First time staying at The Westhaven Motel. We usually stay down at one of the motels on Cook Flat Road but this time chose to stay in 'town'. Sadly not too many people around Fox Glacier township and a number of businesses have closed. Stayed 2 nights. Room was large. Self catered one night and ate out at the White Pub the next. Did both the classic Lake Matheson walk, and the longer and steeper Lake Gault walk on seperate days (starts off the main Lake Matheson walking track). We would stay again at The Westhaven Motel. Price had reduced than earlier advertised, was very reasonable being $100 pn
We stayed two nights here - warm, clean, comfortable beds, friendly service, toiletries included, good Wifi. There’s good parking and it’s a 2 minute walk to shops and restaurants. Would come back for sure.
Very nice, large and clean units. Good sized bathroom with a bath. Close to the road that takes you to Lake Matheson and Gillespie's Beach (a must see). Close to a few good pubs and restaurants. Wifi was very weak. We got a very good price of approx $80 a night, but it was just after lockdown was lifted and I think they were encouraging people to come. Some milk in the room would have been good. Overall a good choice for this area.
Staff were pleasant and helpful. Room was very clean, shower was good, beds comfortable. Perhaps another choice of pillow would have been helpful. WiFi was ok. Heater worked well at night. Good recommendation from the staff to go to Lake Matheson for dinner. That was excellent. It was a bit pricey for what you got, but it was ok.
Website advertises extras like wifi and breakfast. Wifi is so weak you have to stand at your door to use and it’s $13 for a continental breakfast. Not an overly clean motel either. I wiped my shelves clean myself. Accomodation is limited down here
This motel is overpriced for a very ordinary motel. It claims to be luxury but is, in fact, more or less standard. That said it was comfortable and well-run. It is centrally located and near restaurants and bars.
Overall the stay wasn’t luxurious or spacious (as it looked on the pics!) but it was comfortable and clean. Until on our last day, whilst it’s absolutely chucking it down all day, come 10am, electricity goes away and we’re left with nothing. Literally! No WiFi, no fridge, no microwave, no TV... we thankfully had hot water at least! Not a single apology (whether it’s at fault or not... you just apologize!), no compensation, even the simple fact of arranging breakfast for us at the nearby cafes would have been so nice... and information, people like to be informed when things aren’t going to plan! It just left that last sour taste in our mouth as everyone had been so accommodating and helpful until then!
Due to the severe weather conditions led to road closures from Christchurch to Fox Glacier, we tried all the way and still couldn't arrive to Fox Glacier and could not check in The Westhaven Motel. We requested for the refund but the motel just pulled all the responsibility on to the guest. What a shame on to this motel!
The central location is no special bonus as everything is central in Fox. The architect did not waste any time on the outward appearance of the motel, which lacks even the slightest touch of attractiveness and charm. The room itself was quite big with two big beds of good quality. One of the bedspreads had a fairly big dirty spot in the centre, which didn't improve our first impression. The view from our window was blocked by a high fence in about one metre 's distance. The bathroom was ok. Breakfast was already in the fridge and definitely basic. We had a good night' s sleep as it was absolutely quiet. My recommendation is not to spend more time here than you have to.
The motel is just on the corner just before the coming into the main street proper when coming in from Franz Joseph glacier. It is a short walk to the central area of Fox Glacier. Check in is across the fore court and separate from the rooms. There is two wings of units. There is plenty of parking in front of your room. The rooms were one of the nicest we stayed in. Very lush and well appointed. The bed was nice and comfortable and you get a good sleep. Our room was closest to the road on the top side of the units. It had a window that looked out over the road. It had a covering but it didn't block out the light. There was hardly any traffic noise at night. We were there in winter which is the off season. The WiFi was very bad, I know, first world problems and all, but when you are trying to contact family in a different country, it made it nigh on impossible. Other than that, it was very clean, well appointed, comfortable and the pricing was excellent. Well worth staying at.…
