Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Kiwi Wild Lodge was an excellent find, a real home from home. Comfortable rooms and lovely food in a beautiful setting. Trevor and Gail were excellent hosts. One of the best places we stayed in New Zealand. Thank you.

This was a highlight of our 3 week tour of New Zealand. Such gracious hosts - we were made to feel at home. The kids loved the garden and we all loved our room. We stayed on Christmas Eve and even had breakfast on Christmas morning. As we left, we were given a goody bag filled with wine, christmas cake, chocs etc - such wonderful hosts. We were not rushed out and even got to meet their family. The kids loved the rope swing and kayaking on the lake.

Stayed one night - very comfortable and exceptionally clean. Lovely breakfast provided. However, as others have said, best thing was our lovely hosts who were happy to chat and it was great to hear all about the kiwi project nearby. Sadly we only had one night but hope to return for a longer stay in a superb location with gorgeous grounds.

Kiwi Wild Lodge is comfortable accommodation with great hosts. Gail and Trevor really do make your stay special, their Kiwi hospitality is very warm and friendly and they go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. Clean and comfortable lodgings, a lovely continental breakfast before you set out, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the ambience and the surroundings. They can tell you so much about kiwi conservation and the work which is helping to conserve and sustain them in this area. Very interesting indeed. An out of the way place that is close to Greymouth...just perfect for us.

We had two nights here with Trevor and Gail, who were most welcoming and extended wonderful hospitality. The garden is beautiful. We especially enjoyed a trip out at night with Trevor listening to the Wekas and the Moreporks. It was very kind of Trevor to give his time in this way, we really appreciated the experience of being out among the wildlife.

This place is definitely the best place we staid during our trip through New Zealand. What a surprise ! One of the best hidden secrets in this part of NZ. Even the name is secret ... since they have changed their name into Kiwi Wild Lodge !! The owners are Travis and Gail who are lovely couple - their hospitality is amazing !

Everything about this place is wonderful, the house, the views, the gardens, the food, but especially our hosts Trevor and Gail. We knew we had chosen the perfect place to stay when we drove down the drive to the house and our hostess Gail came out to greet us with a wide smile. The West Coast is undeniably beautiful, and there are undeniably many beautiful places in the world, however it is the people that make a stay remarkable and unforgettable. Trevor and Gail’s local knowledge is unbeatable. After a scrumptious home cooked evening meal - a chat around the dinner table at night with great ideas for activities and weather forecasts for the following day. We are not golfers and yet there are so many other things to do and places to visit and explore. A lunch at The Blackball Hilton is a must or even just a relaxing day with one of Gail’s fabulous lunches in the garden overlooking the pond is a treat. The house has a much loved feel with lovely bright clean bathrooms, loads of hot water and superbly fluffy towels. The all round deck ensures there is always a great spot to sit and relax in the wonderful tranquil surroundings. We loved our stay and we feel as though we have gained more than just new favourite place to stay, more than just new friends, it’s more like family!

I've been to NZ 6 times since 1999, and have been to the West Coast/Westland each time. My wife and I go to flyfish and enjoy the spectacular landscape, pubs, wineries and friendly hospitality. It's the Garden of Eden. In the past, we've always stayed at high end luxury fishing lodges and other fine establishments, which are tremendous but also in the neighborhood of $500-$600US per night. I would say it's always been worth it, but with the heightened exposure NZ has received in recent years, the influx of tourism causing loss of certain "charms", and global financial meltdown, decided to look at an alternative since I was traveling with an old college teammate this time who had never been to NZ. We spent 3 nights at Caledonian Creek Lodge based on the recommendation of a fishing guide we've used over the years, a great guy who is a West Coast native. Unsure what exactly to expect, I landed in Christchurch and drove directly over the Alps (3 hours) with more than a little trepidation. However upon pulling into the driveway already began to feel good about trusting the rec from our fishing guide. The lodge sits on large acreage, and includes a 9 hole golf course that Trevor the owner manages and maintains. It's modest, but lovely. The property also includes indigenous forest, wildlife, a pond, beautiful landscaping - and Trevor and his wife Gail are in the process of finishing a Kiwi (bird) reserve on the property. Trevor works for the NZ equivalent of our Dept of Wildlife and Conservation and Gail (also from the area) works with NZ government. The lodge itself is spacious, clean and attractive with oustanding, private/quiet rooms with baths; wrap around deck for wine/beer/nibbles; and Trevor and his lovely wife also cook breakfast. While we were there they also provided lunch to take out on the river, and delicious dinner with wine. They're just super people with good hearts and deep local/regional knowledge of things to do in the region, including Greymouth. After leaving Caledonian Creek, we ended up staying at luxury fishing lodges as in the past, and actually wished we had just stayed with Trevor and Gail (and for less than half the price of those place too!). Moving forward Caledonian Creek will definitely be the place for me in Westland assuming their down-home formula doesn't change - which I cannot imagine. If you're looking for a fishing guide, I suggest Russell Hansen who can be reached at www.icfish.co.nz (or via Trevor). He's likeable, humble and has superb sighting skills for the advanced fisherman - along with great patience for beginners. He taught my wife and always puts us on large fish in beautiful surroundings.
