Detailed Reviews
I have been staying in Wanaka for Eight Years and the straight line that runs through the experience is the traffic and attendent consequences grows ever year.
This makes Alpine View Lodge on the edge of town on a no through road especially attractive.
The original owners left a legacy of well equipped Wooden Cabins with everything you could practically need. Air source units to keep you warm or cool depending on the season.
I stayed in Aspiring the self contained cabin which has a fully servicable kitchen with all the modern utilities which enabled me to cook all my meals whilst staying in Wanaka.
The hosts hail from Shanghai and offer their own unqiue brand of hospitality based on curteousness, mutual respect and a desire to please. Cheney is fastidous in maintaining the properties and Mavis and her husband continue to prime the properties for peoples arrivals. Your key point of contact is Melianni who is as sharp as a tack and takes seriously any request or special need one may have. As a tramper I know of only one set of hosts who could add value to my existing knowledge and thats because they are trampers ! Whereas Melianni has familarised herself with all the usual activities involvling planes/choppers and four wheel drive packages whihc abound in the area.
Next year will be my third visit with them and I very much looking forward to sharing the beautiful space that is Alpine View Lidge.

Stayed 11-15 July 2016 in Aspiring self-contained 2-bed unit, 2 adults and a teenager. The accommodation was well-equipped, spacious and warm (especially with the woodburner lit), as was the welcome from our hosts, Coco the cat, and the friendly sheep - Carpet, Yoda, Molly, and Jack! The spa was a real bonus at the end of a long day's skiing and the Alpine (but not lake) views are wonderful. Access to a ski locker and mountain bikes (with helmets) was also welcome and indicative of the care Craig and Michele take of their guests. You would not walk to town from here, but you are assured of peace and quiet. If you have teenagers/younger folks, may be worth noting that the WiFi though free is not unlimited and there is no Sky - but that is a minor quibble about an exceptionally pleasant place to stay. You can always play with the large assortment of board games, watch one of the DVDs freely available from the office, or simply enjoy the views. Thoroughly recommended.

There hasn’t been much recent reviews for this place so I’d just provide a bit of recent insight for anyone looking for reviews after change of ownership. I can see from older reviews that the previous owners were probably very charming and friendly and cooked good breakfast. When we visited in August we found out that there have been new owners since end of 2018. There are a few notable differences eg there is no breakfast for the time being (though it was stated clearly on the booking information page), and I think probably the new owners have a less outgoing personality and the fact that they are not local kiwis and while they are helpful and responsive, may not feel like they are in a position to offer as much advice and tips.
However the rooms (at least the self contained unit we stayed at) seem just as well maintained and inherited all the great features and appliances, including a fully functional kitchen, washer/dryers, heaters / air conditioners in every room, and even board games. There were some minor hiccups during our stay of 9 nights but the owners were communicative and responsive. Our kids also enjoyed feeding the sheep (the owners gave them some sheep feed). There was some unfortunate hiccups with their booking portal, charging some customers prematurely / double charging, but the owners were quick to rectify the issues and made also made additional refunds to ensure that no customer were shortchanged due to forex / bank transaction costs.
Location is about 5 minutes drive from Wanaka town centre so it is good if you have a car. The upside is that it is very quiet and peaceful. At the time when we made the booking, there was a 10% discount for longer term stay (I think it was for more than 5 nights stay) making it great value for our family of 4 to stay at the self contained unit compared to options within walking distance of town centre.
Overall I recommend this place if the prices are right and if you have a car.
My only issue is that the additional charges of 3% for using a visa card for payment was not stated on the website / in booking information page. Although I understand that it is not an uncommon practice for small businesses in New Zealand to pass own credit card processing fees to customers, it should be stated transparently and clearly including the amount for each type of card (visa / master / amex) to enable customers to make a better informed decision.

This property was not what we expected and is not worth the price paid. After trying to contact the owner/reception multiple times via phone, message and visiting the reception at check-in, we made the difficult decision to stay else due the accomodation being poor and disappointing. The owner is not pleasant or understanding to deal with once we finally got a response from them (after booking somewhere else - 2.5 hours after check-in). Driving into the property, you first see a shed/storage area full of clutter (as per photo). Walking into the room (Cardrona split level studio), the first thing we saw was a rusty old air con sitting outside (as per photo). There was also green electrical tape covering a switch (as per photo). The shower head was held up with hair tie. We are deeply disappointed by this accomodation. We would not recommend it to anyone wishing for an ‘alphine view’ stay.

