We stayed 3 nights at Omahau Downs while hiking in the area. We stayed in THE LODGE building which as 4 large rooms with own patio deck, plus a shared kitchen, living space, and wash machine. The King-Size bed was very comfortable and it was great to have the kitchen and wash machine. The view out the patio door was amazing. It is very close to town for restaurants and food shopping. Our hostess was laid back and very accommodating. Would definitely stay here again. A little difficult to find without GPS as they are not allowed to have a sign by the road - the name is engraved into the stone gateway - look for the NZ blue lodging signs 400m before the entrance.

We stayed here after floods near Franz Joseph changed our plans. It is very spacious and has a nice view on the Southern Alps.
Room and bathroom were also clean.

There is a lot of parking space and checking in and out was easy.

Location wise it is right outside of Twizel and in the Middle of Lake Tekapo and My Cook. So a perfect spot for a few day trips.

A great place to stay with amazing views!! The owners of the property were very friendly and helpful. Very close to the Twizel village. Extremely quiet and relaxing. The cottage waa very cosy and it had all that we required for our stay. We would definitely recommend Omahau Downs!!

Travelling with my extended family, I'd booked to stay here 3 months earlier, passed on credit card details and received a confirmation e mail from the Omahau Downs website.
On arriving at 5pm, we were told they were full and we weren't booked in. They blamed this on 'computer problems a few months ago', and despite me having a copy of our confirmation with us, blamed me for not emailing them back to check that the confirmation was confirmed! Completely unprofessional, and pretty useless in such a remote area to be so unbothered about serious booking failiures.
They did phone around and find us (more expensive) accommodation in Twizel, but were pretty ungracious about it.
Very disappointing, considering I chose it on the basis of all the decent reviews.

Omahau Downs was the saving grace to our disappointing Mount Cook visit. From the outside, it wasn't appealing but our perception changed when we stepped in.

The room was big for just 2 of us and the view deck was a treat to the eyes. On a clear day, you are able to see Mount Cook (we missed it of course). Nearer the lodge, you get to see the sheep grazing the grass. A refreshing and peaceful sight indeed. It also serves as a good base if you are traveling up to Mount Cook.

There are 4 rooms in the lodge and they share a common living area. We (there were 4 of us) were fortunate to have the living area all to ourselves. Breakfast is also served in the living. Tip: You must try the host's egg omelette...highly recommended! Both Nic and Shawn (i hope i get their names right) are friendly and gave us many tips for our next destination.

The not-so-good:
- we almost had to find an alternative place for the night as strong winds damaged the electrical supply. pray hard it doesn't happen to your stay!
- you are in the middle of nowhere, the nearest stores are about 5 minutes drive away in Twizel town centre. (no big deal tho)

We stayed one night at Omahau out of our 12-day NZ trip, and we regreted ... should have stayed longer !! The room is clean and spacious. The atmosphere is casual and cosy. The common room has a real fire-place for wood burning. We like the decoration very much, stylish and country. In front of the deck of our room is an almost borderless piece of grass-land, where we saw one or two hares running across in the morning. The bread & cake for the breakfast was excellent. The hosts were very kind and helpful. If it wasn't Sean who highlighted Mt John Observatory for us, we would not have visited this spectacular place overlooking Lake Tekapo, on our way to Akaroa.
Thank you, Sean & Nico, we love your place very much, and hope to visit you again.

Close to town, yet far enough to feel like you're the only one in the universe staring up at the stars. The cottages are really well equipped and spacious. And the best feature of the area has gotta be the stargazing.

It's about a gorgeous one hour drive to Mt Cook and 2 minutes from then Twizel town.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this quaint chalet which we entitled "The Little House on the Prairie". The amazing views of Mount Cook and peaceful location will last in our memories for a long time. The accommodation was well equipped and a short drive from the supermarket for supplies. The bedroom was a little small but this really wasn't a problem.

There were just the two of us on a nostalgic road trip, and we were looking for something different. We bought fresh fish from the salmon farm down the way and cooked up in the well-equipped kitchen. The host was busy with drafting some sheep with his sheepdogs, but settled us into our cottage in a friendly way. We walked across the paddocks in the evening. The cottage was super and clean and spacious ; would be a great place to bring kids and grand-kids and stay for a while

We stayed in the original farmhouse for our honeymoon with our 10 month old baby. Stunning views from all cottages and great value for money. An excellent base for exploring the Mt Cook region, with the township of Twizel not far for groceries or Thai takeaway. We arrived on a freezing and blustery evening but it did not take long for the wood fire to heat up the cottage. Each room has its own electric heater too. Plenty of room for a little one to explore which was useful. Sean and Nicola are lovely and laid back hosts. On our second night Sean set the fire for the wood fire bath. It was a highlight of our trip. After hiking all day, there is nothing better than sipping wine from a hot bath with a view of the mountains and later stars. Great invention! My only feedback on Omahau would be, it would be handy to have a few more condiments in the kitchen to ease making a meal and breakfast. We stayed at other cottages where a few more bits and pieces just added that extra touch. Will definitely be back though.
