Waiau Motor Camp - Escape to our little piece of country. We are North Canterbury's oldest township with a rich history. Visit the form Jail, historic woolshed and other listed local landmarks. We offer powered and unpowered sites, or stay in one of our cabins, used to accommodate Nasella Tussanite workers back in the 1960's. We are an ideal centre point for regional attractions, being only 35 minutes to Hanmer Springs, 60 minutes to Kaikoura and 20 minutes to Mt Lyford Skifield. Go fishing in the Waiau River or try your luck hunting. Or just come & enjoy the peace and quiet of our small piece of paradise.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On a recent trip through Rainbow Station, and some of the Molesworth, we had planned to stay at Waiau with 1 of our party going to do the booking. After a big day traveling we were ready for a cabin at the Waiau Motor Camp, only to find that the booking had not been made. With an early start planned to meet another party to travel into the Clarence we thought a cabin would aid a early getaway, and avoid tents etc. However with very little space left at all, the camp owner happily offered us a site at an area yet to be developed, which was very much appreciated. however he also rang around the other nearby accommodation places to see if there was a vacancy anywhere else rather than have us camp in the unfinished area. GREAT service, really helped us out and we really appreciated the help. Great camp, good facilities, beaut showers after a long dusty day and despite the large number of campers we had a pretty restful night, and still managed to pack up and get away ready fr our next adventure. Have camped here a couple of times the last few years and always enjoyed the experience

This feels like you have stepped off the grid and are holidaying in old school NZ, don't go past it, actually take the short detour to it. Owner was great and gave me peace of mind as a female solo traveller. I stayed in an economy double and it was a great price, spotlessly clean, comfy bed and had everything I needed. All the shared facilities were just immaculate. My motorbike was parked up on the hard gravel and I felt safe and secure. The kai cart was open the night I was there so didn't go into town for food. It was probably one of the best meals I have had for a very long time and incredibly reasonable. Again friendly people happy to have a chat whilst making my food. There is the local pool just across the road and it looked brand new and very inviting i'll use it on my next visit. When breaking my trip i'll use this place now instead of Hanmer, you just can't go wrong.

We decided to take the inland route from Christchurch to Kaikoura rather than State Highway 1. The best motorhome camp on that route appeared to be in Waiau. The camp was very friendly and the staff went out of their way to help with wifi problems. All other facilities were excellent. Waiau proved to be a delightful spot with a fascinating self-guided historical trail - well worth spending an hour or so exploring. It helped that the weather was perfect and not too hot in the early morning.

This place is a pot of gold! Lovely warm cabins that are well equipped with cutlery, utensils, pots/pans, heater, towels etc.

Also provides access to free WiFi and Netflix use in each room - something you often don’t get elsewhere.

Kitchen and bathrooms are very well kept and fully functional.

Super friendly owner with some great tips for local walks etc.

Will absolutely be coming back next time we are in the area.

This smallish site in a town that was at the epicentre of the Kaikoura earthquake has much to offer. Some of the pitches are separated by hedges, giving privacy for those who prefer it, and the facilities are very clean and well maintained. There is a well equipped children’s play area, riverside walks, plus an interesting walk around the historic heritage of the town. Well worth a trip up Inland Scenic Route72. We’ll stay an extra night to sample the on-site food truck which operates on Fridays and Saturday’s.

A hidden treasure with a unique history, located in a lovely tidy village in the North Canterbury township of Waiau.
Immaculately clean, with a range of accommodation options to suit anybody.
Host have a passion for history of the camp & the local area with the on site food truck handy for a yummy meal or grazing platter delivered to your camp site or cabin, or walking distance to the pub.
Dont drive past on your adventure. Take time to stop in, stay & breathe.

If I thought this campsite couldn’t be better in the summer-we’ll I was dead wrong! The pool! The beautiful, warm, huge pool located across the road is the nicest pool we’ve ever been in. Shade, clean changing rooms, shaded swimming (!!!) and $10 for the day! Holy, what a gem.
The grounds are beautiful, playground, caravan cafe, Santa trees, amazingly clean and well stocked kitchen and relax areas. Our caravan site is powered with hedges on both sides for privacy and huge! This is our top place to stay. 25 minutes to Hanmer.
I can’t recommend it enough.

Exceptionally clean, tidy, comfortable rooms. The toilet facilities were excellent with great showers and endless hot water. We had a fab night here on our way through. Family of 5 teens and parents booked 3 cabins. Expansive views of the Waiau River on the way! Would definitely return and spend more time here :-)
