The site itself is beautiful, right by the lake, but the stay was let down by some not great communication and issues with facilities.

We stayed for one night due to the campsite's proximity to the start of the Motatapu event (right next door). It's a good job we were attending the event and were up at 5am anyway because the event started playing loud music from around 7.15am which must have disturbed campers nearby - we only knew about the event because we were competing so it might be that other guests had no clue and were woken by this music.

It also meant the kitchen at the far end of the camp site had been taken over by race things such as signs and was unusable, which we weren't told about. We were a good five minute walk to the other kitchen (doesn't sound like much, but it is when it's cold and you have to carry all your things with you because there are no utensils etc in the kitchen!) so it was quite annoying to have the kitchen nearest us out of action.

The main kitchen is very clean and spacious but has nothing provided ie no pots and pans, so bring your own.

$1 for showers which is a bit cheeky and seems like a sneaky way to drive the price up on what initially seems like quite a good value for money booking.

Laundry was fine, $3 for a medium sized load.

Response from Glendhu B, Front Office Manager at Glendhu Bay Holiday Park
Responded 19 May 2020
Hi Hayley, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback. As you will know we are a very large campground (1.4 km). Campers not attending the Motatapu are placed at the opposite end of the camp to avoid any noise and anyone requesting to head down that end were duly warned of the 7 am set up time, although as in your case most of the campers closer to the event were competing. Campers are shown the map on arrival and told which facilities are closest to their campsite. Apologies if this was missed out in your case. We are very flexible with campers who would like to move sites. If you visit Glendhu in future and feel you are too far from facilities please pop in to the office as this is a very easy fix. We have kitchenware boxes available to borrow from reception, and signs in the kitchen that let campers know this. We have had to opt for this approach as too many items were being damaged and going missing from the kitchen. Regarding the showers - some campers who pass through are in self-contained campers or only staying a night and therefore do not use the showers. Instead of putting camp fees up for everyone we charge $1 for 6 minutes which covers the gas used for the showers. Hopefully you will be able to make it out to Glendhu again and experience how peaceful the camp is without a major event taking place Thanks, GBMC

We stayed at the Glendhu Bay Motor Camp several times during our stay in Wanaka in March and found that the facilities were kept very clean and that the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. When the country announced its lockdown, we returned to the camp to spend the following two months. The management was exceptional: always keeping on top of everything, making sure we got the latest updates and keeping the park running to their usual high standards while maintaining extra measures for sanitization. We were especially impressed with the efforts of the management and staff to help us out in any reasonable way, from lending us loaf bans to make bread and a duvet when the nights got colder to offering a grocery pick-up service during the lockdown.

Thank you Pene, Phil, and the rest of the team at Glendhu Bay!

My husband and I stayed here for the first time over Easter weekend and we’re so glad we did. It’s a gorgeous lakeside location with great facilities. The kitchen is modern with all the facilities you need plus the bathrooms are kept very tidy considering how many people are using it. You’ll need a $1 coin to operate the showers but they are warm and go for longer than you’d expect.

It’s less than a 10 minute drive into Wanaka and is a great spot for water sports as well as getting to the Mt Aspiring National Park. One caution is if you’re tenting to ensure your lines are secure as the wind, when it gets stronger, comes across the lake quite forcefully. No damage to our tent but it was quite a strong wind. 100% worth it though for the views!!

Whilst travelling around the South Island we become involved in the Covid 19 Lockdown situation. We were in Wanaka and had to find somewhere quickly to stay and Glendhu Bay Motor Camp was on the list of who were taking in campervans so that's where we headed. The site is on the edge of Lake Wanaka and it's absolutely stunning. It's surrounded by hills and mountains. The site is being modernised and the area near reception has a new shower block, kitchen area, communal room and laundry. There are 8 new cabins which consist of a king size bed and bunk beds. There's a very effective electric heater for when it gets cold. The campsite itself is quite large but there are dotted around it blocks of showers, toilets, laundry and kitchen areas, which are an older style but are nice and clean. Pene and Phil are the site managers and they along with the rest of the staff are friendly and helpful. We arrived on 24 March and it was getting cold and our van had no heating. Pene got us a heater and some extra sleeping bags so we wouldn't get cold. Altogether we were on the site for 6 weeks and everyone who worked at the site helped make what could have been a horrible experience a very pleasant one and one which we will never forget. We will be coming back!!

The camp site and its location cannot be faulted! They are well kept, on the beach and a short drive away from Wanaka. The buzz and vibe from people staying there was nice to be a part of and it was a fantastic time. The reception ladies are super helpful and friendly.

