Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

With lack of available vacancies we booked one night here in spite of varying reviews. Wish we hadn't. The room was damp and mouldy, towels unclean and the kitchen was absolutely disgusting. Although everyone tried to keep the noise down the walls are so thin a tiny step sounded like a 300 pound man stomping by our door. Only positive thing was that the smelly bed was surprisingly comfortable. Would not stay here again.

I would give this place a negative score if it was possible. I stayed here for two nights with friends while travelling on a holiday.

Where to start? There are no signs showing where to go, you have to check in at a seemingly unrelated hotel nearby. Reception sent us to three different rooms before we got to the right one. When you do find the actual Climber's Rest building, the signage consists of a printout stuck to the front door. The same door which is perpetually unlocked and left wide open to the outside.

On the side of the doorway, someone had hocked a giant glob of bloody phlegm onto the wall at some point in the past, which has dried into a disgusting red mess.

The interior consisted of old stained-black carpets and a long hallway of dim lighting and dirty walls. The kitchen area contained simple cooking implements (microwave, kettle, etc) and an ancient, seemingly broken television on the wall. Everything smelt and felt damp, dirty, mouldy and old.

The room itself was just as disgusting. A hardwood floor (no carpet), beds on wheels, mouldy window drapes (seriously, they were stained with green patches), a broken light globe above one of the beds, random plumbing fixtures in the ceiling, mouldy and dirty shower / toilet... etc, etc. The room had no ventilation or air flow and felt damp and generally unhealthy.

The beds were not too uncomfortable, but there was little to no noise suppression between rooms, meaning you could hear people shuffling about and talking in adjacent rooms. This, combined with the poor air circulation, led to a terrible sleep.

I could go on forever, but I'll end this review here by strongly recommending you spend a bit extra for somewhere else to stay; your health and dignity is not worth the few dollars you might save by staying here. Avoid at all costs.

A very poor Motel, had trouble finding it . No signs on building, have to book in at a hotel near. In the back streets, behind the Info centre, you see all the staff coming out the back, having a fagg & chat . No security on the back door, any one can come in. Room very basic, can hear people next door or across the passage. Felt unsafe there. Not up to the standard of NZ motels. Cooking & lounge, small & basic, needs a good clean. Never again. The price was expensive, for what you got.
