Dunstan Downs is a working sheep farm, in the high country of the South Island. You can stay in our home and have breakfast or you can stay in our backpacker hostel and cook for yourselves. We also have a rebuilt wagon near the river, a cosy holiday hideaway- self contained. We are 17 km from the nearest shops. Plenty of wide open spaces and fresh air.

Geeva the host was absolutely lovely, but Orbitz did not give a complete description of the property. The place I booked didn't even have electricity. Geeva kindly offered me a queen room in it's place, but when I realized there was no fan and no flushing toilets (just a stinky outhouse) I quickly realized this was not for me. I fully expected to see sheep here and never saw one.

We knew this one night stay would be an experience, and it was, just not quite the one we anticipated. Our booking read (& I quote) ‘twin room with a view’ & the long list of inclusions read a river view, a bath, a private entrance, a kitchenette blah, blah The reality turned out to be a tiny weeny 2 bed room off the kitchen barely big enough for the 2 single beds & 2 🧳 & us It was called the cooks room & I kind of wish I’d been the station cook as then it would have been very appropriate Because the large kitchen had everything you could need to make a big country meal, Unfortunately for us, who were trying to sleep, it was the hub of the place. Breakfast at 5am for some was not ideal for us The bathroom, in a building beside the kitchen was also not ideal for a private shower experience , but then I can also see the attraction of having a washing machine for everyone’s use in this room However at the end of the day we met some very interesting people, who had interesting stories, and we did receive our experience albeit not the one we thought We did see the roadway into the ‘room with a view’ (but not the room itself) as we noted some other people who had, 🤷‍♀️who knows, made a better offer than us, drive in there for the night It was on the other side of the road Our price sounded too good to be true, although on enquiring with a fellow resident, he was paying a third less than us for a bigger room with a double bed I think we perhaps got whatever room was left on that particular day I noted also that Booking.com accepted our booking but don’t send out the usual review request after you stay All up, had we stayed on the other side we would not have met the bunch of diversely different folk we did meet Big Hi to James, you’re a legend

So lucky our accomodation in Omaramara was double booked and we ended up here. If you're looking for 4 star plus don't bother. This place is working sheep station, NOT a motel. It's rustic, comfortable and provides everything needed from free wifi, towels, cooking facilities & utensils and, a free laundry. Tim & Geva are great hosts & so relaxed. A gem of a find and great for astrophotography. A++++

Stayed with family. The owners were very rude. Couldn’t use Kitchen properly. Owners were scolding my wife and kids for using the kitchen and lounge. Won’t visit again and don’t recommend for others too.

Reads well on booking websites however it is slightly different. Once you pull into the drive off the main road you see a number of cabins/demountables. You drive up the property to the main house. This is where the owners live. This is where you see a handful of sheep. We grabbed our keys and heading back down to the cabins. They are located approx 50mtr from the main road. The main kitchen is a great set up providing everything you need to cook. Toilets are good and plenty of towels. We booked last minute as we needed a stop with our young one. Booked a 'small twin room' found out that this was a room off the main kitchen so people were eating right outside the room. This was okay as people aren't hanging in common space late. Just a heads up for anyone who stumbles across a very cheap room here, good chance you're in the kitchen building (cooks room). It was a great experience however and an opportunity to meet travellers. Not the sheep station you expect but a great place to stop over for one night on the way through.

Tim and Geva are the perfect hosts, and the sheep station setting is beyond amazing. It was one of the highlights of our NZ trip. Gorgeous scenery, great hospitality, lots to learn about mustering heritage.

We were very disappointed by this.We expected a lovely farm experience that was remote and had a farm feeling. The room was tiny which didn't bother us but the old wire woven beds and creaky beds did worry us. There was a heater but it wasn't enough to keep us warm and there was not extra blankets, we slept in jumpers, and extra pants, hats, 2 pairs socks etc. We were very close to the road so from 3am the trucks woke us up every 30 minutes, not relaxing at all. We would never recommend this except as a transit stop. Wifi not ultrafast or even fast. So disappointing as we had expected more based on the website.

This place was in a lovely though isolated location, with nice views, a very comfortable room and a delicious breakfast. A little difficult to find the turn-off. Decent Wifi on offer. Don't forget to see the feeding of the sheep...

We travel lots. NZ 66 Dollars for the room we had and the welcome, i would advise anyone to simply pass on this stop and go to the city close by. Check out is supposed to be at 10AM and i heard the owner telling some young customers "you are staying one night, it s 10.15AM, it closes at 10AM, cant you read?" When you take 66 dollars a night from customers, I believe being courteous the next day is a minimum. Pass this place. I understand it may be annoying to have people leaving late, in this case make your rules 930am and they will leave at 10am. In any case, being treated rudely like children is definitely not on! and not worth the money.
