The Moorings has an excellent location with lake view (lake especially close, with minor flooding when we were there), and short walks to everything in town. The motel studio was comfortable, with full kitchen, modern bathroom, free parking and coin laundry on site.
With record rain on the West Coast (our next stop), there were landslides and bridges washed out so we couldn't get to Franz Joseph. We asked to stay an extra night at The Moorings and it was available, but around noon the next day a bridge opened up, so we were quickly on our way. The nice staff agreed to call it a late checkout and we weren't charged for the reserved extra night - very accommodating. In Wanaka, liked Ode Conscious Dining and Kika restaurants.

Great view of Wanaka, with deck and outdoor furniture.
The room is slightly dated but is very clean and a good size, comfy bed with everything you need.
The kitchenette is extremely well setup and stocked with everything you need to cook a meal. The best value for money accommodation we had in our South Island week away. Would definately stay again.

No complaints. Room is of high standard, clean, modern and detailed oriented. Can see owner's have put in a lot of efforts to make it perfect. Great location to park, lake and restaurants. Owner is super efficient, parking may be limited but can actually park on street till day of departure. Minor improvement could be milk provided in fridge and not have to ask for. Other than that, everything is perfect! Highly recommended!

We recently completed a family road trip around the South Island, staying at Maruia Springs, Franz Josef, Wanaka, and Hanmer.

Our longest stay of the trip was 7 nights spent in Wanaka at The Moorings. At $430 per night the two bedroom two bathroom apartment was by far the most expensive accommodation of our trip. It was intended as a special treat after our holiday last year was cancelled due to Covid.

The location was second to none but other than that it was disappointing and did not live up to expectations.

One day into our stay Sky TV stopped working and when the technician came to repair it we found it replaced with smart TV apps that relied on subscriber services and high speed Internet. There were two All Black tests and a State of Origin game on during our stay that we wanted to catch so we were required to subscribe to SkySportNow. We did this only to discover that the advertised ‘high speed internet’ was not capable of reliably streaming the service. All games were glitchy to the point of being unwatchable. This was mentioned to management on our departure and we were informed they were aware of the issue and that fibre was being installed soon. No compensation was offered.

Neither of the toilets flushed freely and required the user to flush up to three times after use. This was also mentioned on our departure.

We booked a two bedroom family apartment. The large upstairs master bedroom with the views and ensuite, and was locked off on our arrival, had been converted to a queen plus single so we had to put the kids in there and stay downstairs in the much smaller guest room. The downstairs bedroom door had to be left slightly ajar or it rattled in the jam every time someone walked around upstairs.

The downstairs bathroom had no lock on the door (which also would not close without slamming) and no facilities for sanitary products. My wife and both daughters had to resort to only using the upstairs ensuite bathroom. The bath was also in the downstairs bathroom, it would have been nice to be able to relax in the bath without worrying about someone accidentally walking in.

The dining table was so wonky that you could not cut your food on it if someone had a drink on the table without causing the drink to spill.

We had to go out and buy a carving knife, cheese knife, and tea strainer as none of these items were provided.

The outdoor Bbq area was lovely but the lighting was broken so at night you could not see what you were doing and the stairs were very dangerous.

The overall feel of the property was that it was a bit run down and badly setup. It was also very overpriced. We stayed in a beautiful two bedroom apartment in Hanmer that was bigger, more modern, better appointed, and only $285 per night.

I would not stay at The Moorings again as the price was in no way reflected in the quality of the accommodation. There are better options available at that price point, or even for cheaper.

Booked a room for three adults. Arrived at reception to be told it would an extra $30 for the extra person and paid without any problems. A rollaway bed was delivered to the room that seriously would have had trouble to swing a cat in. The bed was broken so was returned. The one that was replaced with was so uncomfortable the person who was sleeping in that ended up on the floor. The heat pump is noisy. The bathrooms need regrouting and the traffic noise is bad if you are in one of the front rooms. For $250 a night and a terrible night's sleep suggest you look elsewhere in Wanaka.

The guest booked a king bed studio - clearly advertised as having a maximum occupancy of 2 people. The studios are spacious for 2 but not for 3 adults. Unfortunately all our apartments were fully booked so we could not upgrade the guest to an apartment. We did our best but this guest was never going to be satisfied.

Stayed here for three nights. The location is fabulous, opposite the lake and very close to the town. The view out of your bedroom window is breathtaking.
The hosts were very helpful, we arrived early and they stored our luggage and transferred it to our room for us whilst we were hiking the mountains.
There is a guest laundry which is a great asset when you are travelling. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a stay in Wanaka.

Stayed for two nights during driving tour of S Island. Very nice clean rooms with a good balcony for overlooking the lake. Very good central location within easy walking distance of the town centre and many shops and restaurants. I would best describe the accommodation as medium grade with perfectly adequate amenities for a active traveller not likely to spend a lot of time in the room. There was a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities, a relatively compact bathroom with a climb in bath shower and fabric shower curtain. Good parking to the rear of the property. Good value for money.

Absolutely loved our motel room. Bright spacious and clean. It has a small kitchen area which is very handy. We also liked the fact that it has a sofa and TV situated next the the patio doors which have an amazing view of the lake. It is situated next to many restaurants and the shops. The motel is in a great location for hillwalking on the near by hills. I would highly recommend this motel I would definitely stay here again.

We had checked in late in the evening and entered a very hot and stuffy apartment. Turned on the a/c, but after an hour it had still not cooled down. Called up reception and were told to give it some time. Finally at 9 pm called up reception again and a very helpful night manager came to check out the problem and agreed it was very hot inside. He said nothing could be done at this time of the night but after I asked, we got small table fans for the 3 bedrooms. We opened the windows but sleeping was very difficult as the gentle breeze kept the blinds rattling against the window frame. Next morning we woke up with insect bites all over. Called the management to ask what was being done about the a/c and a very curt manager replied that it was going to be sorted out today. I told him that it was not a pleasant night and were bitten by mosquitoes too. I was very sternly told that there are no mosquitoes here. He is probably right as I could not see anything flying around and don't know what bit us at night but all three bedroom occupants had insect bites. He did not once ask us how we were nor did he apologize for the broken down a/c. A simple sorry would have helped. He could have been kinder and come round first thing in the morning to ask how we were and not wait for us to call him up. I understand that machines break down but he was so rude and not at all sorry that I would not recommend this place to any one.

Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear your experience at The Moorings did not meet you expectations. Unfortunately air conditioning equipment does fail from time to time. We were able to have it repaired the next day. Thanks also for your feedback on how our communication with you was poor. We seldom have guest complaints but clearly in this instance should have responded in a more professional manner.

Lovely clean modern facilities. Enough utensils and equipment provided to easily cook a meal ( there's even a slow cooker if you were going to be gone all day skiing). Great location to just walk everywhere.

The studio room we had did not have AC. It should be warm in Dec but not the hottest which is more like Jan/Feb. You should be fine.

No lifts that I'm aware of but if you emailed the Manager at the Moorings I'm sure he would be more than happy to answer any of your queries. The unit we stay in is at ground level but quite elevated so we get great views of the lake and the mountains.

Hi there, yes the units and apartments come with all kitchen things ie kettle, toaster, crockery, cutlery etc. Unfortunately we do not have a transfer facility from Queenstown. It is 1.5 hrs from Wanaka and Connect a bus company travels daily from Queenstown and Wanaka.
