Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located just a few minutes outside Twizel, in a tranquil setting with Mountain views. Spacious and well appointed rooms. Ample parking. Homemade complimentary snacks -my husband absolutely loved the cookies! There’s also an honesty bar for evening drinks. Great cooked breakfast options. But what really makes this place are the hosts - Mel and Mark. Mel has found the perfect balance of being incredibly welcoming but still allowing you space to relax. Great recommendations for meals and activities. We had a fantastic stay - definitely the best place we’ve stayed in NZ!

Matuka Lodge is an amazing place to stay, just outside of Twizel, and a good base for exploring the Aoraki/Mt. Cook area. We enjoy the smaller boutique hotels and B&Bs, and the Matuka Lodge ranks up there as one of the best! Very clean and comfortable! We stayed in a king room with an amazing view of the mountains, and the small pond (including some active ducks) just outside the patio door. Mel, the primary manager, along with her husband Mark, are very friendly hosts who live in a separate home on the property. Mel (with Mark's assistance when he is available) prepares a delicious made to order breakfast and adds some great conversation; plus Mel provides snacks, homemade cookies, teas and coffee, and an honor bar throughout the day. For stargazing, there is a separate little patio area on the grounds. We stayed here for 3 nights (too short) and would highly recommend the Matuka Lodge!

We stayed here as part of our alps to ocean bike tour & can’t recommend it highly enough! At the end of an 80km day we were greeted with an ice cold beer, freshly made cookies, hot shower, comfy bed and beautiful views. Mel’s an absolute gem of a host and goes out of her way to make sure everyone’s comfortable but also gives you space to relax. She also makes an awesome cooked breakfast.

We stopped at the lodge for two nights & would recommend going back. The lodge was really cozy with a warm fire and books and games to use in the evenings with a beautiful view over the pond. There was a well stocked bar & snacks available. The room was very clean & cozy and had everything we needed for our stay. Mel and Mark couldn’t have been more helpful, assisting us with our bookings and providing recommendations for meals and things to do. Mel’s breakfast was delicious & we really enjoyed it. Thank you for a wonderful trip!

My wife and I loved our 2 night stay at The Matuka Lodge on 10/14-10/15! Mel, the lodge manager was fantastic! The breakfast she prepared each day was wonderful and she went out of her way to cover anything we needed. Just one example was when we came back from a rainy walk at Mt Cook. She gave us a clothes drying rack and a warm place to put our shoes to dry. She is also great to talk to and helped us with dinner choices and things to see and do in addition to what we had planned. The lodge has great views of the mountains across the pond and the room was spotless! It was one of our favorite places to stay while vacationing in NZ. We wished we could have stayed longer!

What a place! Just perfect. Clean, tidy, great views. But, by far the best part was the host, Mel. She was incredible; attentive, polite, caring, amazing cook. It was the little things that mattered, the home baking on arrival, the message before we got there re our ETA, ensuring we had everything we needed, the cooked breakfast, the works. She is amazing. If I could her more than 5 stars, I would.
