Detailed Reviews
Silverpine Lodge is truly a hidden gem! You can't quite see it from the road, but you can see everything from its perch on the hill between the two lakes. It’s a bit of a diamond in the rough with absolutely phenomenal views!
It's almost more of a bed and breakfast than a lodge, as it is very private and intimate. The owners of the lodge, Mike and Sue are great hosts who are essentially welcoming you into their home. From the second we arrived until we departed they ensured that we were having a great stay. Want a beer while you are enjoying the view, done. Want to sleep in, eat early, eat late, book a helicopter, directions, anything, they happily accommodate.
Breakfast with Sue's homemade Muesli was the perfect start to each day. Along with cold offerings of yogurt and fresh fruit they also offered any type of hot breakfast you desired. Dinners were delicious; each included a starter, main and dessert, with variety from night to night, a soup as a starter the first night a salad the next. I don't have any food allergies but I noticed they were very accommodating to another guests food preferences. They have a small but good wine list to choose from, mostly local wines with fair pricing even though you are a captive audience. Evenings are best spent chatting by the fire or enjoying the moon over the lake. It’s a quiet place to really relax; there is no cell phone service, no noisy interferences at all.
The rooms are spacious, and all of them have large windows with views of the lake and mountains. There are also chairs under a covered patio for relaxing outside your room. The beds are very comfortable, simple not fussy, with fluffy white duvets. They have very nice organic toiletries (in full size containers as to not create extra waste).
A must do while staying here is the short hike up the hill behind the property, the sky opens up and you can see both Lake Wanaka and Hawea with no one and nothing around you. It's amazing!

My wife planned a surprise 40th birthday trip for me. It was absolutely magical and we owe Mike, Sue, and their dog Roy at Silverpine a sincere thank you for their hospitality.
The lodge has only four rooms so it seems extremely private. In fact it is almost as if you are their invited guests. We were the only guests the first night so it was extra intimate.
The location is extremely secluded but easy to find with proper directions. The views were sublime. We mustered up enough energy to hike up with Roy to see the view of both Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. The scenery took our breath away (the steep incline may have had something to do with it too.)
The food was lovely. Our first night we had lamb loin with Moroccan pappardelle after an out-of-this-world tomato soup with ginger. Prior to the entree we had refreshing pineapple mint vodka sorbet. They had a great bottle of Pinot Noir to go with our meal. We enjoyed a delicious dessert outside as the full moon rose over Lake Hawea. It was the kind of night you wish you could keep in slow motion or rewind.
Another couple checked in the second evening and we enjoyed having dinner with them. We had a perfectly cooked venison fillet. We enjoyed dessert that evening by the fire. Mike also joined us for some conversation. It was another unforgettable evening.
Mike and Sue were the most gracious hosts you could imagine. Sue was an amazing chef. Mike was the kind of guy you could sit and chat with for hours. And Roy a very special dog. We wish we could give them all a big hug right now, but instead can only say a heartfelt "Thank You."

For those wanting to explore the outdoors in Queenstown or Wanaka--but not deal with the crowds of people (particularly in Queenstown), I couldn't recommend Silverpine more highly. Silverpine is located on a hilltop off the main road to Wanaka--so easy to hop down to town if you wish--but otherwise it's just you, the two owners, their two dogs, and the most beautiful hotel views I saw during our stay in New Zealand.
The food is great, and the hosts are wonderful: they leave you to relax alone, but are ready whenever you need them to point you towards a great hike, or fix up some tea and fresh cookies. They could not have been nicer. In fact, when they discovered I had left my hat after check out, they delivered it to our next hotel--about an hour and a half away!
The hotel is situated between two lakes, and there are wonderful walks for every fitness level. Although we had brought out own hiking gear, Mike and Sue had plenty at the house for guests to use.
Loved the hotel, loved the hosts, and we would definitely return if we wound up in New Zealand again.

