Pukaki Air Lodge is a purpose-built five bedroom lodge, positioned in a unique location on Pukaki Airfield (2km north of Twizel). Opened in October 2018, the lodge is specifically built to appeal to Alps-to-Ocean cyclists, touring aviators and visitors to the Mackenzie basin, and offers easy access to the many activities on offer in this lovely part of the South Island. The lodge is incorporated into our hangar where our Nanchang aircraft lives and interested guests may view this plane on request. Guests will wake up to uninterrupted views of the Mackenzie Basin, and can indulge in coffee on the veranda outside each room with views to Aoraki Mt Cook in the North. The Lodge is built right at the end of the Pukaki Airport Runway, so those who are interested in aviation have a perfect vantage point from which to watch takeoffs and landing of the aircraft that use the airfield by day. There are often gyrocopters, biplanes and your hosts own Nanchang Warbird flying around. Guests can take joyrides or scenic flights in these aircraft on request, giving further unique views of the mountains and many surrounding lakes. By night, with no traffic or light pollution the clear views of the brilliant stars of the Mackenzie dark sky reserve can be gazed at in absolute peace and tranquility

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We were lucky to have the accommodation to ourselves - never expected to find a large guest lounge with views of the Mackenzie Basin plus and even larger kitchen lounge and outside deck area for residents to use.
Absolutely brilliant bed with great linen
Easy to use bathroom
Rooms have plenty of space with a ranch slider to access outside seating.
Having recently stayed at the Hilton in Queenstown this property is MORE superior.
It is the quality and the service that makes a place. Well done Mary

This is a highly unusual accommodation in a perfectly re-developed airport hangar. It provides all the comfort of a hotel with very generous space (it is a hangar!). Excellent location for trips to Mt Cook and Lake Pukaki. The view of Mt Cook on the horizon (weather permitting) is unforgettable. Be aware that breakfast is self-service, including preparation.

We stayed here as part of the A2O bike ride and we were glad of the choice ,. The rooms were large and well-appointed and there was use of as large lounge with great views of the countryside. Breakfast was basic - help-yourself which included eggs etc so good enough. Mary the host could not have been more accommodating.

Stayed for a couple of nights. The lodge is just outside Twizel at the air field. Very good location for Mt Cook and just a short 5 min ride into town. Great place to watch the small planes take off and land in the afternoon as near the runway and the bedroom faced onto it. Not noisy as they only seem to be flying in the afternoon. Very well designed lodge, modern, high ceilings, large windows for the views and the light. Nicely finished off in the rooms and a large shower and comfy bed.

Really good views from the bedrooms and shared lounge of the mountains. Chairs outside the bedroom for watching the sun rise or star gazing at night (no light pollution and so best view of stars all trip).

Excellent communal areas of the kitchen, outside seating area and lounge. Kitchen very well equipped and so can easily cook in the evening, and then eat outside at the Tae and chairs. For breakfast there is bread, eggs, cereal, yogurt, fruit, jams, marmite etc all supplied for you to help yourself.

Hosts were very friendly and helpful suggested local walks. Very relaxing and chilled place in which to enjoy the surroundings. Overall a really great place to stay

Fantastic Air Lodge!
Super new, neat and clean, spacious, luxurious and comfortable. Delicious breakfast.
The hosts (Mary and Mudy) were very friendy and sweet. We even were allowed to put our Cessna in their hangar and use their spare car for driving.
Fantastic location and view of the scenery (WX), runway and windsack!
Ideal for day trips discovering the south island incl. Milford Sound ;-).
Small village with good food (recommending Fishtail/Indian cuisine and the Poppies Cafe for the local Mt Cook Salmon) nearby.
Book in advance - Pukaki Air Lodge is veeery busy and cyclicts love it as they use it as stop for the Alps to Ocean trail.
Thx for an incredible stay! :)))

We enjoyed a wonderful 2 night stay with Mary and Grant where they recommended and dropped us at restaurants, shared their passion for all things aviation, showed us their plane and were perfect hosts.

In addition, the rooms, facilities and setting were first class. We will stay again.

This is an ideal venue for anyone with an aviation interest and we are sure that their success will only build as other become aware of how good staying at Pukaki Air Lodge is.

Lovely spot to stop. Great accommodation ( unique in fact ) , looking out over the air field with Mt Cook in full view and a brilliantly clear night sky for amazing star gazing.
A bit out of Twizel ( not easily walkable ) but the owners more than happy to shuttle you in and out at night , at your convenience.
Would highly recommend it .

Fantastic place to stay. Although just outside Twizel Mary lets you borrow a car to go to town. Great rooms that look out over the airfield so you can watch planes and skydivers to the backdrop of Mr Cook. Great breakfast in the dining area with all you could need. Highly recommend

Clean, large , well appointed rooms, but the real bonus that sets this apart is , its an aviation enthusiasts paradise !
The accomodation is actually part of a cleverly designed air craft hangar , with real planes and right on the airfield. The upstairs lounge houses a treasure chest of aviation books And for non aviators, it is a really comfortable place to stay just a few kilometres from Twizel. Mary , the owner , is a great source of info

Our group, were hosted by Mary and Muddy on 2 seperate nights, during our Alps 2 Ocean cycle journey.
Can highly recommend this property for all, don’t let the fact that it’s a little out of town distract you.
The breakfast supplied was also great, and nothing was a problem.
We were even driven back to town for dinner and then driven home after dinner.
