The pandemic began shortly after our move to Philly. We had not yet visited Valley Forge, and thought a weekend trip to the area would be a great first post-vaccine getaway. We had a wonderful stay with Pattye - Great Valley House has beautiful grounds, is a great location for going to Valley Forge (we biked, so even shorter if driving), and the breakfasts provided are AMAZING! The rooms and building are definitely historic and very bed and breakfast-y in character (decorated with lots of antiques, etc.), which we enjoyed. Bed was comfortable, and our room also had a good amount of space (couch, table) as well. Would definitely recommend for couples planning to visit Valley Forge/the area.

A beautiful old house, but invisible under the owner's sprawling collections of dolls, quilts, toys and other knick-knacks. There's a particularly chilling collection of mannequins dressed in wedding gowns in one of the front parlors. The owner herself was overbearing, patronizing and passive-agressive. We like to stay at B&Bs and enjoy making conversation over the breakfast table with new acquaintances, but at the Great Valley House we felt imprisoned in our seats while the owner boasted loudly about her house, her antiques, even her daughter's musical skills. Politely telling her that we had an agenda for the day (and couldn't wait to get out of the dimly lit, overcrowded kitchen) was always met with stiff disapproval and disappointment. I have never felt so uncomfortable in any establishment before.

The rooms themselves are rather nice, although equally crammed with toys and quilts. We had specially requested the room with en-suite bath tub, only to be told when we arrived that the owner specifically bans use of the tub for baths -- strictly showers only.

This is a historic, 17th century house with a great deal of charm. The breakfast foods were creative and well-cooked (though note: you eat what you're given -- the menu is whatever the owner feels like cooking) and the rooms were fairly spacious. However, the manner of the owner and the tremendous amount of clutter far outweigh any advantages to staying at the Great Valley House.

This was a perfect location and a beautiful, historical house. I was the only guest for two mid-week nights (although it was sold out the next weekend). As with the other review, I must agree that it was a little chilly - especially in the bathroom. The owner - who was friendly enough and for the most part left me alone - did warn me that the water needs to heat for a few moments (and also asked that I not let it run too long, as they have a well). I spent very little time in the common areas as I had the rest of the house to myself and my room was very welcoming. The original part of the house - where you eat breakfast (which wasn't nearly what it could or should have been) - was pretty neat, particularly the fireplace.

But ... the entire house could have been cleaner. A lot cleaner. Particularly the breakfast room. Cluttered, dusty, just yucky. Common areas, too. My room had lots of dust. Shame, too, because it was a beautiful room.

I was in town for a convention and wished to stay at a place that was cheaper than the hotel faire in the area. Seeing there were vacancies, we jumped at the occasion to stay somewhere unique!

Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the breakfasts were incredible. The real treasure is the innkeeper—she knows SO MUCH about the history of the house and the area, and has such a deep and abiding passion for her craft and guests. We felt *so* well cared for, and the house and grounds are GORGEOUS.

Five stars are not high enough for this place—it’s not simply a hotel, it’s an experience. Jump if you have the opportunity to take it.

Great older house run by Pattye as a bed and breakfast. If you like older houses, 200 year old plus this is for you. Only 4 or 5 rooms so reserve early.

Great morning breakfast with other guests.

A stones throw from Valley Forge. Stay here to take in the whole experience in history.

Charming and well done.

I gave my in-laws a "gift" of a weekend at the Great Valley House. Check-in time is 3pm, and because they weren't sure exactly how long the ride would be, they arrived about 15 minutes early. They tried the bell, then went and sat in the car. A few minutes later the owner came out and asked, in a very unfriendly way, what they wanted. They explained they were early, and received a grudging, "Well, as long as you're here, you may as well come in." The owner never displayed the warmth and friendliness that most B&B innkeepers show, and they wondered why she was even in the business! Add to that the fact that that the water in the shower was never warm enough for them to take a shower, the fact that she "trashed" a local restaurant because "their portions are too big", and the fact that the bathrooms were also very cold, and the fact that this is a historially interesting spot couldn't compete. We're all used to making compromises at historic inns, but unfriendly service and cold water shouldn't have to be among those.

