Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Every inch of the hotel is fascinating. My room was very clean and comfortable. Lester, the owner, cooked me a delicious meal and entertained me with tales. The wifi was strong and the massage chair in the lounge upstairs is worth a night's stay alone. Listening to the occasional train pass by in the distance while enjoying the antique furniture and decor transported me back in time. A unique and memorable experience.

If you are travelling from Christchurch to the Coast don’t stop at Arthur’s Pass for your coffee ( like everyone else does) go the extra distance and stop here. The coffee we had was excellent and the freshly made muffins were superb. But more impressive is what you can see here while you wait...and you may linger longer. Outside is an amazing display of old machinery, cars, drays and intriguing models while inside is a simply amazing collection of “stuff”. There is just too much to list other than to say that you will be intrigued by the quirkiness and amazed at the range of the gear and literature and history that is on display. It is well worth the stop to see something so very different but appealing.

We saw this place on our way from Christchurch through to Franz Joseph- looked cool with all of the lord of the rings stuff right?!
Stopped on the way back through for a bite- went inside was abit shook by all the stuff inside. Menu was basically fried foods etc - I ordered the loaded wedges and my partner didn’t get to order anything as the lady walked away and did not return to take his order? We thought it was funny and would share so whatever.
Wedges turned up and the cheese was like not even melted like still in grated form, the bacon was like next to raw & finally some of the chips were cold. I felt bad leaving over half but like ?????
Was super awkward too this local lady I assume was talking about getting her dogs nuts chopped off and hanging them around her dogs neck to anyone that would listen. That plus the crazy niknaks we hightailed it’s outta there as it felt like it was about to turn into a horror movie 😂

Wouldn’t return.

We had 6 couples booked for 2 nights and a weekend of playing music. We were the last to arrive of our group and even though our booking was made 6 months earlier and confirmed a week before arrival, we were told that he was over booked for the Saturday night and he would have to move us. On questioning on which room we were going to, he said he didn't know yet. He murmured about being in his room and he would sleep in a covered wagon outside. I counted 6 long black hairs in our shower (ensuite bathroom so not shared) and 1 pulled out of a once white but now grey towel. The loo was grubby too. I dont think the bathroom had been cleaned at all between guests. We decided to leave and drove through to Greymouth where we got a great room at the Colerane Motel. Quirky place to stop but stay there at your own risk.

Amazing place. Fiona and Lester were amazing hosts. Friendly and hospitable. The hotel has been thoughtfully and extensively decorated with period and quirky pieces to enhance a bygone era. This is one of NZ's best kept secrets and we loved our stay there. Comfortable clean warm bedrooms. Nothing is a problem. We will be staying again. If you are travelling from Christchurch to the West Coast, this is a perfect place to stop. This hotel is one of the few left in NZ that reflects our Kiwiana heritage and culture. Couldn't fault it. Thanks again guys, you rock

Disclaimer: I didn't actually stay in the hotel, so cannot comment on the rooms or the service; but the building! Just full of ephemera/junk/antiques (choose your own noun). From the large model of Gollum on the roof, the old cars and farm machinery (and penny-farthing bicycles) outside, to the stuffed animals, old posters, mannequins (including a monk), jukebox, paintings, mirrors...and a laconic owner who encourages the curious to look around and tells you about his last visit to the UK when he went to Birmingham to buy a hearse!
It just overloads the senses!

My family enjoyed our stay here. We had the four poster room with bunk beds and ensuite, all of which was clean and comfortable. I slept very well and had a lovely shower in the morning, what more can you ask for? The victorian/edwardian furntiure and fittings made for a unique experience and I enjoyed explaining to my children what all the old antiques displayed around the premises were used for. Lester was a friendly and obliging host, he even posted my son's forgotten headphone cable back to us with no charge. I would definitely recommend a stay here if you are open to something a little different from your average bland motel.

Firstly, we both slept very well!

Secondly, this was nothing like every other place we've stayed.

This experience had us realizing how sterile our hotel visits have been, everywhere is starting to look and feel the same.

This place though, had history and something photo and attention worthy at every turn... No every slight shift of the eye and you'd spot something new. I'm referring to the cafe, the bar, the museum areas and even the rooms upstairs by the way!

The owner Lester is your classic hardworking, honest and knowledgeable Kiwi bloke who knows a lot of the area and genuinely tries to delight his guests.

Last night he stayed back with us and some other guests to explain the contraptions and history of the area. This man is an absolute gem and needs to be protected 😂

I can't recommend it enough, whether you're passing through or trekking in the area, this is a wonderful experience you won't find elsewhere.

We stopped for a coffee and stayed for nearly an hour.
The coffee was the best we had on our 4 day trip and the scones were just freshly made and were still warm.
The owner was friendly and then we were fascinated by all the historic photos and historic items in the hotel. It is like a museum.
