Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a completely average hostel. The house is kept very clean and has cozy common areas and a decent kitchen, though the water pressure and temperature in the showers was poor and the beds have very thin foam mattresses. An hour after checkout in the lounge I was aggressively approached by a man intensely staring at me repeating "what's your story?" over and over again. Getting the hint that I wasn't welcome to stay in the common areas I apologised, got up to leave immediately and said I had assumed it was ok as it's normal to be allowed to do so in hostels. I was then subjected to a barrage of insults as I was packing my bag, including yelling after me as I walked out the door that young people are the "most selfish generation ever". A somewhat surreal experience? After telling this story to a local I was told that the manager was known for being "weird". A shame as the other staff were nice.

We stayed here for 2 nights. It was well maintained and equipped. Close to the town and the lake. We had a double room with shared facilities. Supermarket was close by as was the parking. Free wifi. Lovely view from the kitchen.

Really enjoyed my stay here! Dorms were massive and clean. Shower was hot (any reviews stating otherwise are well outdated). Free working wifi. Hosts were friendly. Location was excellent, down a side street close to everything but perfectly quiet. Highly reccomend! - especially for Stray/Kiwi passengers wanting a quiet alternative to the reccomended hostel that’s within walking distance

As the title states we feel poor is a bit harsh considering that they was nothing awful about this place. Definitely felt like more of a home stay but a very expensive one. Our double room was clean and basic. No wifi for a highly priced hostel is not good enough. The bathrooms were fairly poor with not enough water pressure for a decent shower or to flush the toilet. I'm 6ft1 and the dirt you can see in my photo was eye level with me in the shower which is off putting. Could so better.

This hostel is located right in the centre of Wanaka. You can easily walk to all the main attractions: That Wanaka Tree, Adventure Watersports and the National Park (maybe drive for that one). You are right next to a supermarket and a strip of bars, shops and restaurants. Wanaka is quite a popular town for travellers, so generally the accommodation is a little bit more expensive. We found Holly's on a booking website as it was the cheapest place available, and since we were on a budget, we went ahead and booked it. Checking in was easy and we were given 24 hours of WiFi for free (which was pretty fast), plus the facilities were absolutely spotless. We went for a shared room but we were lucky to be the only people there. The other travellers all said hello and kept to themselves, which suits me just fine! The room had a heater, a place to air towels, coat hangers, and above all, a fantastic view of the mountains! The beds were pretty basic, but no different to the ones you get at university campuses. There were also plenty of board games and DVDs etc, plus a massive TV with decent channels. Location: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Atmosphere: 3/5 Comfort: 4/5

Adequate for the night. Best price and you get what you pay for. Our room was clean. Beds were worn, heater was broken but we were warm enough and slept okay. Kitchen was a mess from other users. We were right underneath the lounge and the tv was loud which made getting to sleep a bit difficult. Overall was fine for the night and handy to town and reasonably priced. Shower was hot and clean enough and staff very friendly which was nice.

Our double room was lovely! Big bed, sofa, mirror, hooks for hanging towels etc and close to bathrooms. The hostel was overall a bit cold but no problem as our room had a heater! Location is perfect, about 2 minute walk to the lake and main street. Staff were friendly and always around to ask any questions. Bathrooms were big and clean. The kitchen was average and guests often left it very messy. It was mostly quiet at night so slept well. There is Wi-Fi you can pay for but I didn't come all the way across the world to stare at my phone all day so don't know why people are complaining. I would recommend this hostel to friends!

We stayed in a double room downstairs. It was very cold and the heaters stopped after one hour. In one shower it was not possible to close the window. Also the beds weren't that good. The kitchen and the living room were quiet good and the owner was friendly.

Enthusiastic staff welcome you to Hollys backpackers, it's a small hostel and they take the time to remember your name and chat which is always nice! Facilities are dated but the hostel is a comfortable place to stay. Kitchen has everything you need, bathrooms, dorm rooms and lounge are spacious and there is a nice little garden area for when your feeling lazy but still want to enjoy the sunshine. Great hostel for my short stay in Wanaka :)
