Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This lodge really has so much potential, if it was a person i’d want to give it a hug. As a family of 5 we required 2 family rooms costing us $300 a night. I could probably look past the dated furnishings but it was hard to ignore the WHS concerns. This included but not limited to cracked toilet bowl, unemptied ashtrays, uneven deck timber, nails, poorly constructed clothesline, dirty bbq plate, brittle clothes pegs, split clothes baskets etc. One positive thing is the location being right in town, the downfall of this was being across from the Irish pub with it’s live music. I hope one day, this lodge is given a lot of love and attention to bring to life.

The location of this property was good, in the centre of Wanaka and a short walk to the lake. We were looking forward to staying in this beautiful area. Wanaka was fabulous but sadly the lodge wasn't. We had a double room which was not clean, very basic and dated. The bed and pillow were not comfortable and it was noisy. We stayed in some good backpacker lodges during our two month visit to New Zealand and this was not one of them.

Basic and adequate, nothing special. Furniture etc. is dated, would suggest checking the hostels before this motel. Location is good, with the center very close by. Price is a little high for the value.

The owner Karen has the worst customer service that I have ever come across within the hospitality industry and has no care for her paying guests. I was looking forward to staying at this accommodation but was appalled by the behaviour, demeaning manner and language that I was confronted with by the manager/owner when I was seeking assistance with my booking. Whilst seeking information I was confronted by a bullying and vile demeanour as well as having my citizenship mocked (I'm from the UK). I'm shocked and upset by the interaction I had with her and refuse to go back for the rest of my booking. This has put me off staying with small business that are run by local owners in the region.

Bedroom was not clean - the carpet had not been cleaned as there were old coffee beans on it. More importantly the safety bar on the top bunk bed was loose (no screws) and was a safety hazard. I mentioned this to the staff in the morning. They were not concerned about this. Kitchen area was not clean. Plates and utensils un-washed. Worst place I have stayed in the three weeks I have been travelling in New Zealand.

Stayed with 2 friends in bunk and queen bed. Okay sleeping area however communal kitchen stunk like old cooking oil and lounge area like a litter box. As a bonus reasonable ski storage and proximity to town.

Good things: Good location, bed was decently comfortable, good pillow. Fireplace in the common lounge was nice. Bad things: There was a mouse, saw him three times in my two-day stay, which made super paranoid about leaving my food in the kitchen. The oven and even the kettle weren't working, so everyone had to boil water on the stove to make tea and coffee. You get 1gb of wifi per night but it barely works. The shower pressure was way too strong (which is saying something coming from me) and the shower head couldn't be moved to avoid it spraying directly in my face. Freezing cold in the bathrooms and hallway.

Honestly I don’t know where to start. I’ve never ever experienced such a horrible hostel in my life. We had booked a private room for once and were super excited to enjoy a nice vacation in Wanaka. We had booked 5 nights so obviously the money we paid for this was a lot. And where did they put us? In a little shed filled with MICE🐭this should be illegal and during no circumstances is it ok to rent out rooms with MICE in them!! When we talked to the front desk person about it he said they “didn’t know and couldn’t move us to another room”. Then more and more guests came up to us and said it had been this way for MONTHS. I demanded they would fix this and their response was screaming “DO YOU WANT US TO KICK YOU OUT HUH?! YOU ARE MILKING THE SYSTEM!” How is it my fault that we had more than 5 mice running around in the kitchen and in our room? One of them even ate pieces of my raincoat!! The part of the story was that this was during Easter in NZ. All the hostels were booked so we couldn’t leave or we would be homeless. As soon as we could find any other place to stay, we moved out. Thanks for ruining my vacation and thanks for making me cry after yelling at me for an hour. You guys should not run a hostel and I’m going to report this.

We paid good money for a room with ensuite, not a room with mould on the curtains and windows and the occasional cockroach running around. Unfortunately there was no other accommodation available, so we stayed for 2 nights. If we had inspected the room first we wouldn't have stayed there. The kitchen was grubby, the toaster had died and hadn't been replaced. The Irish bar across the road is open until 2am on Saturday night so don't expect too much sleep. The people at reception were fine but the owners should be ashamed of the state of the premises. A good clean in the bathroom would do wonders. As a family its disappointing that NZ offers accommodation like this primarily to our oversea visitors. Just because people travel on a budget doesn't mean they need to be offered dirty places like this.

Matterhorn is a good hostel to stay at. The location is perfect, just a short walk from the lake and the showers were really good. Lounge area didn't feel too clean in comparison to the rooms. The staff at reception was brilliant and friendly, the cleaning staff not so much, which was weird, cause a lot of guests were long term guests there. But you could also find other backpackers which made the atmosphere okay again. They have good laundry facilities and again reception staff has great recommendations for you. I'd stay again.
