Detailed Reviews
My friends and I had booked our getaway long before the pandemic and I wasn’t sure whether we should still go. But Canyon Ranch has adjusted well to Covid protections. There are the obvious changes - masks and hand sanitizer- but they really listened to our concerns, too. We had read an earlier review about dining being only indoors and did not feel comfortable with that, so we asked what they could do to change. Although they had never offered table service outside, Canyon Ranch (like the rest of the world) is trying to figure out service during a pandemic and they agreed to begin outdoor table service before our visit. They have a perfect dining area beside their pool and strung lights and added lanterns and heaters (temps were between 40s and 70s while we were there). Many thanks to Grant for making that happen! On van rides to hiking trips, they split hikers up between 2 vans although we could have fit into one so that we wouldn’t be close to others during our ride and they required us to wear masks on the ride. I noticed many adjustments that they implemented to keep us safe. And their customer service is amazing! Shay tirelessly coordinated our schedules (there were 5 of us) and even arranged for us to enjoy things like silk scarf painting and night vision goggles hiking that were not offered on the days we were at the resort but that we wanted to experience. Christopher checked on our group several times a day and even made sure that we had “to go boxes” of food when we left since we weren’t able to eat lunch before the airport. Everyone who worked at CR seemed invested in making sure that our stay exceeded our expectations. And the classes, programs, and spa treatments were incredible. I felt like they helped me reset during this pandemic and I returned home refreshed and energized to make some healthy changes in my life. Although this was my first visit to Canyon Ranch, it will not be my last!

Beautiful place, clean, excellent instructors.
Also:
Communication around class and services requirements was lousy. There were specific instructions prior to BMI measurements and other classes that were never communicated.
Property is extremely clean and well maintained.
Instructors were exceptional and very, very knowledgeable about their content area, wildlife, history etc.., —that made it all worth it.
Other level of service providers made trip very frustrating.
No guidance was given about how to sign up for additional activities or where things were located—you are very much on your own about how to access other opportunities.
The restaurant service was extremely frustrating even when not busy. I asked for very simple things each day (salt, lemon) and my waitress could never remember and I never saw her after my food was delivered by other people.
I had the same waitress each time so perhaps my experience does not accurately represent the rest of service. Food was delicious—-fresh, light.
I ordered coffee in my room twice and it never showed up so I had to start my activities without it.
Front office staff basically waived me in the general direction of my room and facilities.
Reception in the spa was ok but often did not know and made no attempt in figuring out answers to questions.
There was an error in booking a service and the front desk told me to wait until advising opened the next day.
Advising said I’d have to pay additional money for the change due to it being within 8 hours of service and that front desk should have helped me 12 hours prior when I requested. I explained what happened and advisor said,” I don’t know how to help you with that”
I finally was helped by someone at the front desk but it was a lot of work getting very basic needs met.
With knowledge and experience, I would return but the whole guest services experience needs to be addressed,

I hadn’t been planning to write a review but I so strongly disagreed with the reviewer from Pittsburgh that I had to chime in with my thoughts.
My husband and I enjoyed a restorative and rejuvenating four nights that exceeded our expectations in every way (my husband, who’d been dragging his feet ever so slightly at the thought of the trip, thanked me on the last night and literally said, “this experience exceeded my expectations”). Side note: We were coming from hectic, enervating careers in NYC and I decided, spur of the moment, to treat us to some healing TLC.
From the warmth of Damian in reception, to the welcome back from the others in the clubhouse lobby (when I told them I’d been years ago with my mother), each staff member we encountered was more friendly, caring and approachable than the next.
My husband and I are seasoned, discerning travelers (see my other reviews) and were hard pressed to find anything to complain about during our stay. We enjoyed a comfy, spacious executive room where we slept soundly every night after walks, hikes, fitness classes, lectures, luscious spa treatments (I understand the locker room, which had sauna, eucalyptus room, steam, jacuzzi, etc, etc will be renovated by our next visit of January 2021) and wonderfully varied, healthy yet delicious cuisine.
Just a few more of the staff members who made our stay memorable: Stephanie Ludwig, Wade and Mich, trainers, Lynn the most inspiring Pilates instructor ever!!, Gabe and Nate at the Double U, Will the astrologer, Shaina, who gave me the most lovely facial, and Diana and Evan our hiking guides.
There is a reason so many of the people we met come back to Canyon Ranch year after year. No, make that several reasons: the people, cuisine, sense of place, and passionate dedication to a culture of wellness.
Thank you, Canyon Ranch! We look forward to returning again and again.

