The rooms themselves are rather nice, although equally crammed with toys and quilts. We had specially requested the room with en-suite bath tub, only to be told when we arrived that the owner specifically bans use of the tub for baths -- strictly showers only.
This is a historic, 17th century house with a great deal of charm. The breakfast foods were creative and well-cooked (though note: you eat what you're given -- the menu is whatever the owner feels like cooking) and the rooms were fairly spacious. However, the manner of the owner and the tremendous amount of clutter far outweigh any advantages to staying at the Great Valley House.
But ... the entire house could have been cleaner. A lot cleaner. Particularly the breakfast room. Cluttered, dusty, just yucky. Common areas, too. My room had lots of dust. Shame, too, because it was a beautiful room.
Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the breakfasts were incredible. The real treasure is the innkeeper—she knows SO MUCH about the history of the house and the area, and has such a deep and abiding passion for her craft and guests. We felt *so* well cared for, and the house and grounds are GORGEOUS.
Five stars are not high enough for this place—it’s not simply a hotel, it’s an experience. Jump if you have the opportunity to take it.
Great morning breakfast with other guests.
A stones throw from Valley Forge. Stay here to take in the whole experience in history.
Charming and well done.
If you have allergies like I do or if you have difficulty walking up/down quite a few steep, narrow stairs without any type of handrail in most cases (especially carrying your suitcase), this really is not the place for you.
I also had an unfortunate experience with one of the breakfasts I had while there. After laying my arm in some jelly on the table (when we hadn't had jelly with any of our breakfasts so who knows how long it had been there), I suffered a day of internal distress after eating a concoction of boiled eggs with mustard (?) in a type of dough.
If the owner took the time to really clean and air out the rooms, provide you with more than a single towel and washcloth per guest, improve on the heating options, simplify the breakfast while at the same time giving you greater variety and tried harder to be friendly and more accommodating to her guests (rather than talking about herself and her angelic, brilliant daughter who is getting married to an equally wonderful guy shortly), the house is historic and has ambiance. It also is somewhat centrally located.
Until then, I would suggest the Staybridge Suites in Royersford. I understand it opened in May of this year (2009) and is conveniently located right on 422 approximately 10 miles Northwest of the main visitor's entrance to Valley Forge National Park and slightly further from King of Prussia mall, one of the largest malls in the States. Also, the Philadelphia Premium Outlet mall is two exits further west on 422. There is an Outback Steak House conveniently located right next to the hotel, but I would suggest Giovanni's on Main Street for dinner with their super large portions of delicious homemade Italian entrees and AnnaMarie's for breakfast if you choose not to eat the continental breakfast provided by the hotel which includes boiled eggs, cereal, pastries, yogurt, fruit, juice and coffee. I stayed at this hotel twice and would give it five stars in all categories both times.