However the grounds ranger working around the curfew was unbelievably rude and sexist, and if he can’t speak to people with any sort of decency he really doesn’t have to be doing that job. Upon returning to camp from a full day and evening of activities, and needing to eat (past 11pm quiet curfew) him and his assistant came over, stated that they’d already spoken to us, told us to be honest, the women are the worst and that our laughter wasn’t aloud.

Glendhu Bay Campground is a fantastic Council Owned Facility which we have enjoyed camping at every January for the past 12 odd years. We consider ourselves as respectful campers who have never had any issue or caused any issues with past Management at the campground. Unfortunately, January 2022 was to be our last after a confronting and abusive attack by the Manager, on our campsite the day after our arrival who alledged we had been unspectful and abusive towards staff in the office. This was an inflated and totally untrue story after we had simply queried mask wearing protocols given the country was in an alert level that required all front facing staff and guests to wear masks. The exact details surrounding the situation are too lengthy to write here but we are not the only ones who have experienced this behavior from the Manager having heard similar other experiences of long term guests. Regardless of what the circumstances many have been, the threat of cancelling your rollover booking is real and we have heard of others who has received this treatment.

We took the matter further with Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) who own the facility and whilst they were understanding of the situation could not act on it as the day-to-day operations are leased to another company (CCR) whom our complaint was forwarded to by the Council. We had correspondence with one of the CCR board members and initially brushed off until we pushed our case further and were listened to a little more. Obviously, our chances of returning for January 2023 following this situation was not going to happen but we wanted to make sure this was not going to happen to other innocent, decent and respectful campers.

More recently a newsletter has been sent out to campers and contains a line which directly uses our experience as a warning / threat to future campers. Not only do we feel personally attacked by this statement but it goes to show the threating behavior continues and the same attitude remains before the busy Christmas and New Year period has begun! We have remained silent until now but threats such as the line in the recent newsletter is the last straw!

Our message – be very aware of any situation that may arise from confrontation from Campground Management. Promises made by the director were that
1. The Male Manager will wear a body camera and
2. will be accompanied by another staff member when he needs to discuss a matter with campers
3. The Office cameras would be operational at all times.

If you experience a situation such as this you should contact CCR Operations on ccrheadoffice@gmail.com and copy QLDC services@qldc.govt.nz

We fully expect that Management will comment here that the above is contrary to their story and that we were abusive to their staff (this couldn't be further from the truth) but we know what happened and this shouldn’t be aloud to happen to others.

Being a council owned facility fair treatment of campers, clear structures and transparent processes should be paramount.

We were in Wanaka when the lockdown started and decided to stay at the Glendhu Bay Motor Camp and we don't think there could have been a better place!

The campsite itself is really beautiful sitting at Lake Wanaka which sometimes even mirrors the mountains when there is no wind. Sometimes there were even some small visitors not shying away from coming up to say hi (like the one in the picture)! Also, Roys peak track is only 6 minutes by car and it has a really stunning view over Lake Wanaka, especially at sunrise.

The staff is really friendly and did their best to make the lockdown a pleasant time for everyone! They made sure we had it nice and warm in our cars providing blankets if needed, managed to get more puzzles and games so we weren't getting bored and even made arrangements with both the local supermarket (so no one had to go out to get groceries) and civil defence (so we could move into rooms to sleep in without having to pay more). Pene, the lovely woman from the reception, even lend us her baking tray so we could keep ourselves busy baking cakes and brownies. They also gave us many ideas of what to do in the area once we were allowed to move again.

All in all they made something that could have easily been the end of our trip to New Zealand to a really enjoyable time that none of us will forget!

Thank you for that!
Ella, Kai and Moritz

Booked 2 nights at this idyllic location out of the hustle and bustle of Wanaka on the Mt Aspiring road. Camping grounds which overlook an arm of Lake Wanaka.Going this morning but loved every minute. There's the Glendhu Track to walk which if you're fit will take you all the way back to Wanaka or you could cycle it. Its narrow in places. Or if you have car you can go to Mt Aspiring. Be careful there are fords to go through. Or you could use the cycle track I think for $30 which is on way just further on left past camp. Facilities are always clean and tidy. $1 for a hot shower or you could swim in the lake. Too cold for me. Gets fairly full by 4pm so might pay to book. Amazing views!!!

Amazing location on the lake front, 10 mins from Wanaka centre, and several walking trails along the way.

Facilities themselves were fine, however the site is huge and could definitely benefit from at least doubling the number of toilets and showers.

The site is definitely geared more towards a large local family holiday, and as such is very crowded with lots of people on the site.

Overall, fine. There's not much else in Wanaka.