I’ve been to Canyon Ranch about 10 times over the years and I am sad to say that this trip will be my last.
While some things have improved over the years such as the room decor, and real Pickleball courts and while I do absolutely adore some of the long term staff, the service, on this last trip, was unbearable.
Upon arriving, we had a new employee who did not know the property or the room types and kept putting us in tiny rooms with no bathtub. We finally ended up in a nice large room that we liked but it was a good 10 minute walk to the spa or restaurant. Getting our luggage moved was a 30 minute wait for a bellman.
We got into the room and ordered extra pillows and we had to call three times and it took six hours to finally arrive. Six hours for pillows...
We ordered water bottles and went through the same exact ordeal. This was 3 hours...
Booking services or dinner was a nightmare and we kept having to call Guest Services for everything. While the staff was always very nice and seemed like they were on top of things, we usually had to call back and speak to somebody else to get anything accomplished.
Last night, we ordered in-room dining at 5:20 PM because my wife had a 7 PM massage. We had to call back three times and the food did not arrive until 6:50 and it was cold.
(It should be noted that the in-room dining shows up in people cartons with plasticware. No real dishes or silverware.... )
We had skipped lunch yesterday and were starving by the time our cold dinner arrived at 6:50 PM. My wife was annoyed and wanted to cancel her 7pm massage but the inexperienced employee at Guest Services insisted that we would be charged. We tried to explain that our dinner had not arrived and finally had to speak to a manager to make sure that we were not charged for the massage that we had to cancel because my wife was starving.
We are checking out in a few hours and I would bet my beloved bulldog at home that we were charged anyway…
There were so many issues like this that we decided to leave a day early and went to the front desk yesterday to inform them and to cancel any appointments we had. The employee said that she would set up transportation to the airport the following day.
Knowing the countless debacles from lack of experienced service, I called to make sure we had transportation to the airport today and, as expected, nothing was set up.
While there are many things that I love about this place, the frustration level is no longer tolerable.
If you’re paying $800 a day, per person and you’re used to a concierge and knowledgeable employees and reasonable service, and decent food and real dishes with room service delivered within a reasonable amount of time, I can no longer recommend Canyon Ranch.

After many years of going to the Canyon Ranch, my visit in 2018 and again in 2019 several subtle changes were noticed. The first issue that I noticed was the deterioration in the food services. Menus rarely changed throughout my week there. Second, for medical services, understandably the CR does not accept assignment for medical insurance. But as of 2018, there are no Superbills issued that you could submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Thirdly and maybe most importantly for me was the reduction in the fitness staff. As of my visit in 2019 , there is a solo instructor in the fitness classes, whose responsibility is to any number of students (sometimes up to 30+) with a second instructor who will poke his or her head in periodically. In the past, these second instructors were always on hand to make sure that the guests were doing things right and not hurt themselves. Also, they provided backup instructions to persons that were slow to catch on or had some mild limitations. The primary instructor could not possibly teach and keep an eye on each guest. Now the second instructor "floats" through several different classes during the hour. I believe that this is an accident waiting to happen. When brought to the attention of the management of the CR, I was told that this practice was the "industry standard. " With the fees charged by the CR, I would assume that an effort would be made to exceed the "industry standard". Oh my, what has happened to the Canyon Ranch?

