We cannot comment on the rooms here as we didn't stay, but it would have been good to try them out. We stayed down the road and found ourselves returning again and again rather than going into town. The Hotel is all it presents itself to be - historic, warm and friendly. The main bar area is a great place to get to know the locals and other visitors after a day on the slopes. There is a big lounge with a huge roaring fire, and of course the dining room. The place is busy but the service remains efficient and excellent. We spontaneously decided to stay at the Cardrona hotel on our way to Wanaka and had a great time. The room was very comfortable and the restaurant was cozy with great food. The staff was very friendly as was the hotel cat - Whiskers. The grounds were just starting to come into bloom and I can see why the hotel is often booked for weddings as the setting is comfortable, welcoming and cozy. We definitely recommend a stay here if you're in the area.

Firstly, I'll mention the excellent parts of this trip: the food in the hotel's restaurant is excellent (we had it every night and tried almost every dish on the menu). The ambience of the hotel is beautiful, with two open fires, and even an outdoor fireplace (and various fire braziers). The rooms are very clean and comfortable and have been done-up very recently. The only two problems we had all weekend was getting lost trying to find the reception when we arrived (there are no signs directing you there from the carpark, and it was pouring with rain so we got soaked trying to find it) and the squeaking door leading to our ensuite bathroom (it was rather loud, and I could tell that it wasn't just our room's door because I
