked out how to manage a more efficient way to serve our group.

It would've been a much better holiday had we known the property was in a state. It's just not set up to handle many people due to the structure of the property, there's no kitchen in the lower restaurant and the staff were blamed for the slow kitchen services. I believe there may only be one kitchen where the food is made and so getting the food to the various restaurants takes a long time.

The Le Meridien Shimei Bay is a nice hotel, but not really a five star (or 4.5 star) property, as it is quite comfortable and good quality but a little rough around the edges.

PROS:
- amazing beach, which extends for miles and is great for walking or running (though there was a big pile of rubbish at a fence directly next to the hotel section of the beach, clearly visible)
- lovely pools (both a lap pool and a pool for lounging around)
- nice beachfront restaurant with friendly wait staff
- good gym
- nice, big hotel rooms
- secluded location, with a generally quiet feel

CONS:
- breakfast was disappointing, with conventional western items either cold or of low quality. Even basic stuff like the toaster was not working properly. Breakfast was also often busy, but as a consequence, the staff seemed to struggle to replenish key items (orange juice, etc)
- rooms had mold in the bathrooms, and ACs you could not adjust
- construction on all sides of the hotel (though you could not hear this from the rooms or the main part of the hotel)

Overall, the hotel was very good, but not up to a five star (or 4.5 star) standard. It was nevertheless a lovely break and we would recommend this hotel, but just keep the above points in mind.

The hotel have shuttle bus from Sanya airport to the hotel, if you have many luggage, it will be better for you to choose Sanya to fly into. I think in September.... every part in China will be very hot, but it would not be rainy season, so you can enjoy surfing and the private pool~