Response from View Alpine, 业主 at Alpine View Lodge
Responded 24 Nov 2024
The guest booked room through Booking.com but requested a full refund on the day of check-in, which is against our refund policy. We reported this situation to Booking.com, and after a review, booking customer service team also did not accept the guest's refund request. After being unable to obtain a refund, the guest left a retaliatory low rating. That day workers were dismantling old air conditioning units from other buildings and planned to move them after their lunch break. The taped-up switch was simply for an unused outdoor light. The guest even went as far as taking photos of our storage room, which is completely unrelated to their stay. As a 4-acre lifestyle property, there are many areas, such as our sheep pen, that guests can photograph if they choose. Linking these unrelated spaces to their accommodation is utterly absurd. To be fair, we are a small business that has been operating in Wanaka for over 10 years. We welcome all feedback and opinions from our guests, but we hope that this guest refrains from engaging in such malicious behavior that harms other business owners. After all, a 1-star review is also a reflection of one’s own character.

Our recent stay at Alpine View Lodge in Wanaka was a mixed experience. The location, nestled on the edge of Wanaka, offered both convenience and tranquillity. The lodge sits on a nice property, surrounded by stunning mountain views.
Unfortunately, the fireplace in our cottage didn't work, which was disappointing. Whilst this may not be an issue during summer, it made for a cold stay during winter as the single air-conditioner took a long time to warm the cottage.
For the price, compared to other similar properties, we felt the furnishings were on the budget end, which whilst practical, was disappointing.
The Alpine View Lodge offers a peaceful retreat with a few drawbacks. If you're looking for a quiet escape in Wanaka, it's worth considering, but be prepared for some minor inconveniences.

Lovely setting, awesome house with spa ..... But the behaviour of the owner was very off putting, I deal with rude people but never has a reception like it. I was very glad not to be staying there with such an aggressive male who's approach to females was disgusting. Never recommend to anyone after this.

Thank you for your review, yes, we do live in an awesome setting. As always there are two sides to every story. You arrived very late at night with a group of friends, two of whom were staying with us. Not only did you wake us up, you also woke our other guests with all the noise you were making and this is always a concern of ours, as our guests comfort is our priority, something you obviously had no respect for. Our first concern is always for our guests who are staying with us. We work very hard to provide a pleasant and memorable stay for them and as you can see from our other reviews, your comments couldn't be further from the truth. As you said in your review you did not stay here, that we are thankful for. Reviews like yours can hurt a small business like ours, but I am sure we will take it in our stride and move on.

We stayed at this lodge in early February 2015 in the Minaret room. The room was beautiful, large and spotless. The bathroom was spotless as well andthe shower was great. The owners,Craig and Michele, make you feel that your comfort is their only concern and they are truly the nicest of people. The breakfast was delicious and well prepared. We cannot say enough good things about this place. We recommend it to everyone who travels to Wanaka which is one of the prettiest places in New Zealand and not to be missed.

Super clean and modern! Michelle and Craig were very friendly and helpful hosts. Our interactions with them added to the already perfect stay. Excellent location...5-10 drive into center of town/lake but with a remote feeling due to the pristine vast natural surroundings around the home (see the attached pics). The breakfast was delicious and the views from the dining room were spectacular. The room was well stocked with high quality tea, coffee and even spa level bathroom product. We were very happy with our stay and will recommend this to anyone looking for a place to stay in Wanaka.

My husband and I were so excited to visit Wanaka on our honeymoon, and while this B&B is beautiful and located within a 5 minute drive to downtown Wanaka, we would not recommend visiting in the off season when the owners are not there. The cottages themselves are very nice, but the heat wasn't turned on when we arrived, our coffee was not refilled after we used it the first morning, and the breakfasts are not worth it. It is also a drive into town, which was expected, but next time we would likely stay closer within walking distance.

We had two king size rooms and both were spacious, comfortable, modern. The bathrooms were nice and so was the one living room. The owners made breakfast in the morning and you sat there with other guests and it felt like a family breakfast .... to order. Craig provided me with beer so I would not have to go out shopping. We brought our own smoked salmon from the trip and their 3 legged Siamese cat was waiting at the car as we arrived. (Good smeller). Beautiful large property. One could easily spend a few days days here. Highly recommended.

yes it is - but it depends where you want to ski. It's about a 40 minutes drive to ski fields
Hi Michele,
I am a travel agent who is planning a trip but it's not until 2016. The clients have a month in NZ but are very particular so it is all about detail. Your place looked perfect but it would need 2 bathrooms. Thank you for your quick response.