Staff were good apart from reception and accounting. Facilities a bit worn and dated, especially spa.
Reception desk was pathetic. One would expect a luxury resort to be able to help set up simple transportation. I asked front desk to arrange shuttle it Phoenix airport, a $50 service that runs hourly. When I showed up as instructed, there was a limousine waiting!! I was told that would cost $450!!!! All the rest and relaxation from my 4 day stay evaporated. Staff handled it poorly. After much ado, the manager (samantha) promised cr would cover it and I would not be billed. A few days later it appeared on my credit card bill. So far they have not returned my calls and I’m disputing charges through Amexpress.
I definitely won’t return . My friends are interested in going and asking about my experience. I am telling them to stay elsewhere. We are going to stay at ventana which is nearby in March. The spa there looks better as well as other facilities. By the way, we missed our dinner on the first night (included in cost) because everything closes at 7:30!!! Our $110 night hike got back at 8:30. We went to bed hungry. No one at resort could do anything except give us some stale cookies!
This place does NOT live up to reputation!!

I had heard about Canyon Ranch for years and was so looking forward to the experience. However, it was incredibly disappointing. The decor is run down/tired/outdated, the rooms are basic, the food is bland, the service was mediocre and at times very amateurish which you don't expect for a place of this caliber and price. Even the free tshirts they give out are polyester and the water bottles are cheap plastic. Everything is just tired looking and needs to be updated. The guy who picked us up at the airport had a bad attitude, not welcoming. The property is twice as large as Disnleyland but I wasn't offered a tour and spend the first 24 hours getting lost and having trouble finding the classes. You needed dinner reservations but I wasn't told this upon check in. I showed up for a neuromuscular massage and the massage therapist was totally annoyed that nobody told me to wear loose fitting clothing. Overall, completely overpriced for what you get and I won't be back. Very disappointed.

We take great pride in providing outstanding service and experiences for our guests, and we certainly fell short with your visit. I will share your disappointing feedback with our leadership team to learn from your comments. August 3, 2020 - a day to celebrate! After a 5 month closure, Canyon Ranch reopened today and it's better than ever! Staff and management have done an incredible job of making guests feel both welcome and safe. The vibe is so positive - It is clear that the staff is thrilled to be back. Although I can't see their smiles through their masks, the enthusiasm in their voices and sparkle in their eyes come through loud and clear.
Even though the gym has not yet opened, and class offerings are less than normal, there is still plenty to do. The newly added outdoor activities are a great addition. The food is better than ever and the newly renovated rooms are a nice upgrade.
The Canyon Ranch team has always been exceptional, The re-opening has taken it to a new level. A great big thank you to the team for all of the resilience, resourcefulness and commitment that went into making this happen. Looking forward to spending many, many more days at Canyon Ranch, the greatest place on earth!

I took this trip for some me time from my busy life and splurged to treat myself.
From the moment I arrived I have been disappointed. Let’s start with after 7hrs traveling to get here, there is no-one at the front to help with luggage or bags or to great you warmly upon arrival. My room was positioned in the back of the property, I asked for it to be moved closer to everything, they couldn’t do so. Ok fine. I was starving, it’s an all inclusive resort… restaurant told me in 15minutes too late to order anything.. go to the cafe… I go to the cafe… they are sold out of sandwiches. ‘Sir - where can I get something to eat… we are in the middle of nowhere and this resort is supposed to be all inclusive? Oh, they serve dinner at 5”. (In 2 1/2hrs). Great. I go to the room to decompress, no water or any beverages in the fridge in the room, no snacks or food. I go to the bathroom, I cut my hand on sharp chipped porcelain sink they never fixed… the faucet is dirty… I head to dinner, they have one restaurant and I am ONE person, sorry mam, we can’t accommodate you until later… unreal. This place costs a fortune, what a disappointing day. Service horrible, food availability horrible, facilities are super run down, room is unclean - I’m really disappointed and I’m staying here another three days. I highly recommend Mirival over this, I won’t make that mistake again.

