Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a most wonderful and memorable stay. Matuka Lodge is a very beautiful, peaceful, and restful place. From our room, we looked out across a pond with ducks and lily-pads to mountains. Mel is the most welcoming kind person and Mark makes the best breakfasts-his buttered grilled tomatoes are delicious. We stayed two nights and I could have stayed so much longer! We did a wonderful hike in the Hooker Valley and locally as well. The dining options in town were great, too.

We spent two nights at Matuka Lodge, and we would have loved to be there longer. Our hosts were so welcoming and helpful - they made us feel at home right away. They provided help with dinner reservations, laundry and information about the area. Our room was fabulous - a beautiful private view of the pond, landscaping, ducks and distant mountains. The room was impeccably furnished, clean and with a large well-appointed bathroom. The living area of the house was equally beautiful and relaxing. Breakfast each morning was delicious! Really, the entire experience staying at Matuka Lodge was wonderful.

We stayed two nights at the wonderful Matuka Lodge. Wonderful accomodations. Outstanding hosts, Mel was delightful and her husband is an outstanding breakfast cook. The lodge is less than an hour from the Hooker Valley Trail. Twizel has fine restaurants to choose from. The Matuka Lodge is very relaxing, incredibly clean, with great views. Highly recommended.

The lodge itself is very tasteful but comfortable. The residents sitting area is relaxed with a view over the large pond. The room is nicely furnished and the en suite is superb. Mark’s breakfasts were delicious. Mel is an absolutely lovely bubbly lady, I am so glad that I met her. Nothing was too much for her and our room was clean and fresh each day. Mel’s baking skills were an added plus, delicious chocolate chip cookies and wonderful fruit cake. A delightful stay made extra special by such lovely hosts. The ducks were very friendly too! Thank you Mark and Mel!

If you are lucky enough to go to Twizel, then Matuka Lodge is the perfect place. Mel and Mark are absolutely lovely and made us feel so welcome. Our room which was called Benmore was spacious with a fabulous bathroom, very comfy bed and plenty of space to just sit and soak up the amazing views from the room. There's an outside area to just sit and relax, or just gawp at the spectacular scenery. Breakfast was, in the words of Tina Turner, simply the best. A very happy stay.

What a wonderful place. Mel and Mark are superb hosts and were most welcoming. Our room was beautifully decorated with an amazing view of their lake and the mountains backdrop. Lovely toiletries provided. Breakfast was delicious, made using local produce. A great base for exploring the area.

What a beautiful and quiet place! And Mel is born to be the best place. We can 100 % recommend this Lodge, we felt so welcome and being taken care of. Also breakfast is one of the best in New Zealand. Unfortunately our room was not available due to a water damage in the room but Mel organised us another room... in an amazing villa just for the two of us. It was amazing! Still we went for breakfast and socialising to Matuka Lodge and we would have evenly enjoyed to stay there the whole time. Thank you Mel, you are amazing and we enjoyed every minute.

We had a most wonderful four nights stay at Matuka Lodge. The rooms with the terrace and mountain view are just gorgeous. The gourmet breakfast was so delicious and also the option to have coffee, tea and snacks at all times was most helpful. We also enjoyed the deck chair area to view the stunning night sky - stargazing at its best. Also the perfect location to discover the Mount Cook area and the surrounding lakes by bike and car and also the Clay Cliffs. We felt at home and were sad to leave this beautiful place and these wonderful hosts, Mel and Mark! Best stay on our round trip!

Matuka Lodge is an amazing place. Mel and Mark are fantastic hosts and are full of useful information which they happily impart. The accommodation is the best we have had so far on this trip and is truly 'First Class'. The rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed with lovely modern bathrooms. The rooms all look out over a lovely pond with ducks and trout. All very relaxing. Breakfasts were fun and delicious, we chose to sit around a communal table though an in room option was also available. Thanks Mel for a fantastic stay.