First I have to say before writing the rest of our review was that the food here was out of this world and Susan deserves every credit for the lovely dinner party they threw for their friends on Christmas Eve. They invited us to join them. We, along with their friends, enjoyed a few glasses of wine.
The rooms were minimalist but clean. The views from the room were magical. However we felt that the bathroom was poorly designed so when you had a shower the water covered most of the bathroom floor and you risked using the toilet in a pool of water.
We were told that traditions at Silverpine meant that Christmas Eve was the day most celebrated. But it was not unreasonable to expect some effort to be made in celebrating Christmas Day. As we were the only ones there we had imagined a quiet but cosy Christmas with the owners. Sadly no effort was made to socialise with us on this special occasion, not even for a meal.
Throughout our time in New Zealand we were constantly surprised by the generosity of the people we stayed with and the value for money we received. Silverpine was gracious enough to allow us to briefly call home to wish loved ones a Merry Christmas and also prepared a light lunch, in addition to what our tariff covered.
However we would make one point about being offered drinks but not being told up front that we would be charged or indeed how much they were. Most places have a drinks list and prices in plain sight. So it was with some surprise on checkout that we received an itemised bill listing the drinks we’d had. We did not, and would not, expect anything for free, and we would have been more than happy to pay for any drinks consumed had we been given the impression at any point that they were not free.
As we drove away we both felt strangely relieved. We can’t quite put our finger on why but somehow we were expecting so much more from Silverpine.

It was one of the most peaceful, beautifully relaxing places I went to during my 3 week trip in NZ. The views are stunning, the wind howling over the moors like something out of a period novel. I wanted to stay long--wish we had--and will DEFINITELY be going back. Mike and Sue are delightful hosts, amazing chefs, and like visiting with family. We loved it there and cannot wait to visit again. Be prepared to get lost in a land of stories, breathtaking landscapes and romantic magic.

Hosts Sue and Mike were terrific. Silverpine is brand new, basically, and sits on the side of a very high hill twenty to thirty minutes north of Wanaka. The views of Lake Hawea are fabulous and every room has pretty much the same view. The room was very comfortable, large and airy with a small deck and chairs accessible through a sliding glass door. Sue does the cooking and created vegetarian meals for us that were interesting and tasted outstanding. Mike, who has led a fascinating life and has a wealth of knowledge, did most of the guest interaction and was a joy to sit down with and have a drink and perhaps even a cigar. If you sit outside at at night and it's cloudless you'll be treated to a star show second to none. Finally, their cattle dog Roy is just a treat and loves, like most dogs, a good ear scratch. Highly recommended for a quiet, peaceful, relaxing time.

What a wonderful place to stay. Unfortunately we were there for only one night. Utterly rural (not a sign of another house), in an extraordinary setting high above Lake Hamea. Stunning sights. The house has a beautiful minimalist architecture and the decoration blends in perfectly. Mike and Sue are very genuine and relaxed hosts and they take good care of your winning and dining too. Roy (the dog) is happy to accompany you when you go on a walk. In all: great atmosphere. Do go there if you have the chance, it's a gem!!!

So what do you do for the Southern Man who is turning 50, you want to do something really special, but you already live in 'Paradise' in Central Otago and he's already a very outdoorsy guy ...?
You go and stay at Silverpine that's what you do!
We took a helicopter from Wanaka airport and flew in which is an awesome way to start and finish. Spent just one night / 2 days - but it felt like much longer. Already a very accomplished hunter, I had organised a hunting excursion and hubby had an absolute ball with a very like minded hunting guide - in fact the guide thanked me as he had as much fun and of course hubby was successful :-)
Absolutely gorgeous place for a romantic stay, food was as good as everyone else oozes (thanks Sue) and Mike was a fantastic interesting engaging host.
Gorgeous location, gorgeous views, you get treated like very special guests ... an overall gorgeous time.
So Kiwis and foreigners (even locals), if you are looking for something really really special, this is not to be overlooked!

We had three fantastic nights at silverpine. Mike and Sue are great hosts and Sue's cooking was spot on! Rooms and views fantastic, tourist advice excellent and Roy the dog great company when climbing the big hill. We certainly recommend this as a location to relax, enjoy and recharge.

After we drove up the small track to Silverpine lodge, there were 3 things which impressed us at arrival. The warm welcome by our hosts Sue and Mike, the stunning view over the lake and the impressive disign of the house. We stayed 3 nights at this fantastic lodge and enjoyed every moment of our stay. Sue was a top chef but also helpful with all the daily travellers wishes and Mike was the entertaining host with nice stories and a good wine taste. The rooms were big, and again, with a fantastic view. This is a place we really can recommend.
