Detailed Reviews
I stayed at Wanaka Hotel with my husband and baby and had a really lovely time. We stayed in a lake facing studio on the first floor which was pretty modern and comfortable. The staff went the extra mile to accommodate us and our baby and this was very much appreciated. The hotel doesn’t have a lift so for rooms on the first floor you can to carry your own luggage. A kitchen and laundry is available for guests. The café and restaurant on site make it great for a quick bite to eat without leaving the premises, but on a Friday/Saturday night it can get a bit loud. The hotel is in a great location to access all the town’s attractions and eateries. Won’t hesitate to stay here again.

I stayed in a studio room. It was on the small side, especially the bathroom, but more than adequate for a one night business trip. An HDMI connection was available to connect to the TV. Free wifi was available and the speed was good enough to stream Netflix.
The hotel has a good location in the centre of town, 2-3 mins walk from the the waterfront.
The water pressure in the bathroom was low however, don't expect an epic shower.
Didn't try the cafe or restaurant... there were better options elsewhere for our group.
For the price, it was pretty good value.

This was our only hotel of the trip & honestly we preferred the motels we stayed at. Best stuff – great location – close walking distance to the lake and lots of restaurants & shops, I-site was just down on the corner, 3 washers/4 dryers, a separate guest kitchen that was well stocked, just across the street from Erik’s Fish. They had a parking lot for guests to use. The Mexican restaurant that was in the hotel had excellent food. There was a nice garden w/ picnic tables where we ate our order from Erik's Fish.
Not so good – smallest bathroom and smallest shower yet. Shower was really tiny, almost like a camper shower. The bathroom door creaked loudly every time it was moved. The dryers left black streaks on some of our clothes and there was construction right outside our rooms that started at 6:30 am. No elevator, so had to carry heavy bags up steps.

We spent 2 nights at the hotel on a mini break. Although an older building the room was comfortable clean and tidy and the bathroom was new. We didn't realise when we booked that there is a full service kitchen for the guests use. We ate dinner outside on the lawn under the shade of the majestic old trees and we had a taco lunch at Amigos restaurant which is attached to the hotel. We had an upstairs room with views overlooking the main street and the lake. The hotel is located at the entrance to Wanaka and is a very easy stroll to the restaurants, bars, shopping and the lake. Would we stay there again, yes definitely.

+1
We stayed overnight after driving down from Cardona. The driveway entrance is shared with the pub and there were a few spots where you could park on the driveway to check into the hotel. Check-in was easy since I had done an online booking. We did have to go back out to the main road to circle back to the parking lot behind the building. The parking lot was fairly large but the area labelled for the hotel was full so we went to the other side hoping the ticket we had was good for it.
There is access to the hotel from the carpark so you didn't have to walk all the way to the front. If you were heading upstairs there is also a set of doors by the parking lot to make the traverse shorter.
The rooms were quite clean and the view of the lake from the balcony was nice. The beds were comfortable and there were toiletries available. It was decently sized with an area for luggage so it wasn't in the way around the beds. The room had a fridge as well as a kettle. There were laundry facilities available for guest use as well for a price.
It was in a great location quite close to town and the lake. There was also a cafe (Scroggin), restaurant (Amigos) and bar (Bullock Bar) beside the hotel if you didn't want to go too far. there was also a kitchen by the parking lot but it was separate from the hotel through some covered pathways.
Although it was a bit bothersome having to lug baggage upstairs, the room was nicely sized and was quite comfortable with a decent WiFi signal. Check-in and out were quite easy. The parking was a bit full and it was only one way so it required a bit of a detour to get back onto the main road. Otherwise, the stay was quite nice with beautiful views and a nice stay in Wanaka.

Definitely the worst experience in a recent 13 day holiday in south Otago.
Grossly overpriced at $154 for a room so small only one person could use the bathroom. The receptionist was eighty if a day and only worked part time. No breakfast facilities whatsoever, and contracted out their dining area to a Mexican owner. Should be closed down immediately.

Stayed over Christmas, when most hotels don't check in or out guests (kudos to Wanaka Hotel for allowing check ins!). Hotel feels old and musty but otherwise, rooms are clean but small. Bathroom are tiny. Short walk to the lake and F&B street. We got a room facing the carpark/ walkway, so do make sure you request a room with lakeview. No elevators, so get a ground floor room if you're having numerous luggage. Communal kitchen and launderette provided as well.

The room we had was exceptional, we had the royal suite, which was amazing, with fabulous views of the lake. We felt very special as the previous 3 nights accommodation elsewhere was terrible and very expensive. Wanaka Hotel is a hidden gem and we highly recommend.

We recently stayed at the Wanaka Hotel, attracted by its central location which did not disappoint being so close to the lake and the centre of town.
However, our overall experience was marred by several discomforts. The hotel shows its age with a rather run-down appearance and old which could definitely use some modern upgrades. A minor, yet notable inconvenience was the provision of single ply toilet paper, of which there wasn't enough. The quality of toilet paper says a lot about a place. The bathroom was compact, to say the least, and while the heated mirror would be a thoughtful touch in winter, it made the room unbearably warm in the spring sunshine. The lack of a powerful shower further dampened our experience.
The absence of air conditioning was felt, especially during the sunny afternoon when our room turned into a sauna despite opening the windows and sliding door.
Parking was another challenge. It’s a game of luck to find a spot at times due to the pub . This could be quite inconvenient especially if you’re carrying a fair bit of luggage.
The combined effect of these issues unfortunately outweighed the benefits of the location. We have decided not to return to Wanaka Hotel for our future visits to the area.

The hotel in right in the middle of town. Although it's a little 'old style' our room was nicely renovated and warm and comfy and there are further renovations in progress. The staff were welcoming and helpful. One feature I thought was great is that the hotel has a guest kitchen where you could get plates and cutlery or wine glasses or cook a meal. And the cafe is fantastic.
