We stayed here because the weather turned bad and a tent wasn’t going to be very fun. Booked a double room with shared bathroom for 2 nights. Beds were ok but the room was damp. Mould on the walls. This is a hostel so we planned to cook our meals. The kitchen is in pretty bad shape. There were 4 stove tops with 2-4 burners. Only 1 burner worked accurately in the kitchen. Tea towels were supplied but there were only 4 a day and they got pretty grotty. Not enough cutlery. I went to the attached restaurant to get forks for dinner and they would only give me 1 fork. They said the morning manager was in charge of that. The booking said there was soup and popcorn included. When we asked about the soup we were told that was between 6&6:30. Never saw popcorn. Ad shows hot pool and when we searched it out we found an empty spa in a shed area. We asked about using the bbq & management told us we would have to clean it before we could use it. “It’s pretty dirty. “. I recommend spending an extra few $ for something clean. (Or sleep in the tent!)There is purely no pride in this establishment. They take the money and leave you to it.

Private room with ensuite was small but comfortable with a heater, tv, electric blankets and mini fridge. We were moved to a room which had just been refurbished (after complaining about a bad smell & broken lights in our original room)

In general the whole place has a dirty grungy feel to it. The kitchen is YUCK bordering on unsanitary. Lights in kitchen were broken. Common areas are dark, musty, old & unpleasant to be in. Whole place is In desperate need of a renovation. I’m surprised to see this kind of standard in NZ as this is something I’d expect in SE Asia.

My friend and I stayed in the backpackers part of the Bigfoot bar and restaurant. We stayed in a 4 person bunk room.
The whole place was quite dirty with there being stuff all on the tables and in the bathrooms. Half of the doors in the female bathrooms didn’t close.
The wifi in this place was HORRIBLE, as we were both from another country we were very reliant on the free wifi at the places we stayed at. The wifi constantly kept dropping out and you couldn’t watch/look at any videos as it just wouldn’t load properly.
The spa also was going through “maintenance” but looked like it hadn’t been touched for a while. And looked like a sign they constantly have up. Which was one of the things we were looking forward to after a 4 hour drive.
Then my friend and I went and had pizza at the restaurant downstairs as there wasn’t many dinner options around and it was quite a miserable night weather wise. We had to share a pizza because apparently $30 pizza that had next to no toppings and mostly just cheese is acceptable.
Wouldn’t really recommend this place to anyone, should have stayed near Franz Joseph as we found out later that is where most of the activities are.

Bad service...it took us ten minutes to get a couple of pints in the bar.
Wish we had not bothered...the worst beers we had in 4 weeks in NZ.
Pretty pricey too.
Nice outside space but thats all its got going for it.

couldn't sleep all night due to how hot it was in the bedrooms, for some reason the heating was on and everybody was absolutely sweltering? then the next morning i woke up to find myself covered in bed bugs and blood all over my sheets from the amount of bugs i slept on, absolutely disgusting! we reported it to staff who just denied the bed bugs even though you could see the bugs on the sheets and there was clearly blood all over the sheets from bugs, they said they called experts in and the experts said they weren't bed bugs but we'd seen them and we knew for sure what they were.. we are now all covered head to toe in bites! not a nice experience at all.

We knew it's a backpacker place, but as the other places in Fox and Franz Josef were fully booked, we booked for a double at €160 per night. Soon we discovered why it was the only place with a room...
The double room consisted in a bed and a chair. That's it! Not even a table lamp exist. The matress was old (swinging like a water bed) and uncomfortable. The cleaness of the room (should I use this word?...) was terrible. We had to pull out the bed from the wall (that both could go out from the bed) and the carpet uncovered never had seen a vacuum cleaner on the last months... Wi-fi was poor
We stayed 2 nights and the room was never clean up.
Reception is only open until 6pm. After you will have to make the check in at the bar counter.

It was the worse place that stayed on my trip to New Zealand. WI-FI didn't work, breakfast wasn't ready on the time (and it was just bread and cereal). The shower wetted the entire bathroom. Well, at least location was good..

My husband, his mother and I stayed in Room 27 on 29 December.

We were not happy with the condition of the room at all, and asked to be changed. There was mould on the shower walls, no wifi, unfinished plastering in the room, cracks and mess on walls, rust in the toilet paper holder and pipes lying around outside.

We hadn't mentioned that we could clearly hear people in the room above us, there was no hand soap in the bathroom and only two towels, though there were three of us.

Upon asking to be moved, we were told this wasn't possible, and a staff member was sent with us to clean the shower mould. They were very apologetic when they saw the state of the room and we reiterated that we would rather move than have the strong smell of mould remover in that tiny room with us. Again, we were told this was not possible.

I understand that rates were higher because of the time of year, but as New Zealanders who regularly stay in paid accommodation around the country, we were shocked and disgusted at the abysmal state of the room, especially considering that we paid about $240 for it. For that price, one is entitled to expect the basics to be present. The next night, for example, we stayed in a very tidy, well presented room in a popular tourist area with limited accommodation for a lower price. There was no comparison.

We found the manager to be abrupt and uncaring that the room was in such a bad state. Reading online reviews, we see that this seems to be a common story. We also met two other couples in the same night who were upset with their accommodation at your facility.

We believe there should be more accountability for the state of this poor accommodation at such inflated prices. As New Zealanders, we are embarrassed that visitors are experiencing this in our country.

We stayed two nights at Fox Pod Hostel. the room smelled toral musty, it was wet in the room, the bedsheets had bloodstains. the wifi did not work. the walls are extremely thin so it’s totally noisy. the communal kitchen is a disaster. the dining tables were sticky. on the tables stick black long hairs. Not again!

Had to stay here last minute as severe weather prevented us from traveling to our intended destination. Room was average however there was a used condom wrapper in the bedside locker, and a live insect in the bed. After checking the sheets for more bugs, we found 2 hairs. Facilities were average from what we saw however would not recommend from a cleanliness point of view
