Pukaki Air Lodge is a purpose-built five bedroom lodge, positioned in a unique location on Pukaki Airfield (2km north of Twizel). Opened in October 2018, the lodge is specifically built to appeal to Alps-to-Ocean cyclists, touring aviators and visitors to the Mackenzie basin, and offers easy access to the many activities on offer in this lovely part of the South Island. The lodge is incorporated into our hangar where our Nanchang aircraft lives and interested guests may view this plane on request. Guests will wake up to uninterrupted views of the Mackenzie Basin, and can indulge in coffee on the veranda outside each room with views to Aoraki Mt Cook in the North. The Lodge is built right at the end of the Pukaki Airport Runway, so those who are interested in aviation have a perfect vantage point from which to watch takeoffs and landing of the aircraft that use the airfield by day. There are often gyrocopters, biplanes and your hosts own Nanchang Warbird flying around. Guests can take joyrides or scenic flights in these aircraft on request, giving further unique views of the mountains and many surrounding lakes. By night, with no traffic or light pollution the clear views of the brilliant stars of the Mackenzie dark sky reserve can be gazed at in absolute peace and tranquility

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is one of the several lodges on the pukaki air strip. The lady was nice. Gave me early check in. I could not get latter check out which was disappointing because usually in the United States check out is at 11 am or later. in NZ its 10 am. I did a quick run to mt cook national park and got back around 10 am and by the time the room was cleaned out. I sat in the lounge for a bit checking my plan for the day while I was told I had to get out as they were locking up the place to be somewhere by 11:15 am. as I was standing next to my vehicle checking maps on my phone in the parking area the guy yells from the balcony that I had "overstayed" and he "suggests I get going" I was a bit confused what seems to have offended him exactly since I had already left the lodge at that point, regardless this is no way to talk to a guest. I start to ask is there a problem when he yells no talking with a offensive sign and runs inside. This encounter felt shocking as I never stay at places with rude hosts. Sadly I won't be visiting this place again and wouldn't be able to recommend it.

I am really disappointed with your review especially since you told me how much you liked the place, and you were in no hurry to leave. I went out of my way to allow you to check in at 11am on the morning of your stay, some 4 hours earlier than our check in time. The caretaker asked you to leave at 11.15am because he had to go and did not want to leave me dealing with a guest reluctant to leave an hour and half past check out time. You were also well aware of check out time as I had informed you the day before that a later time was not possible. I however will talk to the caretaker, as rudeness is not acceptable in any circumstance, so I apologize for that.

Will look at how to incorporate staying here on my next New Zealand trip. It was such a treat after a long day of peddling on the Alps2Ocean. Lively hosts who made it a fantastic experience. Great views. Very peaceful. Lots of thanks to Muddy & Mary

Amazing accommodation as part of our A2O Group Cycle Holiday, quite a unique spot on the airfield. We loved watching the aircraft come and go and the skydiving in the evening. Amazing sunsets to view. Wonderful helpful hosts and great breakfasts provided. A relaxed atmosphere here with everything we could need. We would recommend and would love to return. Thanks Andrew & Susan

Fantastic Air Lodge! Super new, neat and clean, spacious, luxurious and comfortable. Delicious breakfast. The hosts (Mary and Mudy) were very friendy and sweet. We even were allowed to put our Cessna in their hangar and use their spare car for driving. Fantastic location and view of the scenery (WX), runway and windsack! Ideal for day trips discovering the south island incl. Milford Sound ;-). Small village with good food (recommending Fishtail/Indian cuisine and the Poppies Cafe for the local Mt Cook Salmon) nearby. Book in advance - Pukaki Air Lodge is veeery busy and cyclicts love it as they use it as stop for the Alps to Ocean trail. Thx for an incredible stay! :)))

Great greeting on arrival, awesome breakfast, comfiest beds, big well appointed rooms, awesome views over the airfield and to the mountains and Mt Aoraki. We loved our stay and would highly recommend to anyone. We were 12 cyclists and we couldn’t have asked for better.

Clean, large , well appointed rooms, but the real bonus that sets this apart is , its an aviation enthusiasts paradise ! The accomodation is actually part of a cleverly designed air craft hangar , with real planes and right on the airfield. The upstairs lounge houses a treasure chest of aviation books And for non aviators, it is a really comfortable place to stay just a few kilometres from Twizel. Mary , the owner , is a great source of info

We stayed here as part of the A2O bike ride and we were glad of the choice ,. The rooms were large and well-appointed and there was use of as large lounge with great views of the countryside. Breakfast was basic - help-yourself which included eggs etc so good enough. Mary the host could not have been more accommodating.

It was such a treat to stay here.  Not a motel, not a hotel, perhaps something in between.  This was a perfect choice for staying somewhere in the region.  The setting at the airfield is great, and it's only a couple of km from the township.  I much preferred it to what was on offer in Twizel itself. The room was clean, quiet, spacious and comfortable.  I fried a couple of eggs every morning for breakfast.  The upstairs lounge was a lovely retreat, and worked well when some friends came to visit.  I would definitely stay here again.

We were lucky to have the accommodation to ourselves - never expected to find a large guest lounge with views of the Mackenzie Basin plus and even larger kitchen lounge and outside deck area for residents to use. Absolutely brilliant bed with great linen Easy to use bathroom Rooms have plenty of space with a ranch slider to access outside seating. Having recently stayed at the Hilton in Queenstown this property is MORE superior. It is the quality and the service that makes a place. Well done Mary
