Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I travelled down from Hamilton to attend a family birthday, hosted by Michelle and Lindsay. Great food, cold beer, these guys treat the locals more like family than customers and we were made to feel the same. The steak and blue cod are top notch. A must visit if you're in north Canterbury.

I spent the day at Waiau Tavern, by myself not knowing a soul, within minutes i made friends with the locals, sent on a walk alongside the river and was just throughly enjoyable and full of laughter. i had a hearty burger (YUMMO) on the front deck outlooking the cosy small town of Waiau. Thank you for being an exceptional host Michelle, will be back for sure!

I recently visited Waiau Tavern and had an absolutely fantastic experience! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was simply delicious. The menu offers a great variety, and each dish was prepared with care and high-quality ingredients. The cozy ambiance and excellent service make it a perfect spot for a relaxing meal or a casual get-together. I can't recommend Waiau Tavern enough – a definite five-star gem!

Stopped for a coffee and a rest on the journey and were delighted by the friendly service and good atmosphere. Looks like a nice place to spend a lazy afternoon. The coffee was hot and strong and we were very happy with our service. We didn’t try any of the food though.

Highly recommend this darling of a country pub - a must motorhome POP.
Michelle is a top host and the blue cod meals are amazing. You wouldn’t know these hosts have battled on through earthquakes and fires - they are welcoming and friendly. A great experience.

Just had to leave a quick review of this wee tavern who are kind, welcoming and everything being kiwi encompasses. We were having a few accomodation dramas whilst we were there and were told we could camp out the back ( sadly no tent!) plus an uber friendly local offered us his sleep out. What awesome folk! Plus the beer and chips went down a treat! Thanks folks, keep on doing what you do, its lovely to have such true kiwi hospitality on display.

Dropped in on the way through for lunch. The blue cod buttie was a real revelation. Ive had lots of blue cod over the years but never like this … it was outstanding and comes with my unconditional recommendation … Speights with it was great too! Superb hospitality from owners and locals. Will definitely be back. Well worth a day trip out from Christchurch

What a corker place with two corker hosts. One of the friendliest stopovers I've encountered and I've been to some beauties . This place is a true leading gem in an area full of gems. A place of authentic downtime country faire and hospitality. Make an effort to stop by...you will definitely be treated well.

Perfect spot for a stop!

Lovely country pub, lovely people, a kitty cat that played with the kids, a plate of chips and gravy that was absolutely perfect. A spot in the sun and an ice old beverage and there's a playground just across the road for the kids too.

If you're ever driving through, this one is worth the stop.

Such a hard case place. Very friendly people. Reasonably priced meals. My husband and I shared nachos. They were lovely. We were in our campervan and because we belong to NZMCA we were allowed to park up. It had been very wet so we parked on the gravel. The licence was a lovely lady. There was no pressure to have anything to eat but we did anyway. I would recommend it and give them an A+++rating. Thank you Waiau Tavern.
