The town seems to exists mainly to provide a stopping point for those travelling from the south of South Island back to Christchurch, especially large coach parties. The hotel serves that purpose very well with large, well equipped rooms, some with a view from the balcony of the mountains (and fuel station). There is not a lot in the town but the hotel fills that gap by providing the option of a good value buffet for the evening meal. Perhaps not the place for a holiday but the hotel is very suitable as an overnight stop on a long journey.

Had 2 families in for dinner, the front of house staff were fantastic.
On completion of our mains at 7.55pm we were told that the kitchen was closing at 8pm and we were asked if we wanted desserts.
3 adults confirmed yes...but unfortunately the lovely FOH lady told us that the chef had closed the kitchen.
Being in hospitality for almost 30 years myself (as a Chef) this was flabbergasting to hear.
8pm in peak season is very early to close a kitchen.
How long to knock up 3 desserts and gain $30+ easy dollars up sell...shame on you kitchen staff.
If I was the owner I would be asking questions.

Property is large and just off the main road close to a fuel station with ample free car parking. The room given to us was a triple bed occupancy and was a really big spacious and clean room, although very dated and slightly musty . It maybe a considered a little expensive considering the location and quality.Lighting in the room was poor and one could not draw the curtains back as privacy was affected. The beds were too high narrow and not comfortable. It looks like the room has been recently renovated but then who has designed a small bathroom where the toilet paper holder is literally at your face level when sitting on the toiletseat or that no dustbin is kept in the bathroom.
One of the reception girls was not at all obliging, refusing to give us an additional room heater to warm the freezing big room (which the inbuilt one was ineffective in doing). She asked us to personally come down to collect extra towels for the third person which ideally should have been provided without us even asking considering we had paid for triple occupancy. She wasn't willing to give extra sugar satchets etc saying one should got o the restaurant oneslef and pick it up. Overall the service was bad .Basically don't expect any kind of room service as she would say I am all alone so please come down and take it.
The breakfast buffet was decent though.
Be aware this hotel is patronised by conducted tour and big group bookings so breakfast time it can get crowded.-

We booked a couple of weeks in advance as a stopover for the Alps 2 Ocean bike ride.

We asked to have a room at the back (were told they would see what they could do) and booked to have dinner in the restaurant (that was ok and they’d sort out something vegan for us)

Now I get that a lot of the larger motels are struggling post covid.....

When we arrived, despite the rear being completely empty, we couldn’t have a room there. Instead we had to be at the front.

Despite being enticed by a restaurant and bar (we’d cycled 80km), it was shut and no one told us either in advance or on check in.

At 3am (not the hotels fault), someone started unloading vehicles from a trailer right in front of the hotel for the best part of an hour which complemented the passing night trucks which ran, through the night.

In short, despite it obviously being unknown times for staff, nothing is done for the benefit of the guest, everything it seems done for the benefit of the owners.

We arrived sharp at the advertised check in time so that we could enjoy our short time resting in Omara. Our room was not ready but the one offered us (A family room) was spacious and well cared for. There were several large groups staying at the same time as us. They filled the restaurant at dinner time and we decided to eat from the a la carte menu in the small bar area, away from the crowd. Mistake. We discovered, when our order could not be fulfilled, that the a la carte menu simply comprised items from the main buffet (left-overs in our case). I guess our expectations were not met. Members of staff were understanding of our criticisms. Although the hotel offers a reasonable standard of accommodation and hospitality, we did not feel it was the best choice for us, as single travellers.

We had a very large room, sadly without any a/c, but it did cool down to sensible levels by bed time. Checking in was very easy and we were in our room in no time. The place was full of people on coach tours so when we went to the restaurant it was absolutely rammed but luckily the waitress said we could just eat in the bar, or outside, where it was very quiet.

My wife ordered lamb shank and I order chicken salad. The food we had was very good and good value but as the portions were massive I felt really bad that I could only manage about half of mine - I’m just a small eater. Anyway it was good.

A convenient place to stay.

We were travelling with a group and stayed there for just one night before crossing to North Island the following day.Unfortunately it was pouring with rain so we were hardly able to leave the hotel which was a pity as it is an attractive little town.
The food was very good and the wine was reasonably priced which was a big bonus for us as we really like the NZ wine.
The room was perfectly adequate for our short stay.

We did not stay in the hotel but we ate there twice in the restaurant in the evening. There is a standard pub menu but they also offer a buffet, presumably as they appear to take in large coach tours. Both nights that we were there, we had to sit in the bar space because there was no room in the restaurant due to a group going through. The seating was all a bit disorganised, The buffet was pretty unremarkable - tasty enough but nothing to write home about. We found the service rather hit and miss - the lady managing the buffet was really unhelpful and looked like she wished she was somewhere else. And considering it was peak season we were a bit surprised that they closed the buffet so early. Clearly the bus tours were their priority. After the second meal there we chose to eat elsewhere.

Check in was very quick and efficient. We had 2 motorbikes and the lovely lady on reception was very accommodating and suggested we park undercover by the reception door (which saved a frosty seat the next morning). She also gave us the wifi code and I must say the wifi was awesome!!!
Our room had 2 beds, queen and single. It was quite dated and was pretty cold, especially after a day on the bike. We cranked up the heat and it warmed up nicely (albeit slowly). We did have the heater in the room as well as the bathroom heater on well into the night.
The bed was a bit roll together but cosy warm and was nice and clean.
The bathroom was nice, again, dated, but clean.
The room was quiet throughout the night and we had good sleep.
I would definitely stay again as it was good value for money.

What a lovely Place to stay. my husband and i enjoyed our stay at the heritage gateway only thing that was a concern were the cats meowing most of the night outside our room door and would walk backwards and forwards constantly, when my husband and i were trying sleep after a rather long day of travelling . i thought it was a little strange that there were cats at the hotel, but apart from that it was a lovely stay, the rooms were beautiful and very clean and tidy, the food was lovely as well and was very peaceful apart form the meowing cats. on arrival the receptionist Tracey was very lovely and polite and very accommodating we would definitely highly recommend this place to our friends and family

Sorry, we didn't do this - however, we were on a bus tour and the bus would have taken us. Maybe enquire at the hotel.