Compared to other bed and breakfasts I have stayed at in the US and abroad, this one was undeniably the worst in my experience. If you are considering staying here even after reading all of the reviews, I would suggest checking it out before committing yourself to reserving a room. Look behind the radiator and curtains at the decades of dust and in the corners of the ceiling at the abundance of cobwebs, view the cleanliness of the bathroom (especially the floor) and feel the damp, mustiness throughout the house.

If you have allergies like I do or if you have difficulty walking up/down quite a few steep, narrow stairs without any type of handrail in most cases (especially carrying your suitcase), this really is not the place for you.

I also had an unfortunate experience with one of the breakfasts I had while there. After laying my arm in some jelly on the table (when we hadn't had jelly with any of our breakfasts so who knows how long it had been there), I suffered a day of internal distress after eating a concoction of boiled eggs with mustard (?) in a type of dough.

If the owner took the time to really clean and air out the rooms, provide you with more than a single towel and washcloth per guest, improve on the heating options, simplify the breakfast while at the same time giving you greater variety and tried harder to be friendly and more accommodating to her guests (rather than talking about herself and her angelic, brilliant daughter who is getting married to an equally wonderful guy shortly), the house is historic and has ambiance. It also is somewhat centrally located.

Until then, I would suggest the Staybridge Suites in Royersford. I understand it opened in May of this year (2009) and is conveniently located right on 422 approximately 10 miles Northwest of the main visitor's entrance to Valley Forge National Park and slightly further from King of Prussia mall, one of the largest malls in the States. Also, the Philadelphia Premium Outlet mall is two exits further west on 422. There is an Outback Steak House conveniently located right next to the hotel, but I would suggest Giovanni's on Main Street for dinner with their super large portions of delicious homemade Italian entrees and AnnaMarie's for breakfast if you choose not to eat the continental breakfast provided by the hotel which includes boiled eggs, cereal, pastries, yogurt, fruit, juice and coffee. I stayed at this hotel twice and would give it five stars in all categories both times.

The primary difficulty with this B&B is that it is dank, dark and smells like 300 year old mold. I spent a whole hour here and was impressed by the filthy, stinky, dusty, smelly conditions. In short, it is cluttered and unclean. I did not even want to think about getting in the bed or using the bath. The hostess is either very lonely or ADHD as she talks incessantly about herself. There are very creepy mannequins about the place that are covered in dust, but the overwhelming problem here is that the building is down in a hole with little parking. It is on a very congested busy highway which makes it interesting to get out of. The building itself is in very poor shape. Photoshop enhancement of actual bldg.advertises the place.

We stay in many B&B's. In fact, Great Valley House was the 3rd inn we had stayed in over a 2 week period. As others have said, the house is a historic home in Valley Forge, PA. When you pull into the drive, there are no directions as to where to go. The only options we saw was a garage door with a clear path and a small walkway overgrown with bushes. Luckily, we chose correctly and took the walkway. The house is extremely cluttered and I do mean extremely cluttered. Our room was large, but again cluttered to the point that there was no place to set anything on a table, etc. We were to have a private bath which ended up located in the hall. That's fine, but the small trickle of water which made up the shower with the water temp changing according to who else in the house was using water was not. Neither were the selection of bath products availabe for use. All had either been used before or worse yet, were from other chain hotels, such as Holiday Inn..the names clearly printed on the products. My worse problem with the inn was that our room and bath were not clean. Our breakfast was poor and our innkeeper a little too consumed with herself and not her guests. What a shame. This historic home, if left simple and true to the period in which it was built, would have been lovely.

As others have mentioned. This is a creepy unclean house with a very strange hostess. The breakfast food was terrible. We left and went out to a diner. We had paid for two days so we had two nights of poor sleep on a tired bed and dusty and unclean conditions. The movie "Misery" comes to mind. Avoid.
