This Doc campsite is maintained by an on-site host/ ranger. Running water and flush toilets. Clean! Peaceful and everyone was respectful of the tranquility there is a covered in area for cooking and eating with picnic tables and sink with running water . The lake is a stones thow away and a phtographers. Worth a stop to see the views even if you dont stay.

I was the DOC Camp Host for Feb/Mar 2019, at McDonalds & Ottos Camps. It was a pleasure to help and share so many of your visits and stories, my thanks. Even the TWO separate 'Self Quarantined' Vans of visitors, who both had such unpleasant dealings in FJ. The two joint Campsites (Otto, older in bush and adjoining Lake Mapourika), with McDonalds newer, larger and exposed to the sun and adjoining boat ramp to Lake Mapourika. Free sand-dries all around. Mild lake for swimming (beach at Ottos). The older bush setting at Ottos can be sheltered, but also cooler and wetter than the open McDonalds Campsite. Many different spots & sites to choose from. Has had upgraded facilities since late 2019 (including new flush toilets & potable water sources). This is NOT a free site, but at the heart of the Westland National Park. NO internet or phone service, is a joy. Camp catch a trout or salmon (from the sea at Otariko Lagoon) during the season 01st Oct to 31st Mar. NO DOGS allowed, due to rare bird programmes.

We chose here after researching this campsite, lots of decent reviews. We arrived mid afternoon to find the place quite quiet with ample choice of spaces to park the campervan. We decided to choose the Otto side which was next to the lake and had really good washing facilities and clean toilets. The whole place is looked after by a ranger who cleans the toilets and around the whole area basically. He does a really good job. The place was quiet and people respected the tranquility here. The lake was literally a stones throw from our van. Great to have a refreshing dip in. There are a few wooden benches to sit and chill out eating/drinking. Take your rubbish with you as no bins here. There is loads of grassed areas to camp on also. Good for cyclists and motorbikes.

There is plenty of room to camp and a lake to take a refreshing morning dip. A group of kea's provided the campsite with some evening entertainment and a clear night ensured we a had a fantastic view of the Milky Way.

Only down side (as with all camping) was the large amount of bites from sand flies. I advise applying plenty of insect deterrent.

One of my favorite DOC sites. Spacious and well apportioned parking spaces. Next to river and also lake at the two different campgrounds within the same premise. Looks clean and has lots of private space.

Situated next to a river, calm place; we have been there on a very rainy day and night; so there were very few people there; seems to be a lovely place if the weather is nice; cheap and clean place we really recommend

Arrived early and had the pick of the sites. Good time to get in is about 2:00pm. The site manager was helpful is choosing the best spot and I could park my bike beside my tent something the cars can’t do. The toilets are clean, and the whole area is very scenic. The only downside was being on a motorcycle you have to take your rubbish with you. Not a big problem , just means an extra trip. The grounds are right beside the highway but there was no traffic noise.

One tip make sure you have something that protects you from midges as they come out when the sun come down.

Typical DOC scenic campsite with large camping area for tents and also for carpark and camper vans. Running water, and flushing toilets. The walk by the lake is serene and refreshing. Fishing and swimming is allowed in the lake. Great sunset views. Though tends to get crowded towards the end of the day. Do get there before 4pm to get better camping choices.

Kia Ora, Thank you for your review. We appreciate any feedback received, it is imperative we find out what we could look at improving. For others reading, please note you do need a fishing licence (obtained through Fish and Game NZ) to fish on the lake. Swimming is perfect way to cool down on a hot summers day. We are glad you got down to the lake and enjoyed its beauty. It is such a beautiful spot and perfect way to start or finish the day. One of the benefits to not staying in town. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in New Zealand and got to stay at more equally beautiful DOC campsites around the country. Kind Regards The Westland Tai Poutini National Park Team

We arrived at Otto campsite in the dark. I'd read the reviews so we chose Otto rather than MacDonald, but was not prepared to find that Otto was really just a carpark more than a campsite with vans parked close either side. Flushing toilets and running water facilities clean and tidy. The thrilling surprise was waking up and wandering down to the edge of the lake and WOW the view across the lake!!! It was calm with a light mist hanging above the water and the stunning alps reaching up. A beautiful start to the day before heading into Franz.

Kia Ora, Thank you for your review. We appreciate any feedback received, it is imperative we find out what we could look at improving. Hopefully you found the big grassy area to pitch your tent on for camping and didn't have to pitch it in the car park. We are glad you managed to get down to the lake in the morning, it is such a beautiful spot and perfect way to start the day. One of the benefits to not staying in town. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in New Zealand and got to stay at more equally beautiful DOC campsites around the country. Kind Regards The Westland Tai Poutini National Park Team.

Well maintained campsite. We arrived around 3.30pm and were one of the first to arrive for the evening, so had plenty of choice as to where to park, so we chose to park in the area further away from the road, which is closer to the lakefront, so you don't hear any road noise. Toilets and sinks were clean. The only problem we encountered where the sandflies. I don't normally get bitten, but walked out the door of our camper and got bitten twice straight away. If you cover up well and use insect repellent, the sunset view at the lake is totally worth standing outside to watch. Definitely worth staying at the site if you want a cheaper option than staying in franz josef itself.

Kia Ora, Thank you for your review. We appreciate any feedback received, it is imperative we find out what we could look at improving. Hopefully you managed to hide from the sand-flies and not get too badly bitten, they can be terrible little things at times. One of the local Māori myths tell that sand-flies were put here so you wouldn't stop and get stuck marvelling at the beauty of the area and forget about going about day to day life. We are glad you managed to get down to the lake, it is such a beautiful spot and perfect way to end the day. One of the benefits to not staying in town. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in New Zealand and got to stay at more equally beautiful DOC campsites around the country. Kind Regards The Westland Tai Poutini National Park Team
