We stayed for two nights in a two bedroom cottage which proved to be a bit of a mixed bag. Will deal with the positives first. The cottages have a wonderful view of the glacier and are located just out of the village. There is plenty of space for car parking and wandering around. The owners breed minature horses which are delightful to visit. The cottages have ample room and are fairly well equiped. The owners were pleasant and friendly.

Now for the negatives. The beds although they looked inviting were dreadful. The master bedroom had a cheap matress and the single bed in the other room was nothing more than a matress on some sort of box. Our cottage had a cane lounge suite that had seen better days and although there were four of us there were only three seats. The other member of our party had to sit at the dining table or on the floor. the towels were shade of grey instead of being white and were anything but fluffy. If we had not prepaid over the internet I would have changed accomodation after the first night.

Glacier Cottages has potential to be a good place to stay but until the owners spend some money in upgrading the furniture and linen I'd give them a miss and stay in one of the motels in the village.

I'd read mixed reviews about these cottages, older towels and crockery etc, and they were right, the towels have seen better days but most of kitchen utensils were fine. The compendium said we would get fresh towels and garbage removed every day, which we didn't, but I'm sure if i asked it would not have been a problem. All the furniture was new and the linen was fine, trust me the position of these cabins and there view far outweights any issue like that. We spent 2 nights here in May, and could of spent a week here just relaxing. There are shetland ponies right outside your door for the kids, a river in front of you, and stunning mountain views, they are great little privtate cottages. You can't actually see the glacier but the view is till fantastic. I'd stay here again.

We stayed in a cottage over Easter, during the terrible storm, and were lucky enough to arrive on the day the power got restored, after there being no power for 4 days. We didn't actually interact with any staff during our whole stay (there was a note in the window of the reception when we arrived, telling us which room to go to and that power was expected to be restored that day) but that was fine. The views from the cottage were nice - looking out over a river, towards the mountains where the glacier is, although we couldn't actually see the glacier from our room. The room had a full kitchen, lounge seating & tv, a double bed in the alcove off the lounge and another double bed in a separate bedroom - so plenty of space to spread out. The bathroom had a decent shower but could benefit from an extractor fan being installed, as it got incredibly steamy. The room was cleany and tidy and suited our needs. The only two things I could fault it on was the distance from Franz Josef village (it was much further than we had expected, about a 6-7 minute drive) and the bed we slept on in the separate bedroom had terrible roll-together - perhaps the bed in the lounge would have been better.

Stayed in cottage 3 for 1 night. This is a great motel in a great location. Plenty of room for four people in the lounge room and the two seperate bedrooms - both bedrooms had queensize beds and one bedroom also had a single bed. The kitchen was a good size and well equiped. Everything was clean and tidy. Drinks on the little deck at sunset with views of the river, mountains and Franz Josef Glacier cannot be beaten. The wireless internet only works in the office.

The cottages are beautiful, well maintained, with absolutely outstanding views to the mountains/glaciers. I agree with other comments that some of the metal along the river bed is unpleasant but the views truly outweigh this a-plenty!

Additionally, we were in the unfortunate position of attempting to leave Franz Josef as TC Ita affected Northern Island and North/West of the South Island. If the cottages weren't welcoming enough, the owners also went out of their way to assist us with advice and access to local information and knowledge. Had it not been for their welcoming nature and kindness, we would have missed our flight home the following morning.

Yes, the cottages are gorgeous and the location lovely. But the hospitality and willingness to help demonstrated true dedication to travelers!

One of the worst properties we've stayed in. The owners don't seem very interested in maintaining their cottages and seem to focus on their other business/farming ventures. We were greeted with a note on the office door and wouldn't have seen the hosts if we didn't seek them out.
The cottage door lock could be opened without a key if you jiggled it enough, the crockery was very dirty and we felt uncomfortable using it. The bed was old/poor quality and with a very soft/springy feel and the shower head was awful (with a big dry void in the middle).
The view was spectacular (if you looked beyond the 3 old concrete trucks parked by the side of the river) but unfortunately the glacier has retreated so much that it can no longer bee seen from this area.

I had the pleasure of staying at these cottages a few nights ago. The cabins are spacious and the staff very friendly. As long as you have a car, it's a fantastic location with gorgeous views, only a short trip into town. Another added bonus is the DVD player having a functioning USB capability - a rarity in accomodations these days! Very cosy, thanks for having us :)

Our family of three stayed 2 nights in bedroom 2. I loved the fact the the cabins were all freestanding, making it feel like we were alone. The view of the glaciers from our room was spectacular. It was such a privilege to have this view while we were snugged up inside our room. The accommodation was clean and everything was in working order. The highlights for us was the tranquility of the setting, the warmth of the owners and best of all, being able to feed and pet the ponies. My 5 year old and I fell in love with a dark brown pony with a golden mane. Every opportunity we had was spent sitting next to the fence and stroking her head. She had the loveliest temperament. One morning we were lucky enough to feed hay to a mummy horse and her foal. The mum who was in a poor condition was rescued by the owner and nursed back to good health to have her foal. During our stay the owner dropped by a soft horse toy that had belonged to her daughter. It is now her new best friend!

Overall we have such warm memories of our stay at Glacier cottages. We would definitely recommend it especially to those with young children.

We stayed at cottage no 3. Two queen bed each in one bedroom with an additional bed making it comfortable for 5 ppl. Free DVD and WiFi which was weak and only reachable in the porch. Excellent farm with horse ranch around which the kids just adored. Friendly owners who shared some knowledge about horse keeping. Overall good value for money.

My family of four stayed in Cottage 2 during the April School holidays.
It was one of the cheapest places we stayed on our trip, so our expectations weren't too high. It was a pleasant surprise, therefore, to discover a cosy cottage in a lovely location.
Service was friendly and the cottage was clean. There were free DVDs on loan and the WIFI, while weak, was also free.
My young son loved this accommodation more than any other due to the miniature horses, swing set and location next to the river.
I loved sitting on the deck with a hot drink enjoying the peace and great views. It is a little bit out of town, but for me this added to the appeal.
The bathroom was nice with some lovely shampoo, and the small kitchen was reasonably well stocked.
The only downside was the beds, which could do with some new, more supportive, matresses. However, this would not stop me from staying here again.