Room Tip: Not worth the money. Super run down. Much better places for the experience and $.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it is vital in helping us improve our services. I am truly sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. Please accept my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience you encountered. Your feedback will be shared with our team, and we will analyze how to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Our multiple efforts to connect with you by phone, email and hand-written card during your stay were all to no avail. I personally waited at two separate occasions to try and connect with you here on property where you had made a reservation in an effort to see how we could assist in any way to improve your stay and you did not show up to one, and cancelled the other appointment. Further to that, your room was kept on 'do not disturb' for practically the duration of your stay. We hope to welcome you back soon and provide you with the exceptional service we are known for. Please don't hesitate to reach out if there's anything we can do to make your next visit more enjoyable. Warm regards, Bradley Montgomery Director of Operations Canyon Ranch Tucson

I just checked out of Canyon Ranch Tucson and had to write my review while I was still feeling refreshed. I believe this experience is as good as you give. I gave into all that was available and stepped out of my comfort zone, and had a fantastic experience. My wellness advisor Jerry was very helpful and moved around times so I could fit everything in, my wellness journey therapists, Jenny, Desiree, and Gretchen were amazing, and Chef Mike and Chef Shawn make food entertaining and delicious. I ate wonderful food and lost 5 lbs!
I choose the connect with Wellness path, and I achieved my goals, who knew making a scarf could be so life-changing. As a solo, I chose to sit at the community table for 2 nights, and I highly recommend it to connect with other solos.
The room I had was 124, it was a nice King size suite, and all of the rooms feel more like a villa. Next time I would choose a larger room (and a longer stay). The spa is amazing, and again Bliss matched her name and gave me a blissful and mentally restorative treatment.
I read a few complaints about not getting a tour, but my bellman gave me one, and one is offered 2x per day. Only a few items I would change, 1st I feel the welcome bags should be backpacks, maybe just because it rained during my stay and I also had an umbrella, but it was hard to manage all. Also, it seems the indoor pools sit unused. It was colder during my stay, and I asked to use the indoor pools (the door says by appointment only) I called the advisors, and they then called guest services, and someone called me back and said if there was no class, I was welcome to use them. Since I made the inquiry I went in twice and NO ONE was even in the entire building. This is a beautiful area, and it seems when there is bad weather, they would promote it more.
Other than that, I can find no issues, and I will be back. It is pricey, and you have to watch what classes are an add-on fee vs FREE, but what is our wellness worth?
Hope I can keep this good feeling going until I get a chance to be on the property again.

I don’t recall seeing the program in the activities list when I was there last year. You can go to canyonranchtucsonactivities and see everything that’s currently offered.
Canyon Ranch was sold last year and the new owner corporation has really kicked in now. It is far from the terrific place it once was and prices are much higher (almost double). Fewer activities, most of the old staff gone, food not nearly what it once was, obviously unhappy staff, grounds not in good shape, lots of construction going on. They’ve changed the Old Arizona furniture to “IKEA West.”
I have gone there regularly for over 30 years, but won’t be going back. I mourn the loss of this place. It has been a staple in my life for 30 years. Be sure you check the more recent Trip Advisor reviews of Canyon Ranch—all of them.
BTW, I just had a sleep evaluation from my local hospital, part of a very thorough physical. The machine now goes home with you. You hook up and sleep, the data is collected overnight, and you take the machine back next day. Found I had “minor sleep apnea,” like over 60% of people over the age of 60. Lost 20 lbs. and it totally disappeared.
Absolutely. If you exercise and eat the tasty but low calorie food served, you will likely lose a few pounds and start repositioning your weight.
I didn’t see any classes offered for CME when we were there. However, I believe they may still offer such classes as special seminars or through their highlighted events packages.
